Cadmium pollution alters the priming effect of biochar application on soil organic carbon mineralization.

Biochar has high potential to reduce cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in polluted soils. While effective in Cd remediation, biochar amendment can stimulate native soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization via the priming effect, resulting in soil C release. However, it remains unclear whether Cd pollution alters the impact of biochar application on SOC mineralization, and how microbes modulate biochar-induced priming effect in Cd-polluted soils. To address these questions, a 120-day laboratory experiment was conducted by applying two types of biochar derived from C4 crop residues to C3 paddy soils

Cadmium Elevates Methylmercury Levels in Rice Paddies via Microbial Adaptation and Biogeochemical Alterations.

Methylmercury (MeHg) in rice poses significant health risks to populations with rice-based diets. While cadmium (Cd) contamination of paddy soils is widespread, its role in influencing MeHg accumulation in rice remains unclear. We combined a nationwide survey of 103 rice paddies with controlled pot and incubation experiments to examine how Cd affects MeHg in soils and rice grains. Soil geochemical parameters, microbial community composition, and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of functional genes were analyzed to disentangle biological and geochemical mechanisms. Across field sites, Cd concentr

Exploring cadmium bioaccumulation and bioremediation mechanisms and related genes in soil microorganisms: a review.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that poses serious environmental and health risks. It reduces soil fertility and can cause renal failure, liver damage, bone fractures, hypercalciuria, and cancer in humans. Cd contamination in soil, originating from both natural and human activities, is especially concerning because it bioaccumulates in plants, entering the food chain and affecting crops like tomatoes, rice, cocoa, and lettuce. Understanding the mechanisms of Cd bioaccumulation and bioremediation in microorganisms isolated from Cd-contaminated soils is crucial for developing effectiv

Small-size polyethylene and polylactic microplastic alterations on soil aggregate formation with soil sterilization.

Soil microplastic contamination is emerging as a significant environmental concern affecting soil properties and biota, including soil aggregation. This study aimed to determine the influence of soil microplastics on soil aggregation, their impact through effects on soil microorganisms, and their effects on water and mechanical stability of soil aggregates. Soil incubation experiments were conducted using sterilized and non-sterilized soils with 15-μm polyethylene and polylactic microplastics over one month. Sterilized soils showed more water-stable aggregates, particularly in the 0.25-0.5 mm

Synergistic effects of combined application of biochar and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the safe production of rice in cadmium contaminated soil.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been shown to effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of heavy metal stress on their plant hosts. Nevertheless, the biological activities of AMF were concurrently compromised. Biochar (BC), as an abiotic factor, had the potential compensate for this limitation. To elucidate the synergistic effects of biotic and abiotic factors, a pot experiment was conducted to assess the impact of biochar and AMF on the growth, physiological traits, and genetic expression in rice plants subjected to Cd stress. The results demonstrated that biochar significantly inc

Application of an in-situ soil sampler for assessing subsurface biogeochemical dynamics in a diesel-contaminated coastal site during soil flushing operations.

Subsurface biogeochemistry and contaminant dynamics during the remediation of diesel-contamination by in-situ soil flushing were investigated at a site located in a coastal region. An in-situ sampler containing diesel-contaminated soils separated into two size fractions (<0.063- and <2-mm) was utilized in two monitoring wells: DH1 (located close to the injection and extraction wells for in-situ soil flushing) and DH2 (located beyond sheet piles placed to block the transport of leaked diesel). Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations and biogeochemical properties were monitored both in

Biodegradation of pentachloronitrobenzene by Cupriavidus sp. YNS-85 and its potential for remediation of contaminated soils.

Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) is a toxic chlorinated nitroaromatic compound. However, only a few bacteria have been reported to be able to utilize PCNB. In the present study, one pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB)-degrading bacterium, Cupriavidus sp. YNS-85, was isolated from a contaminated Panax notoginseng plantation. The strain co-metabolized 200 mg L-1 PCNB in aqueous solution with a removal rate of 73.8% after 5 days. The bacterium also degraded PCNB effectively under acid conditions (pH 4-6) and showed resistance to toxic trace elements (arsenic, copper, and cadmium). Its ability to utilize

Clinical, environmental, and serologic surveillance studies of melioidosis in Gabon, 2012-2013.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, an environmental gram-negative bacillus, is the causative agent of melioidosis and a bio-threat agent. Reports of B. pseudomallei isolation from soil and animals in East and West Africa suggest that melioidosis might be more widely distributed than previously thought. Because it has been found in equatorial areas with tropical climates, we hypothesized that B. pseudomallei could exist in Gabon. During 2012-2013, we conducted a seroprevalance study in which we set up microbiology facilities at a large clinical referral center and prospectively screened all febrile pat

Selection of trichloroethene (TCE) degrading bacteria that resist inactivation by TCE.

Two isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) utilizing bacteria, Alcaligenes denitrificans ssp. xylosoxidans JE 75 and Rhodococcus erythropolis JE 77, were identified as highly efficient cooxidizers of TCE, cis- and trans-dichloroethene, 1,1-dichloroethene and vinyl-chloride. Isoprene grown cells eliminate chloride from TCE in stoichiometric amounts and tolerate high concentrations of TCE.

The Interactions of Emergent Contaminants (ECs) with Soil Microbiome.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment pose a substantial worldwide problem. The pollution owing to these pollutants requires rigorous research due to their harmful impact on soil microbes, flora, fauna, and human health. This category contains a varied array of substances, including medications, personal care items, industrial chemicals, and microplastics. Such pollutants pose severe hazards to ecosystem integrity and biodiversity. Emerging pollutants largely come from anthropogenic activity, including industrial operations, and their abundance dramatically alters soil ecosystems. The

Fungal necromass dominates soil organic carbon accrual after decadal active restoration of alpine grassland.

Active (seeding native grasses) and passive (natural recovery via degradation factor removal) restoration practices regulate soil organic carbon (SOC) recovery in degraded grasslands through distinct mechanisms. We quantified microbial- (amino sugars) and plant-derived (lignin phenols) C contributions to SOC after a 10-year restoration of degraded grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Active restoration increased SOC to 17.8 and 18.1 g·kg-1 in the topsoil and subsoil, respectively, whereas passive restoration maintained SOC at degraded levels (9.3 and 3.5 g·kg-1). Microbial-derived C cont

Response of soil extracellular enzymes to global changes: A review.

Soil extracellular enzymes (EES) regulate the formation of substrates available to soil microbes and nutrient release by catalyzing the degradation of complex macromolecules in organic matter. Therefore, EES are the key catalysts in the microbial-mediated biogeochemical cycling, playing an important role in regulating ecosystem functions. We reviewed the research advances in the formation, sources, classification, and functions of EES, ela-borated on their responses and feedback mechanisms to global changes (including climate change and human activities). Decoupling of soil reactive oxidized and reduced nitrogen gas emissions across a coastal wetland reclamation chronosequence.

Soil reactive nitrogen (Nr) gas emissions significantly impact air quality and climate, yet the mechanisms regulating their co-emissions during coastal wetland reclamation remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated soil Nr dynamics across a 52-year coastal wetland reclamation chronosequence using integrated flux measurements, microbial analysis, and incubation experiments. We found soil ammonia (NH3) emissions dominated and increased with reclamation chronosequence, while nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) peaked at the mid-stage soils. Incubation results showed that elevated o

Liquor fermentation industry reshapes soil microbiomes and drives CO2 emissions via microbial dispersal.

The rapid expansion of industrial fermentation has raised concerns about its environmental impacts, particularly regarding microbial dispersal from production facilities into adjacent terrestrial ecosystems; however, the ecological and functional consequences of microbial introductions originating from fermentation facilities remain poorly elucidated. We studied eight Chinese liquor fermentation facilities spanning 26°-47°N and 83°-124°E, covering the major geographical range of the industry. Using large-scale soil metagenomics, in situ CO2 flux measurements, and microcosm experiments, we demo

2-line Ferrihydrite Enhance Microbial Synthesis of Plant Biostimulants in Composted Biosolid by Regulating Phyla Pseudomonadota and Actinomycetota.

The discovery of plant biostimulants (PBs) in sewage sludge offers a promising avenue for biosolids valorization. Here, the study investigates how two mineral additives, including 2-line ferrihydrite (a disordered iron oxide) and disordered birnessite (a manganese oxide), modulate microbial activity and molecular pathways to enhance PB production during aerobic sludge composting. Application of 2-line ferrihydrite significantly promotes the synthesis of growth-promoting PBs, including arginine, valine, decanoic acid, and indoleacetic acid (IAA), while disordered birnessite primarily enhances r

Improving soil function properties in semi-arid regions using modified-chitosan and biochar.

Understanding soil function is crucial for restoring degraded ecosystems, necessitating the evaluation of soil characteristics and processes. Soil amendments can significantly enhance various soil functions, particularly water retention, organic carbon storage, and microbial activity. However, the combined effects of these amendments on soil properties in semi-arid regions remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the impact of biochar and modified chitosan applications on the physico-chemical and microbial properties of soil at a depth of 0-20 cm in the semi-arid rangelands of Iran.

[Characteristics of Paddy Soil Organic Carbon Mineralization and Influencing Factors Under Different Water Conditions and Microbial Biomass Levels].

Paddy soil often undergoes frequent dry-wet alternation. The change in water status not only affects the physical and chemical properties of the soil, but also changes the structure and diversity of the soil microbial communities, which in turn determines the rate of soil organic carbon mineralization. However, the effects of different water conditions and soil microbial biomass levels on the process of soil organic carbon mineralization and its mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, this study took typical subtropical paddy soil as the research object, applied a laboratory incubation experi

Excessive nitrogen addition accelerates N assimilation and P utilization by enhancing organic carbon decomposition in a Tibetan alpine steppe.

High amounts of deposited nitrogen (N) dramatically influence the stability and functions of alpine ecosystems by changing soil microbial community functions, but the mechanism is still unclear. To investigate the impacts of increased N deposition on microbial community functions, a 2-year multilevel N addition (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kg N ha-1 year-1) field experiment was set up in an alpine steppe on the Tibetan Plateau. Soil microbial functional genes (GeoChip 4.6), together with soil enzyme activity, soil organic compounds and environmental variables, were used to explore the response o
