Sound-localization deficits induced by lesions in the barn owl's auditory space map.

Barn owls possess a two-dimensional map of auditory space. The map appears in its final form in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICx) and is projected from there to the optic tectum (OT). To determine the role of the map in ICx or its projected version in OT in the localization of acoustic stimuli, head movements of three adult owls were recorded before and after lesioning parts of the map either in ICx or in OT. Small electrolytic lesions caused sound-localization deficits that were characterized by failures to turn, turns away from the sound source, increased response latenci

Studying dynamic sound source localization in a virtual maze with EEG and psychophysics.

Auditory scene analysis benefits from spatial separation of the sound sources to be disentangled. Studies characterizing the ability to localize sound sources have revealed that spatial ambiguities can be resolved by slightly moving the head. This implies that the auditory system must take into account how head movements displace the sensors (ears) relative to the sound source, in order to separate the consequences of own movement from actual movement of the sound source. Outside of the typical lab, not only the head can be turned, but also the whole body might move towards or away from the so

Sound localization in subjects with impaired hearing. Spatial-discrimination and interaural-discrimination tests.

In order to get a systematic picture of how various hearing impairments and neurologic disorders may affect sound localization, psychophysical spatial- and lateralization-discrimination measurements were performed on 140 subjects, including 69 with different types of hearing impairments, 32 with neurological diseases, and 39 with normal hearing. The quantities measured were: in the freefield, the horizontal minimum audible angle (MAA) at eight reference azimuths around the head and the vertical MAA straight ahead; with headphones, the just-noticeable difference (JND) in interaural time delay a

The interference of tinnitus on sound localization was related to the type of stimulus.

Spatial processing is a major cognitive function of hearing. Sound source localization is an intuitive evaluation of spatial hearing. Current evidence of the effect of tinnitus on sound source localization remains limited. The present study aimed to investigate whether tinnitus affects the ability to localize sound in participants with normal hearing and whether the effect is related to the type of stimulus. Overall, 40 participants with tinnitus and another 40 control participants without tinnitus were evaluated. The sound source discrimination tasks were performed on the horizontal plane. Pu

Localization of Free-Field Sound Sources in the Chronic Phase of Mild Ischemic Stroke.

Accurate sound localization relies on the transformation of binaural cues into stable spatial representations, yet the neural mechanisms supporting this process remain incompletely understood. Mild stroke provides a unique opportunity to study the vulnerability of auditory spatial processing within distributed neural networks. We investigated azimuthal sound localization in chronic-phase survivors of mild stroke without hearing aid use using broadband, low-frequency, and high-frequency noise and compared it against a headphone-based lateralization task. Most patients exhibited localization acc

Sound source localization patterns and bilateral cochlear implants: Age at onset of deafness effects.

The ability to determine a sound's location is critical in everyday life. However, sound source localization is severely compromised for patients with hearing loss who receive bilateral cochlear implants (BiCIs). Several patient factors relate to poorer performance in listeners with BiCIs, associated with auditory deprivation, experience, and age. Critically, characteristic errors are made by patients with BiCIs (e.g., medial responses at lateral target locations), and the relationship between patient factors and the type of errors made by patients has seldom been investigated across individua

Towards a Consensus on an ICF-Based Classification System for Horizontal Sound-Source Localization.

The study aimed to develop a consensus classification system for the reporting of sound localization testing results, especially in the field of cochlear implantation. Against the background of an overview of the wide variations present in localization testing procedures and reporting metrics, a novel classification system was proposed to report localization errors according to the widely accepted International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. The obtained HEARRING_LOC_ICF scale includes the ICF graded scale: 0 (no impairment), 1 (mild impairment), 2 (moder

Training sound localization in normal hearing listeners with and without a unilateral ear plug.

Surprisingly little is known about the ability of adult human listeners to learn to localize sounds in the free field. In this study, we presented broadband noise bursts at 24 equally spaced locations in a 360° horizontal plane in both normal-hearing conditions and when listeners were fitted with a unilateral earplug. Localization improvement was found over the initial four training sessions, prior to plug insertion which produced an immediate and profound impairment in localization, particularly on the side of the plug. Subsequent training with the plug in place over the next 5 days showed co

Retrograde GABA signaling adjusts sound localization by balancing excitation and inhibition in the brainstem.

Central processing of acoustic cues is critically dependent on the balance between excitation and inhibition. This balance is particularly important for auditory neurons in the lateral superior olive, because these compare excitatory inputs from one ear and inhibitory inputs from the other ear to compute sound source location. By applying GABA(B) receptor antagonists during sound stimulation in vivo, it was revealed that these neurons adjust their binaural sensitivity through GABA(B) receptors. Using an in vitro approach, we then demonstrate that these neurons release GABA during spiking activ

[Hearing loss, disorders of sound localization with the preservation ofsmell and taste in diabetics].

Diabetes is often complicated by serious medical conditions which could be related to the development of auditory system and cranial nerves lesions, disorder of sound localisation and decreased olfactory and taste ability. Cranial nerve palsies in diabetes are considered as an integral part of the main disease. Twenty nine children with diabetes and non-diabetics control group, without a history of exposure to noise, ototoxic drugs, or ear disease aged 4-19 years old were examined. Hearing impairment may be present in children with disease duration above 3-5 years and in children with other co

DSF-Net: Dual-strategy fusion for efficient audio-visual sound event localization and detection.

Audio-visual sound event localization and detection (AVSELD) seeks to identify and locate sound-emitting objects by leveraging both audio and visual data. Current methods primarily rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), whose constrained receptive fields limit their ability to capture broader contextual information. Although Transformer-based architectures exhibit considerable proficiency in capturing global contextual information, their efficacy is impeded by the quadratic computational complexity associated with processing long-range dependencies. This poses a significant bottleneck,

Cortical reorganization and listening effort in sound localization with left- vs. right-sided deafness.

Sound source localization is a fundamental ability for living organisms and essential for human daily functioning. Sound localization heavily relies on binaural auditory input. Unilateral auditory impairment not only disrupts sound localization but also alters cortical activation patterns. However, current understanding of these adaptive cortical changes remains limited, with a lack of multidimensional and systematic research. Here, we employed multimodal neuroimaging-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and pupillometry-to investigate the physiological mechanisms of sound localizatio

The Effect of Hearing Aids on Sound Localization in Mild Unilateral Conductive Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Binaural hearing is of utmost importance for communicating in noisy surroundings and localizing the direction of sound. Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) affects the quality of life in both childhood and adulthood, speech development, and academic achievements. Sound amplification using air-conducting hearing aids (HAs) is a common option for hearing rehabilitation of UHL. The processing time of digital HAs can significantly delay the acoustic stimulation in 3 to 10 milliseconds, which is far longer than the maximal natural interaural time difference (ITD) of 750 microseconds. This can

Amplification of interaural level differences improves sound localization in acoustic simulations of bimodal hearing.

Users of a cochlear implant and contralateral hearing aid are sensitive to interaural level differences (ILDs). However, when using their clinical devices, most of these subjects cannot use ILD cues for localization in the horizontal plane. This is partly due to a lack of high-frequency residual hearing in the acoustically stimulated ear. Using acoustic simulations of a cochlear implant and hearing loss, it is shown that localization performance can be improved by up to 14 degrees rms error relative to 48 degrees rms error for broadband noise by artificially introducing ILD cues in the low fre

Characteristics of sound localization in children with unilateral microtia and atresia and predictors of localization improvement when using a bone conduction device.

This study aimed to determine the characteristics of sound localization in children with unilateral microtia and atresia (UMA) and the influence of a non-surgical bone conduction device (BCD). Hearing benefits were evaluated by the word recognition score (WRS), speech reception threshold, the international outcome inventory for hearing aids (IOI-HA), and the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Test for Parent (SSQ-P). Sound localization was measured using broadband noise stimuli randomly played from seven loudspeakers at different stimulus levels [65, 70, and 75 dB sound pressure levels

Infants' monaural localization of sounds: effects of unilateral ear infection.

The aim in this study was to examine the impact of unilateral ear infection (i.e., otitis media with effusion) on infants' localization of sounds in the horizontal place. Twenty eight infants 6 to 18 months of age were tested at the time of an ear infection, as well as 2 weeks later. Sound localization was measured using a two-alternative forced-choice procedure to examine infants' abilities to discriminate a sound shift of 8 degrees, 12 degrees, 16 degrees, and 20 degrees off midline and along the horizontal axis, either ipsilateral or contralateral to the infected ear. A head and/or eye move

Acoustic Vector Sensor-Based UAV Sound Source Localization via Covariance Enhancement and Confidence Guidance Tracking.

Unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) intrusions in sensitive areas such as airports have made accurate UAV detection and localization a pressing need. Acoustic sensing is passive and weather-independent, but conventional microphone arrays require many elements and a large aperture. This paper proposes an acoustic vector sensor (AVS)-based method, termed Covariance Enhancement and Confidence-guided Tracking for 3D Acoustic Localization (CECT-3DAL). A single AVS measures the sound pressure and three-axis particle velocity at one point. Adaptive diagonal loading improves the robustness of t
