Critical reviews in food science and nutrition2026eng
Worldwide, both adults and children continue to develop metabolic diseases at an alarming rate. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to a cluster of risk factors associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. The development of MetS is complex, and its mitigation requires multiple complementary strategies. One promising approach is dietary intervention with nutraceutical-rich foods that strengthen metabolic organs such as the liver and intestines against oxidative stress and inflammation. Potatoes are a widely consumed crop grown globally and are rich in macronutrients and bioactiv

E3 ubiquitin ligases play crucial roles in plant growth and development, as well as in responses to various stresses. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms of E3 ligases under heat stress remain largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated 2 homologous E3 ubiquitin ligases, SlXERICO1 and SlXERICO3 (SlXERICO1/3), which were significantly responsive to heat stress in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Our results showed that the slxerico1 and slxerico3 mutants had lower heat tolerance compared with wild-type plants. A yeast 2-hybrid screen identified the heat shock factor (Hsf) transc

Uterine leiomyomas affect nearly 30% of women of reproductive age, contributing to increased risks of type II diabetes, infertility, and psychological stress. Emerging studies suggest that somatic mutations and cytogenetic abnormalities, including transcriptional dysregulation involving IGLON5, could serve as biomarkers for early intervention. In pursuit of alternative therapies with minimal side effects, this study evaluated the antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antifibrotic potentials of Solanum macrocarpon (African eggplant) in albino rats with monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced uterine leiomy

Bioactive lipids widely found in daily consumed plants and animals are essential or beneficial to health and some of them are important physiological regulators in the human body. In our current investigation, 18 bioactive lipids (1-18), including 8 sphingolipids (1-8), 7 oxylipins (9-15), 3 phenolic lipids (16-18) were isolated from the fruits of Solanum xanthocarpum. And compounds 1, 9, 15, 16, and 18 were new lipids. In this study, homologues (4-8, 16, and 17) and configuration isomers (2 and 3) of bioactive lipids were separated, and NMR combined with MS/MS2 was an effective method to iden

Post-translational modification of proteins through lysine succinylation plays important regulatory roles in living cells. Lysine succinylation was recently identified as a novel post-translational modification in Escherichia coli, yeast, Toxoplasma gondii, HeLa cells, and mouse liver. Interestingly, only a few sites of lysine succinylation have been detected in plants to date. In this study, we identified 347 sites of lysine succinylation in 202 proteins in tomato by using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Succinylated proteins are implicated in the regulation of diverse metabolic processes,

Solanum guaraniticum is a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family popularly known in Brazil as jurubeba or false-jurubeba. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of crude extract and chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions from its leaves, verifying the ability to remove reactive species and identify and quantify phenolic compounds. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest amount of total polyphenols (546.57 ± 2.35 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and the lowest IC(50) (9.11 ± 0.75 µg/mL) by the DPPH method. Furthermore, the chloroform fraction presented the

An ethnobotanical field study carried out in 200 rural communities determined that the leaves of Solanum chrysotrichum Schldl. are used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of skin mycosis, being particularly recommended to cure Tinae pedis. Clinical trials were performed using a cream containing 5% of a methanolic leaf extract of this plant. Results showed that 45% of the patients were completely cured after 4 weeks of topical treatment. The rest of the cases improved notably in comparison with the control group of patients using the habitual miconazole treatment. The same plant

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivation is severely constrained by multiple pathogens, among which late blight caused by the oomycete P. infestans remains the most destructive disease. Developing pathogen-resistant cultivars can enhance productivity and reduce fungicide use in potato, where R-gene-based resistance is often overcome by evolving pathogen populations. Targeting susceptibility (S) genes represents a promising alternative strategy for improving disease resistance. Here, we employed CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing to introduce a targeted missense single-nucleotide polymorphism in the s

Solanum glaucophyllum is a toxic calcinogenic plant endemic to Central Argentina and is widely recognized as the primary cause of enzootic calcinosis in ruminants. Although the systemic calcification induced by this plant is well documented, its potential impact on reproductive performance remains underexplored. The present study reports the first evidence of calcinosis affecting the female reproductive organs of ruminants. Reproductive tissues-including the uterus, ovary, and oviduct-were obtained from a non-pregnant 4-year-old Texel ewe and a 6-year-old Hereford cow that exhibited gross sign

Solanum paniculatum L. is used commonly in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of liver and gastrointestinal disorders. The freeze-dried aqueous extracts (WEs) obtained from distinct parts of the plant (flowers, fruits, leaves, stems and roots) were tested to determine their antiulcer and antisecretory gastric acid activities using mice. The aqueous extracts of roots, stems and flowers inhibited gastric acid secretion in pylorus-ligated mice with ED50 values of 418, 777 and 820 mg/kg body wt. (i.d.), respectively. Extracts of leaves (0.5-2 g/kg body wt., i.d.) did not affect gastric secr
