Post-Translational Control of Nitrate Reductase Under Elevated CO2 in Solanum lycopersicum: Carbon-Nitrogen Signaling and Photosynthetic Acclimation.

Rising atmospheric CO2 is altering carbon-nitrogen interactions in C3 crops, with tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) showing enhanced carbon assimilation but frequently reduced nitrogen acquisition and assimilation. Nitrate reductase (NR), the rate-limiting enzyme in nitrate reduction, plays a central role by integrating nitrate assimilation with carbon metabolism and nitric oxide (NO) signaling. This review summarizes current knowledge of NR regulation in tomato under elevated CO2 (eCO2), focusing on post-translational mechanisms and their contribution to photosynthetic acclimation. Elevated CO

Alpha-momorcharin preserves catalase activity to inhibit viral infection by disrupting the 2b-CAT interaction in Solanum lycopersicum.

Many host factors of plants are used by viruses to facilitate viral infection. However, little is known about how alpha-momorcharin (αMMC) counters virus-mediated attack strategies in tomato. Our present research revealed that the 2b protein of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) directly interacted with catalases (CATs) and inhibited their activities. Further analysis revealed that transcription levels of catalase were induced by CMV infection and that virus accumulation increased in CAT-silenced or 2b-overexpressing tomato plants compared with that in control plants, suggesting that the interaction

Effects of Fe and Mn deficiencies on the protein profiles of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) xylem sap as revealed by shotgun analyses.

The aim of this work was to study the effects of Fe and Mn deficiencies on the xylem sap proteome of tomato using a shotgun proteomic approach, with the final goal of elucidating plant response mechanisms to these stresses. This approach yielded 643 proteins reliably identified and quantified with 70% of them predicted as secretory. Iron and Mn deficiencies caused statistically significant and biologically relevant abundance changes in 119 and 118 xylem sap proteins, respectively. In both deficiencies, metabolic pathways most affected were protein metabolism, stress/oxidoreductases and cell wa

Sodic alkaline stress mitigation by interaction of nitric oxide and polyamines involves antioxidants and physiological strategies in Solanum lycopersicum.

Nitric oxide (NO) and polyamines (PAs) are two kinds of important signal in mediating plant tolerance to abiotic stress. In this study, we observed that both NO and PAs decreased alkaline stress in tomato plants, which may be a result of their role in regulating nutrient balance and reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby protecting the photosynthetic system from damage. Further investigation indicated that NO and PAs induced accumulation of each other. Furthermore, the function of PAs could be removed by a NO scavenger, cPTIO. On the other hand, application of MGBG, a PA synthesis inhibitor, d

Hydrogen sulfide as a key mediator in melatonin-induced enhancement of cold tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings.

Melatonin (MT) is a key bioactive molecule that enhances plant tolerance to cold stress; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study demonstrates that foliar application of 100 μM MT improves cold tolerance in tomato seedlings by activating antioxidant enzyme systems and cold-responsive pathways. Notably, endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels are also elevated, suggesting a potential role in MT-mediated responses. Moreover, treatment with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, an H2S donor) further enhances MT-induced cold tolerance by increasing antioxidant capacity, promoting the ac

Disruption of SlCNGC18 enhances Cucumber mosaic virus resistance and drought tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Micro-Tom).

BACKGROUND: Tomato is a globally important crop that is frequently affected by stress linked to viral infection and drought, both of which significantly reduce yield and quality. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a major pathogen that induces severe disease symptoms, while drought limits plant growth and productivity in general. Calcium signaling through cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) plays a critical role in plant responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. However, it remains unclear how the tomato SlCNGC18, a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana CNGC4 (DND2), regulates viral resistance

Content of Two Major Steroidal Glycoalkaloids in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom) Mutant Lines at Different Ripening Stages.

Esculeoside A and tomatine are two major steroidal alkaloids in tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum) that exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and anti-hyperlipidemia activities. Tomatine contained in immature tomato fruit is converted to esculeoside A as the fruit matures. To develop new tomato varieties based on the content analysis of functional secondary metabolites, 184 mutant lines were generated from the original cultivar (S. lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom) by radiation breeding. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with evaporative light scattering detector was used to identify

Contribution of Tomato torrado virus Vp26 coat protein subunit to systemic necrosis induction and virus infectivity in Solanum lycopersicum.

BACKGROUND: Tomato torrado virus (ToTV) infection manifests with burn-like symptoms on leaves, leaflets and upper stem parts of susceptible infected plants. The symptoms caused by ToTV may be considered as one of the most severe virus-induced forms of systemic necrosis, which spreads within the whole plant and leads to a lethal phenotype. However, to date there are no data revealing which viral genes encode for a specific pathogenicity determinant that triggers the plant necrotic response for any torradovirus. In this study we evaluated the influence of three coat protein subunits of ToTV: Vp2

Spermine Is a Potent Plant Defense Activator Against Gray Mold Disease on Solanum lycopersicum, Phaseolus vulgaris, and Arabidopsis thaliana.

Polyamines (PAs) are ubiquitous aliphatic amines that play important roles in growth, development, and environmental stress responses in plants. In this study, we report that exogenous application of spermine (Spm) is effective in the induction of resistance to gray mold disease, which is caused by the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea, on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), and Arabidopsis thaliana. High throughput transcriptome analysis revealed a priming role for the Spm molecule in the genus Arabidopsis, resulting in strong upregulation of several importan

Characterization of GSI and UI in Solanum chilense and Its Hybrids With S. lycopersicum: Uncovering Genotype-Specific Mechanisms and Candidate Genes.

Reproductive barriers in wild tomato relatives limit the introgression of valuable stress-resistance traits into cultivated tomato, yet the molecular mechanisms governing these barriers in Solanum chilense remain poorly understood compared to model species like Nicotiana alata or Solanum pennellii. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and transcriptional architecture of gametophytic self-incompatibility and unilateral incompatibility in Solanum chilense and its interspecific hybrids with Solanum lycopersicum. We combined phenotypic assays of pollen tube growth and fruit set with qua

Elucidating the mechanism of action of copper heptagluconate on the plant immune system against Pseudomonas syringae in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L).

BACKGROUND: Phytopathogenic problems caused by the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae in tomato are becoming more serious due to the emergence of strains resistant to classical pesticides. This has led to research into new formulations with lower environmental problems. One of the most promising alternatives to the use of classical pesticides is the induction of natural plant defences. New formulations based on Cu complexed with heptagluconic acid induce plant innate defences and could be an alternative to classical treatments based on inorganic Cu against bacterial speck. To study the ef

Emissions of volatile organic compounds from aboveground and belowground parts of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Root systems represent a source of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that may significantly contribute to the atmospheric VOC emissions from agroecosystems and shape soil microbial activity. To gain deeper insights into the role of roots in the VOC emissions from crops, we developed a dynamic chamber with isolated aboveground and belowground compartments, allowing for simultaneous measurements of VOC fluxes from both compartments in controlled conditions. We continuously monitored VOC emissions from intact plants of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) i) over 24 h

Comparative Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses Reveal Mechanisms of Exogenous Spermidine-Induced Tolerance to Low-Iron Stress in Solanum lycopersicum L.

Iron (Fe) deficiency in plants is a major problem in agriculture. Therefore, we investigated both the physiological features and molecular mechanisms of plants' response to low-Fe (LF) stress along with the mitigation of LF with exogenous spermidine (Spd) in tomato plants. The results showed that exogenous Spd foliar application relieved the suppressing effect of LF stress on tomato plants by regulating the photosynthetic efficiency, chlorophyll metabolism, antioxidant levels, organic acid secretion, polyamine metabolism and osmoregulatory systems. Analysis of transcriptomic sequencing results
