Radiocesium in fallen leaves controlled by leaching and associated soil particles: litterbag experiments in Fukushima forests.

The contamination of forest ecosystems by radiocesium (137Cs) released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident has seriously damaged forestry activities in Fukushima. Previous field-based descriptive studies have reported that a considerable proportion of 137Cs remains in the soil O horizon, where the presence of various types of organic matter at different stages of decomposition contributes to both strong retention of 137Cs by decomposing litter and a heterogeneous spatial distribution. To investigate the dynamics and mobility of 137Cs during litter decomposition and to inte

Land application of mine water causes minimal uranium loss offsite in the wet-dry tropics: Ranger Uranium Mine, Northern Territory, Australia.

Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) is situated in the wet-dry tropics of Northern Australia. Land application (irrigation) of stockpile (ore and waste) runoff water to natural woodland on the mine lease is a key part of water management at the mine. Consequently, the soil in these Land Application Areas (LAAs) presents a range of uranium (U) and other metals concentrations. Knowledge of seasonal and temporal changes in soil U and physicochemical parameters at RUM LAAs is important to develop suitable management and rehabilitation strategies. Therefore, soil samples were collected from low, medium, high

Uranium mine rehabilitation: the story of the South Alligator Valley intervention.

The rehabilitation of radioactively contaminated sites is an activity generally regarded with suspicion by the community. This is certainly the case for Australian Aboriginal traditional landowners. This paper describes the historical background to, and the successful development and implementation of, a consultation and planning process to rehabilitate former uranium mining and milling facilities on Aboriginal lands of the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. The process of developing an appropriate community communication and consultation process to allay concern

Immobilization of cesium-137 and uranium in contaminated sediments using soil amendments.

Batch and dynamic leaching methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of hydroxyapatite (HA), illite, and zeolite, alone and in combination, as soil additives for reducing the migration of cesium-137 (137Cs+) and uranium (U) from contaminated sediments. Amendment treatments ranging from 0 to 50 g kg(-1) were added to the sediment and equilibrated in 0.001 M CaCl2. After equilibration, the treatment supernatants were analyzed for 137Cs+, U, PO4, and other metals. The residual sediments were then extracted overnight using one of the following: 1.0 M NH4Cl, 0.5 M CaCl2, or the Toxicity Chara

Bioconcentration potential of 210Po and 210Pb in the gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus): Dietary intake and health risk assessment.

The Gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus) is prized as an edible fungus in northern climates. This species has a strong predilection for accumulating radiocaesium (134/137Cs), but the potential to accumulate other toxic nuclides is unknown. 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations were determined in the fruiting bodies of this species and the associated forest soil (0-10 cm layer) collected at 20 sites across Northern Poland. Concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb in mushrooms ranged from 0.92 to 10.0 and 0.36 to 13.1 Bq∙kg-1 db and from 10.5 to 46.6 and 11.0 to 46.2 Bq∙kg-1 db in soils, respective

An estimate by two methods of thyroid absorbed doses due to BRAVO fallout in several Northern Marshall Islands.

Estimates of the thyroid absorbed doses due to fallout originating from the 1 March 1954 BRAVO thermonuclear test on Bikini Atoll have been made for several inhabited locations in the Northern Marshall Islands. Rongelap, Utirik, Rongerik and Ailinginae Atolls were also inhabited on 1 March 1954, where retrospective thyroid absorbed doses have previously been reconstructed. The current estimates are based primarily on external exposure data, which were recorded shortly after each nuclear test in the Castle Series, and secondarily on soil concentrations of 137Cs in samples collected in 1978 and

Radiological characterisation and ecological risk assessment of an alum shale waste site in Kvarntorp, Sweden.

Industrial waste sites containing naturally occurring radioactive material represent long-term and globally relevant environmental challenges, particularly where chemical and radiological stressors affect terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The study site is a legacy alum shale mining waste pile and is one of the most contaminated sites in Sweden. Ongoing exothermic reactions within the pile maintain elevated temperatures, creating a challenging and complex environment with evolving contaminant mobility and exposure pathways. As the pile cools, increased water infiltration is expected to incre

Secondary radioactive contamination from manure application: Transfer and excretion of 137Cs and 40K in cattle under chronic intake.

A radioecological field study was conducted in agroecosystems of the Bryansk Region with elevated 137Cs soil contamination densities (178-616 kBq m-2) during the long-term post-Chernobyl period. Activity concentrations and distributions of 137Cs and 40K were determined in soils, pasture herbage, feeds, milk, and excreta during housing and grazing periods. Herd-level excretion fluxes were quantified by gamma spectrometry, and quasi-steady-state conditions were verified using mass-balance assessment. Empirical ratio-based transfer parameters (transfer factors and concentration ratios) were deriv

Proficiency testing for official laboratories for 137Cs and 134Cs determination in soil.

Incidents involving the release of caesium radioactive isotopes into the environment have prompted the adoption of necessary measures to protect the public. A network of official laboratories has been established across Poland to routinely measure the level of radioactive contamination in food. The participation of nine selected laboratories in proficiency testing serves both to demonstrate competence and to confirm the reliability of results. The certified reference material IAEA-478 ″Radionuclides in Soil" was used for this testing. The value assigned from the certificate was determined on t

Radiological assessment of petroleum source rocks from the Middle Magdalena Valley basin in Colombia.

Colombia is currently assessing unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs; however, despite over five decades of conventional oil and gas operations, systematic radiological studies of petroleum formations remain scarce. To address this gap, eight source rock samples from five oil wells in the Tablazo and La Luna formations of the Middle Magdalena Valley Basin (MMVB) were analyzed by gamma- and alpha-spectrometry to quantify naturally occurring radionuclides from the 238U and 232 Th decay series and 40K. Complementary ICP-MS and XRD analyses determined elemental and mineralogical composition. The

External radiation dose reconstruction for settlements near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, Kazakhstan, in the international multicenter study: a detailed review and comparative analysis of the initial data.

Studies on health effects of radiation exposure to residents around the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (SNTS), Kazakhstan, are necessary for epidemiological assessment of radiation-related health risks after low-dose irradiation. Radiation dose estimates are the principal point for radiation epidemiological studies. These estimates should be based on the most reliable initial data, used for dose estimations. The comparative critical analysis of various available archival and published initial data, namely values of historical exposure dose rates and values of soil contamination by 137Cs in co

Bioremediation of uranium enriched coal fly ash based on microbially induced calcite precipitation.

Coal fly ash (CFA) is an essential raw material in brickmaking industry worldwide. There are some coal mines with a relatively high content of uranium (U) in the Xinjiang region of China that are yet understudied. The CFA from these coal mines poses substantial environmental risks due to the concentrated uranium amount after coal burning. In this paper, we demonstrated a calcifying ureolytic bacterium Halomonas sp. SBC20 for its biocementation of U in CFA based on microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP). Rectangle-shaped CFA bricks were made from CFA using bacterial cells, and an elec

Radiostrontium transport in plants and phytoremediation.

Radiostrontium is a common product of nuclear fission and was emitted into the environment in the course of nuclear weapon tests as well as from nuclear reactor accidents. The release of 90Sr and 89Sr into the environment can pose health threats due to their characteristics such as high specific activities and easy access in human body due to its chemical analogy to calcium. Radiostrontium enters the human food chain by the consumption of plants grown on sites comprising fission-derived radionuclides. For humans, Sr is not an essential element, but, due to solubility in water and homology with

Monte Carlo calculation of dose rate conversion factors for external exposure to photon emitters in soil.

The dose rate conversion factors D(CF) (absorbed dose rate in air per unit activity per unit of soil mass, nGy h(-1) per Bq kg(-1)) are calculated 1 m above ground for photon emitters of natural radionuclides uniformly distributed in the soil. Three Monte Carlo codes are used: 1) The MCNP code of Los Alamos; 2) The GEANT code of CERN; and 3) a Monte Carlo code developed in the Nuclear Technology Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The accuracy of the Monte Carlo results is tested by the comparison of the unscattered flux obtained by the three Monte Carlo codes with an indep

Uptake, translocation and fate of trichloroacetic acid in a Norway spruce/soil system.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a secondary atmospheric pollutant formed by photooxidation of chlorinated solvents in the troposphere--it has, however, recently been ranked among natural organohalogens. Its herbicidal properties might be one of the factors adversely affecting forest health. TCA accumulates rapidly in conifer needles and influences the detoxification capacity in the trees. The aim of the investigations--a survey of which is briefly given here--was to elucidate the uptake, distribution and fate of TCA in Norway spruce. For this purpose young nursery-grown plants of Norway spruce (

Pilot scale application of 226Ra-contaminated soil leaching remediation.

To address the issue of soil contamination caused by associated elements during the extraction and processing of radioactive minerals, this study employed two types of chemical leaching methods, one based on organic acids and the other on carbonates, to remediate radium-contaminated soil. Large-scale soil slurry reactors were used in field experiments to investigate the effects of acidic and alkaline leaching agents on the removal of 226Ra from naturally contaminated soil, and the optimal operational conditions were determined. The combined use of organic acids, salts and solubilizers has demo
