The Early Bird Catches the Parasite: Potential Invertebrate Pathway for Baylisascaris procyonis to Infect Songbirds.

Baylisascaris procyonis larva migrans is a debilitating and potentially lethal zoonotic, parasitic condition that can infect a large variety of paratenic hosts, including birds and mammals and even humans. The typical pathway to develop baylisascariasis is to ingest B. procyonis eggs from contaminated feces or through contaminated soil where contaminated fecal matter has decayed. I hypothesized that earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) living in soils contaminated with B. procyonis eggs from decayed feces of its definitive host, raccoons (Procyon lotor), would incidentally ingest B. procyonis egg

Human Salmonellosis Outbreak Linked to Salmonella Typhimurium Epidemic in Wild Songbirds, United States, 2020-2021.

Salmonella infection causes epidemic death in wild songbirds, with potential to spread to humans. In February 2021, public health officials in Oregon and Washington, USA, isolated a strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium from humans and a wild songbird. Investigation by public health partners ultimately identified 30 illnesses in 12 states linked to an epidemic of Salmonella Typhimurium in songbirds. We report a multistate outbreak of human salmonellosis associated with songbirds, resulting from direct handling of sick and dead birds or indirect contact with contaminated birdfeeders

Early-life exposure to artificial light at night elevates physiological stress in free-living songbirds☆.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) can disrupt adaptive patterns of physiology and behavior that promote high fitness, resulting in physiological stress and elevation of steroid glucocorticoids (corticosterone, CORT in birds). Elevated CORT may have particularly profound effects early in life, with the potential for enduring effects that persist into adulthood. Research on the consequences of early-life exposure to ALAN remains limited, especially outside of the laboratory, and whether light exposure affects CORT concentrations in wild nestling birds particularly remains to be elucidated. We use

Genetics, Not Weather, Informs Migration Behaviors in a Long-Distance Migrant Songbird.

Migration is the riskiest portion of the annual breeding cycle, with long-distance migratory birds enduring long periods of varied landscapes, dangerous weather, and geographical barriers such as long stretches of open water. Therefore, birds utilize a combination of both innate (i.e., genetic) and environmental cues to maximize their chances of survival during migration. Studies have suggested that short-distance migrants are more likely to adjust migration timing to match non-endogenous cues like local weather conditions, while long-distance migrants rely heavily on genetically-ingrained beh

From songbird to humans: The multifaceted roles of FOXP2 in speech and motor learning.

Motor learning involves a complex network of brain structures and is crucial for tasks like speech. The cerebral cortex, subcortical nuclei, and cerebellum are involved in motor learning and vocalization. Vocal learning has been demonstrated across species. However, it is a task that should be further studied and reevaluated, particularly in species considered non-vocal learners, to potentially uncover new insights. FOXP2, a transcription factor, has been implicated in speech learning and execution. Several variants have been involved in speech and cognitive impairments; the most studied is th

Circadian clock period length is not consistently linked to chronotype in a wild songbird.

Circadian clock properties vary between individuals and relate to variation in entrained timing in captivity. How this variation translates into behavioural differences in natural settings, however, is poorly understood. Here, we tested in great tits whether variation in the free-running period length (tau) under constant dim light (LL) was linked to the phase angle of the entrained rhythm ("chronotype") in captivity and in the wild, as recently indicated in our study species. We also assessed links between tau and the timing of first activity onset and offset under LL relative to the last exp

No effect of blood sampling or phytohaemagglutinin injection on postfledging survival in a wild songbird.

The injection of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and sampling of blood are widely used in studies of wild vertebrates to assess components of immune and endocrine function and health state and to obtain genetic material. Despite the pervasive use of these techniques in the life sciences, their potential effects on survival are rarely considered. For example, whether injection of the immunogen PHA into body parts critical for locomotion (e.g., the prepatagium, or wing web, in birds) affects survival has not been tested. Here, we test whether injection of PHA into the wing web and blood sampling from

Differential response of GnIH in the brain and gonads following acute stress in a songbird.

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) acts to inhibit reproduction at all levels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonad axis. GnIH expression and/or immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus increase with acute stress in some birds and mammals, and thus may be involved in stress-induced reproductive inhibition. Much is known about GnIH and stress in seasonal and continuous breeders, but far less is known about these interactions in opportunistic breeders. For opportunistically breeding animals, reproductive readiness is closely associated with unpredictable environmental cues, and thus the GnIH system

Corticosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in songbird plasma and brain: effects of season and acute stress.

Prolonged increases in plasma glucocorticoids can exacerbate neurodegeneration. In rats, these neurodegenerative effects can be reduced by dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an androgen precursor with anti-glucocorticoid actions. In song sparrows, season and acute restraint stress affect circulating levels of corticosterone and DHEA, and the effects of stress differ in plasma collected from the brachial and jugular veins. Jugular plasma is an indirect index of the neural steroidal milieu. Here, we directly measured corticosterone and DHEA in several brain regions and jugular plasma, and examined t

Noisy nests: Early-life noise exposure impacts songbird fitness.

Recent findings indicate that noise pollution - presented in the absence of other variables - has both immediate-term impacts on young birds' developmental rates and physiology as well as long-term effects on adult telomere length and reproductive success. This work highlights yet another set of negative impacts caused by anthropogenic noise, and suggests that the dramatic fitness consequences observed likely have implications for the evolution of learning and behavior in animals living in noisy environments.

A magnet attached to the forehead disrupts magnetic compass orientation in a migratory songbird.

For studies on magnetic compass orientation and navigation performance in small bird species, controlled experiments with orientation cages inside an electromagnetic coil system are the most prominent methodological paradigm. These are, however, not applicable when studying larger bird species and/or orientation behaviour during free flight. For this, researchers have followed a very different approach, attaching small magnets to birds, with the intention of depriving them of access to meaningful magnetic information. Unfortunately, results from studies using this approach appear rather incons

Environmentally relevant methylmercury exposure reduces the metabolic scope of a model songbird.

For most birds, energy efficiency and conservation are paramount to balancing the competing demands of self-maintenance, reproduction, and other demanding life history stages. Yet the ability to maximize energy output for behaviors like predator escape and migration is often also critical. Environmental perturbations that affect energy metabolism may therefore have important consequences for fitness and survival. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a global pollutant that has wide-ranging impacts on physiological systems, but its effects on the metabolism of birds and other vertebrates are poorly understo

Social information changes stress hormone receptor expression in the songbird brain.

Social information is used by many vertebrate taxa to inform decision-making, including resource-mediated movements, yet the mechanisms whereby social information is integrated physiologically to affect such decisions remain unknown. Social information is known to influence the physiological response to food reduction in captive songbirds. Red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) that were food reduced for several days showed significant elevations in circulating corticosterone (a "stress" hormone often responsive to food limitation) only if their neighbors were similarly food restricted. Physiologi

Afferents from vocal motor and respiratory effectors are recruited during vocal production in juvenile songbirds.

Learned behaviors require coordination of diverse sensory inputs with motivational and motor systems. Although mechanisms underlying vocal learning in songbirds have focused primarily on auditory inputs, it is likely that sensory inputs from vocal effectors also provide essential feedback. We investigated the role of somatosensory and respiratory inputs from vocal effectors of juvenile zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during the stage of sensorimotor integration when they are learning to imitate a previously memorized tutor song. We report that song production induced expression of the imme

Songbirds Adjust Oxygen-Carrying Capacity through Modulation of the Number Rather than the Size of Erythrocytes.

AbstractOver a lifetime, birds experience changing energy demands, requiring adjustment of their metabolism. Modulation of oxygen-carrying capacity is one way to adjust metabolism to new energy demands, and such modulation depends on hemoglobin concentration. However, little is known about whether the underlying cellular mechanisms controlling hemoglobin concentration are achieved by varying the number and/or size of erythrocytes. Here, we investigated the relationship between four directly measured hematological variables-hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, erythrocyte number, and erythrocy

Two distinct modes of forebrain circuit dynamics underlie temporal patterning in the vocalizations of young songbirds.

Accurate timing is a critical aspect of motor control, yet the temporal structure of many mature behaviors emerges during learning from highly variable exploratory actions. How does a developing brain acquire the precise control of timing in behavioral sequences? To investigate the development of timing, we analyzed the songs of young juvenile zebra finches. These highly variable vocalizations, akin to human babbling, gradually develop into temporally stereotyped adult songs. We find that the durations of syllables and silences in juvenile singing are formed by a mixture of two distinct modes

Response to geographic song variation predicts differential gene expression in the blood of a songbird.

Birdsong mediates territory acquisition and mate choice. In agonistic interactions, local songs generally elicit stronger responses than songs from more distant populations. However, the molecular mechanisms associated with differential responses to local vs. foreign songs are poorly understood. We addressed this knowledge gap by combining behavioral assays in the field with blood transcriptomic analysis, using a within-subjects design to ask whether male song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) show differential gene expression when exposed to playback of local and foreign songs. Transcriptomic prof

Population Dynamics in Songbird RA and HVC During Learned Motor-Vocal Behavior.

Complex, learned motor behaviors involve the coordination of large-scale neural activity across multiple brain regions, but our understanding of population-level neural dynamics within different regions tied to the same behavior remains limited. Here, we investigate the neural population dynamics underlying learned vocal production in awake, singing songbirds. Using Neuropixels probes, we record simultaneous extracellular activity from populations of neurons in two regions of the vocal-motor pathway in adult male zebra finches. In line with observations made in non-human primates during limb-b

Lunar cycle and moonlight intensity influence nocturnal migration patterns in a small songbird.

Lunar cycle and moonlight exposure have significant impacts on animal behaviour and physiology. The presence or absence of moonlight, along with predictable changes in brightness throughout the lunar cycle, can shape reproduction, foraging, communication, and other aspects of an animal's world. While it has been shown that invertebrates use the moonlight for orientation, little is known on the effect of the lunar cycle on migratory birds. We found that the lunar cycle affected the nocturnal migration activity of a diurnal songbird species, the Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis. The occurrence o
