Somatostatin-like immunoreactivity was measured by radioimmunoassay with a monoclonal antibody in lungs from perinatal guinea pigs (62 +/- 2 days of gestation). This case report details the management of a patient with cirrhosis who developed chylous pleural and peritoneal effusions. The patient, with a 28-year history of untreated hepatitis B, presented with dyspnea and cough after traveling to a high-altitude area. A case of von Recklinghausen's disease with double somatostatin producing neuroendocrine tumour of the ampulla and duodenum is reported. A search of the world's literature revealed 28 patients with immunohistologically proven duodenal somatostatinoma associated with type I neurofibromatosis.
