Coastal vulnerability to extreme weather events: An integrated analysis of erosion, sediment movement, and land subsidence based on multi-temporal optical and SAR satellite data.

Coastal areas undergo continuous transformations, altering their geometry under the influence of external forces like tides, waves, and extreme events. Thus, monitoring the impact of extreme weather events on coastal regions is crucial to prevent potential cascading hazards. Here, we utilized time-series optical and SAR satellite data and tide records, coupled with sophisticated analytical techniques, to analyze erosion processes, sediment transport, and vertical land movement (VLM) at an embayed sandy beach (i.e., Haeundae Beach, South Korea). We found a significant erosion rate of -4.12 m/ye

Temporal changes in the content of labile and stabile mercury forms in soil and their inflow to the southern Baltic Sea.

Rivers represent the main source of mercury (Hg) in the Southern Baltic. Nevertheless, the concentration and proportion of individual Hg forms in rivers depend on the management of the river basin, as well as on the intensity of meteorological phenomena. Hence the aim of the present study was to determine the influence of drought and rains/intense rains on the content of labile and stable Hg forms in the soil of river catchments with various types of land management, and on the inflow of bioavailable mercury to the coastal zone of the sea. Soil and sediment samples were taken from two rivers f

Predicting the long-term (137)Cs distribution in Fukushima after the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident: a parameter sensitivity analysis.

Radioactive materials deposited on the land surface of Fukushima Prefecture from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant explosion is a crucial issue for a number of reasons, including external and internal radiation exposure and impacts on agricultural environments and aquatic biota. Predicting the future distribution of radioactive materials and their fates is therefore indispensable for evaluation and comparison of the effectiveness of remediation options regarding human health and the environment. Cesium-137, the main radionuclide to be focused on, is well known to adsorb to clay-rich s

The dual role of Biochar synergistic microbially induced carbon fixation: carbon dioxide fixation and soil structure improvement.

The continuous rise in greenhouse gas concentrations poses an irreversible threat to the earth system, while soil depletion and degradation are gradually eroding the basis of human survival. Therefore, the development of efficient technologies that combine carbon reduction and soil improvement is imperative. Although various carbon fixation and soil remediation methods have emerged in recent years, most of them have limitations such as single effects, complex operations, and high costs. This study proposed and validated a composite system based on biochar synergistic microbially induced carbon

Soil microbiome perturbation impedes growth of Bouteloua curtipendula and increases relative abundance of soil microbial pathogens.

Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama) is a valuable prairie grass for livestock forage, supporting food webs of herbivorous insects, reducing soil erosion, and limiting weed infiltration in urban grasslands. Efficient establishment of B. curtipendula in prairie restorations and urban plantings could drastically improve long-term functionality of the space. Soil microbial communities have been linked to plant germination, growth, and drought tolerance in many plant species, however little is known about the factors contributing to B. curtipendula germination and early growth. In this study, w

Remediation of mine polluted soil with nano-enhanced materials: Development of extreme learning machine approaches.

Successful mining soil reclamation promotes ecosystem recovery, reduces negative environmental effects, adds more area for forestry or agricultural purposes, and increases carbon (C) sequestration. In order to increase soil erosion management, improve soil quality, reduce pollutants, and assure safe land application of traditional amendment materials, nanoparticles with exceptionally high deliverability and reactivity may be used as amendments. Iron oxide is being researched for the remediation of industrial soil that is co-contaminated with arsenic (AS) due to the absence of Nano enhanced mat

Restoration of soils contaminated with PAHs by the mixture of zeolite composites mixed with exogenous organic matter and mineral salts.

The major cause of soil degradation (contamination, erosion, compaction) is closely linked to agriculture, i.e., unsustainable agriculture practices, which are reflected in the depletion of the soil organic carbon pool, loss in soil biodiversity, and reduction of C sink capacity in soils. Therefore, the agricultural practice of applying carbon-rich materials into the soil is an attractive solution for climate change mitigation and soil ecosystem sustainability. The paper aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the addition of organic-mineral mixtures to the mineral salts (NPK), including the ex

Synergistic effect of modified konjac glucomannan and biological enzyme induced carbonate precipitation on the biocementation of soil fugitive dust.

Soil fugitive dust poses a serious threat to human health, the plant-derived polysaccharide konjac glucomannan was modified to obtain konjac glucomannan-acrylic acid graft copolymer (KGMP), which was combined with enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) to control it. The performance of KGMP-EICP was evaluated. Microstructure characterization was performed on the treated soil fugitive dust samples, and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate how KGMP regulates the nucleation of calcium carbonate, thereby elucidating the fugitive dust control principle of KGMP-EICP. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal interactions bridge the support of root-associated microbiota for slope multifunctionality in an erosion-prone ecosystem.

The role of diverse soil microbiota in restoring erosion-induced degraded lands is well recognized. Yet, the facilitative interactions among symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, rhizobia, and heterotrophic bacteria, which underpin multiple functions in eroded ecosystems, remain unclear. Here, we utilized quantitative microbiota profiling and ecological network analyses to explore the interplay between the diversity and biotic associations of root-associated microbiota and multifunctionality across an eroded slope of a Robinia pseudoacacia plantation on the Loess Plateau. We found expli

Benchmarking the Humidity-Dependent Mechanical Response of (Nano)fibrillated Cellulose and Dissolved Polysaccharides as Sustainable Sand Amendments.

Soil quality is one of the main limiting factor in the development of the food sector in arid areas, mainly due to its poor mechanics and lack of water retention. Soil's organic carbon is nearly absent in arid soils, though it is important for water and nutrient transport, to soil mechanics, to prevent erosion, and as a long-term carbon sink. In this study, we evaluate the potential benefits that are brought to inert sand by the incorporation of a range of, mainly, cellulosic networks in their polymeric or structured (fiber) forms, analogously to those found in healthy soils. We explore the im

Bioturbation.

Bioturbation is an umbrella term for the biological reworking of soils and sediments by all kinds of organisms. It includes not only the impact of animals, but also that of rooting plants and trees. Although Charles Darwin's last scientific book On the Formation of Vegetable Mounds through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits (1881) already reported pioneering observations on the role of earthworms in particle displacement, soil formation and erosion-sedimentation processes, the term bioturbation was only introduced 70 years later to describe fossil biogenic structures in sedi

Enhanced Water Resistance of TiO2-GO-SMS-Modified Soil Composite for Use as a Repair Material in Earthen Sites.

Most earthen sites are located in open environments eroded by wind and rain, resulting in spalling and cracking caused by shrinkage due to constant water absorption and loss. Together, these issues seriously affect the stability of such sites. Gypsum-lime-modified soil offers relatively strong mechanical properties but poor water resistance. If such soil becomes damp or immersed in water, its strength is significantly reduced, making it unviable for use as a material in the preparation of earthen sites. In this study, we achieved the composite addition of a certain amount of sodium methyl sili

Human Q fever incidence is associated to spatiotemporal environmental conditions.

Airborne pathogenic transmission from sources to humans is characterised by atmospheric dispersion and influence of environmental conditions on deposition and reaerosolisation. We applied a One Health approach using human, veterinary and environmental data regarding the 2009 epidemic in The Netherlands, and investigated whether observed human Q fever incidence rates were correlated to environmental risk factors. We identified 158 putative sources (dairy goat and sheep farms) and included 2339 human cases. We performed a high-resolution (1 × 1 km) zero-inflated regression analysis to predict in

Methyl and Total Mercury in Different Media and Associated Fluxes in a Watershed Forest, Southwest China.

Mercury (Hg) deposition in the forest ecosystem is a significant source of input for methyl Hg (MeHg) and total Hg (THg) to the subtropical forest field and downstream aquatic systems. Wet deposition, litterfall, runoff, and fluxes with forest soil percolate of MeHg and THg were sampled for two years in a watershed forest of southwest China. Results showed that the depositions of THg and MeHg through litterfall and throughfall were 86 µg m-2 yr-1 and 0.8 µg m-2 yr-1 respectively, with litterfall acting as a predominant route for the input of both THg and MeHg. The estimated fluxes of THg and M

Anthropogenic influences on coastal environmental changes in the Mekong Delta: a study from Ben Tre Province, Southern Vietnam.

Low-lying coastal environments are highly dynamic and sensitive to natural as well as anthropogenic perturbations. Climate change, sea level rise, storms and tsunamis are the natural phenomena that affect the deltaic coasts in Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular. The effects of these phenomena can be exacerbated by human activities such as mangrove deforestation, aquaculture and infrastructure development. Conversely, the low-lying coastal areas are important in the economic development of Southeast Asian countries. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, coastal areas have been affect

Unveiling Multi-Hazard Hotspots in Kabul: An Integrated Geospatial Assessment in a Data-Scarce Urban Environment.

Multi-hazard assessment plays a crucial role in understanding the spatial concurrence and cumulative effects of various environmental hazards. However, limited availability of integrated hazard information and the lack of spatially explicit multi-hazard assessments constrain urban risk governance and landscape-scale nature-based solution planning. This study addresses this gap by enhancing scientific understanding of the spatial distribution of multiple environmental hazards in Kabul region, where data limitations and informal growth hinder effective risk management. The study pursues two obje

Pollution and toxicity of heavy metals in wildfires-affected soil and surface water: A review and meta-analysis.

Wildfires, both natural and man-made, release and mobilize hazardous substances such as heavy metal(loids) (HM), which are known carcinogens. Following intense rainfall events, HM bound to soil organic matter are transported from the soil to surface water, resulting in water quality degradation. This study reviews the pollution status of HM in wildfire-affected soil and surface water, as well as their toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. The rate of HM release during wildfires depends on factors such as the type of tree burned and fire severity. The mobility of HM from soil to surfac

Soil aggregate stability and its influencing factors in Picea Schrenkiana var. Tianschanica forests of the Central Tianshan Mountains.

Soil aggregate stability (SAS) is a key indicator of soil structural quality that underpins erosion resistance, water regulation, nutrient retention, and ecosystem functioning. We examined how topography and forest stand structure were associated with soil aggregate-size distribution and stability in Picea schrenkiana var. tianschanica forests in the central Tianshan Mountains, China. Water-stable aggregates and soil physicochemical properties were measured in 188 plots at two soil depths (0-20 and 20-60 cm). Linear mixed-effects models (MEMs), redundancy analysis (RDA), and structural equatio
