Effectiveness of amendments on the spread and phytotoxicity of contaminants in metal-arsenic polluted soil.

A metal-arsenic polluted soil from sulphide-mine waste was treated, in all possible combinations, with two different amounts of marble sludge (98% CaCO3), compost (41% organic carbon), and Byferrox (70% Fe). Lixiviate and pore water from each treated and untreated soil were analysed, and lettuce-seed bioassays were performed. None of the treatments decreased the electrical conductivity of lixiviates or the concentrations of all pollutants found in both solutions. Marble sludge and compost increased the pH values and decreased the zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations in both solutions

The effect of earthworms on copper fractionation of freshly and long-term polluted soils.

We investigated the effects of earthworm activity on the bioavailability of Cu in soil. The bioavailable fraction was estimated using sequential extraction, and the results of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction were analyzed for comparison. Changes in the Cu fraction were compared in Cu-spiked soil (high bioavailability) and long-term polluted field soil (low bioavailability) with approximately equivalent total Cu concentrations. Earthworm activity decreased the bioavailable fraction in the Cu-spiked soil, where earthworm body Cu concentrations did not affect the bioavailable

Chromatite Ca[CrO4] in soil polluted with electroplating effluents (Zabierzów, Poland).

Chromatite, Ca[CrO(4)] (space group I41/amd), was found as yellow precipitates between the particles of soil, heavily polluted with chromium(VI)-bearing electroplating effluents and weathered subsoil rocks (marly limestones, marls). X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have showed the precipitates to be almost pure Ca[CrO(4)]. The chromatite occurs mainly as coatings 5-30 microm large and prismatic grains 20-100 microm long. It was formed and preserved due to dissolution of calcium carbonate by electroplating effluents containing Cr(VI). Al

Behavior of hexavalent chromium in a polluted groundwater: redox processes and immobilization in soils.

This work describes the chemical mechanisms governing transport and reduction of hexavalent chromium in soils of a contaminated industrial waste landfill. Groundwater and soil analyses indicate that the main source of chromium is a slag heap essentially consisting of mill tailings. In the groundwater, downstream migration of Cr(IV) is limited thanks to a redox mechanism involving chromate ions and ferrous ions or Fe(II)-bearing minerals. High Fe2+ concentrations in the groundwater are a result of pyrite residues from old activities at the site. Analyses of soil samples reveal that chromium is

Extremely High Soil Copper Content, yet Low Phytotoxicity: A Unique Case of Monometallic Soil Pollution at Kargaly, Russia.

Ecotoxicological studies on soil metal toxicity often rely on artificially contaminated soils. A major difficulty in using soils contaminated by anthropogenic activities (e.g., mining and agriculture) is the presence of multiple metals, which can make it impossible to distinguish the toxic effects of a particular metal. Therefore, sites with monometallic pollution have great potential for ecotoxicological research. One such site is an agricultural field in Kargaly, Orenburg region, Russia, where copper mining and smelting activities were carried out during the 18th-20th centuries. Samples of M

Remediation of polluted soil by a two-stage treatment system: desorption of phenanthrene in soil and electrochemical treatment to recover the extraction agent.

In this study, the feasibility of a two-stage treatment process for the remediation of soil contaminated with phenanthrene as a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) has been assessed at laboratory scale. The initial stage of the process involved contacting contaminated soil with a solution of Tween 80 to enhance the desorption of phenanthrene from soil. In order to simulate a flushing process this initial stage was carried out in a washing packed-bed soil column. At the optimised conditions the total phenanthrene removal attained a value of almost 65% after 3 days. The second stage of t

Release of organochlorine pollutants from forest fires: 2. possible long-term migration from ash and burnt soil.

The ash and burnt soil could release pollutants in a long term after forest fires, which poses health risks to ecosystems and human population. To date, our understanding of residues and release of organochlorine pollutants (OCPs) from ash and burnt soil after forest fires remains limited. In this study, a simulated fire via the burning of litter, grass, and humus was conducted in the Tibetan forest, while ashes and soil profiles after an actual fire event were sampled in half a year and three years after the fire. It was found that the ash-residue OCPs accounted up to 40 % of the total observ

Phytotoxic indicators of soils after pollution by oil by treatment of biochar and sodium humate.

Petroleum hydrocarbons are highly toxic and carcinogenic substances that adversely affect ecosystems and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of biochar and sodium humate treatments on phytotoxic indicators of soils contaminated with oil. The results show that Haplic Chernozem is more sensitive to remediation than Haplic Cambisol, as evidenced by a significantly greater reduction in the integral phytotoxicity index (IPT). Oil pollution in both Haplic Chernozem and Haplic Cambisol led to a decrease in radish root growth compared to the control group. Application of biochar at a

Dirty Earth, Diseased Hearts: Soil, Water, and Plastic Pollution in the Cardiovascular Exposome.

Healthy soils and clean water are essential for human survival, yet, both are increasingly compromised by chemical and plastic pollution. This preventable crisis causes an estimated 9 million premature deaths each year, including about 0.9 million linked to soil pollution and 1.3 million to water pollution. In 2019 alone, pollution contributed to 5.5 million cardiovascular deaths, underscoring its role in the global burden of non-communicable disease. A key underrecognized driver is the rapid rise in plastic production and plastic-associated chemicals. Global plastic output has increased more

Reducing Soil-Emitted Nitrous Acid as a Feasible Strategy for Tackling Ozone Pollution.

Severe ozone (O3) pollution has been a major air quality issue and affects environmental sustainability in China. Conventional mitigation strategies focusing on reducing volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain complex and challenging. Here, through field flux measurements and laboratory simulations, we observe substantial nitrous acid (HONO) emissions (FHONO) enhanced by nitrogen fertilizer application at an agricultural site. The observed FHONO significantly improves model performance in predicting atmospheric HONO and leads to regional O3 increases by 37%. We also demonst

Spatiotemporal variation of soil heavy metals in China: The pollution status and risk assessment.

Soil heavy metal pollution has been a serious and widespread problem in China. Although more attention has been paid on soil pollution status of heavy metals in China, systematic reviews on the spatiotemporal distribution of soil heavy metals and their related health risk considering different land use types at a national scale are still lacking. In this review, we extracted concentrations of seven heavy metals in soils including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu), assessed the spatiotemporal distribution of soil heavy metal concent

In-situ immobilization of cadmium-polluted upland soil: A ten-year field study.

In-situ immobilization is an effective and economically viable strategy for remediation of soil extensively polluted with heavy metals. The long-term sustainability is critical for the remediation practice. In the present study, a ten-year experiment was performed in a Cd-polluted agricultural field to evaluate the long-term stability of lime, silicon fertilizer (SF), fused calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (FCMP), bone charcoal, steel slag, and blast furnace slag with one-off application. All amendments had no significant effect on biomass but significantly reduced Cd uptake by Artemisia

Heavy metal solubility in podzolic soils exposed to the alkalizing effect of air pollutants.

The heavy metal content of pine forest soil was studied near the boundary between Russia and Estonia, an area characterized by large amounts of acidic and basic air pollutants, mainly sulfur dioxide and calcium. Alkalization dominates the processes in soil, since sulfur is adsorbed only in small quantities, and calcium is much better adsorbed. In addition to Ca, great amounts of Al, Fe, K, and Mg are accumulated in the humus layer due to air pollution. The heavy metal content has increased. The exchangeable content of heavy metals was in many cases much higher in polluted alkaline soils than i

Regional consistency in microbial community responses to hydrocarbon pollution in maritime Antarctic soils.

Antarctica, though remote and sparsely inhabited, faces significant ecological risks due to human activities and settlements that generate, among others, fuel leaks. In particular, maritime ice-free soils are becoming increasingly vulnerable to environmental disturbances, particularly hydrocarbon (HC) contamination, which represents a significant ecological threat. Low temperatures and limited nutrients reduce microbial degradation rates, allowing contamination to persist for decades. Despite their ecological importance, the structure and environmental drivers of Antarctic soil microbial commu

Prediction of BTEX volatilization in polluted soil based on the sorption potential energy theory.

Initial volatile concentration (Cs0) is a crucial parameter for the migration and diffusion of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) from the soil to the atmosphere. The acquisition of Cs0 is, however, time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study developed a prediction model for Cs0 based on theoretical analysis and experimental simulations. The model was established by correlating the molecular kinetic and sorption potential energy. The pore structure and pore size distribution of the soil were analyzed based on the fractal theory of porous media, followed by calculating the sorption potential

Pollution and mobility of heavy metals in the soils of a typical agricultural zone in eastern China.

The pollution of heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural soils profoundly threatens national food safety, and the mobility and environmental behaviors of HMs are closely implicated in crop safety. Here, we assessed the pollution level and mobility of ten HMs and explored their environmental behaviors in the soils of three different land uses from a main crop production zone in eastern China. The concentrations of HMs in the soils were higher in the farmland than the woodland and wasteland, and Cd showed a relatively higher pollution and ecological risk levels compared to other metals. Cadmium was d

Bioremediation of mercury-polluted soil and water by the plant symbiotic fungus Metarhizium robertsii.

Fungi are central to every terrestrial and many aquatic ecosystems, but the mechanisms underlying fungal tolerance to mercury, a global pollutant, remain unknown. Here, we show that the plant symbiotic fungus Metarhizium robertsii degrades methylmercury and reduces divalent mercury, decreasing mercury accumulation in plants and greatly increasing their growth in contaminated soils. M. robertsii does this by demethylating methylmercury via a methylmercury demethylase (MMD) and using a mercury ion reductase (MIR) to reduce divalent mercury to volatile elemental mercury. M. robertsii can also rem

Characterization and origin of organic and inorganic pollution in urban soils in Pisa (Tuscany, Italy).

We assessed the quality of 31 urban soils in Pisa by analyzing total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and the platinum group elements (PGEs). The risk was evaluated by the geological accumulation index (I geo) and the enrichment factor (EF). Results were compared with those obtained from a non-urban site and with the quantitative limits fixed by Italian legislation. In nearly all the monitored sites, the legal limit for TPH of 60 mg/kg in residential areas was exceeded, indicating widespread and intense pollution throughout the entire city area. The I geo indicate
