Public health importance of rodents in South America.

Indigenous South American rodents are abundant, varied, and adaptable, and occupy most of the available natural habitats. Knowledge of their taxonomy and biology is generally superficial. Near human habitations the introduced Rattus and Mus are common and their contacts with man are often close. Cities in South America are expanding to keep pace with increases in the human population and hitherto virgin land is being settled or cleared for food production. Thus domestic rodents are brought into contact with indigenous species and the inevitable exchange of parasites may then produce unpredicta

Indications for the Use of TMJ Prostheses in South America.

Since the 1960s, various surgical procedures have been developed to treat the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease, including stock or customized prostheses for severe TMJ diseases. Understanding the appropriate indications and timing for joint replacement is crucial for evaluating the prognosis of the treatment. This study sought to identify the indications for joint replacement surgery in three countries in Latin America and to determine characteristics associated with its surgical planning. The study was conducted by interviewing surgeons who performed surgery on patients using customized

Cystic echinococcosis in South America: a call for action.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) or hydatidosis, a parasitic zoonosis caused by a cestode of the family Taeniidae, species Echinococcus granulosus, is endemic in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. This report presents CE figures for these five countries in 2009 - 2014 and proposes indicators to measure national control programs. Nearly 5 000 new CE cases were diagnosed annually in the five countries during the study period. The average case fatality rate was 2.9%, which suggests that CE led to approximately 880 deaths in these countries during the 6-year period. CE cases that requ

Review on meat consumption and cancer in South America.

Consumption of red meat and its heterocyclic amines (HCA) content has been associated with an increased risk for colorectal cancer and, with less consistency, with stomach, oesophagus, pancreas, breast, prostate and kidney cancers. Uruguay and Argentina's rates for breast and colon cancer are among the highest in the world. The main type of meat consumed in these countries is beef, of which consumption rank first and second, respectively in the world, with about 60 kg per year per capita. Beef is cut in different ways following the customs of different countries and regions. The predominant co

Epidemiology of babesiosis and anaplasmosis in South and Central America.

Babesiosis (Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale) affect native cattle from Uruguay and northern Argentina to Guatemala. The distribution of Babesia follows the dissemination of the tick vector. Seroepidemiological studies showed that enzootic instability exist in herds in several areas of the region. However, clinical cases occurred less frequently than expected. The babesial tick infection rate is related to the vector abundance which in turn is regulated by climate. Bos indicus cattle, because of tick resistance, are less likely to be infected by the vec

The genomic identity of early smallpox in South America.

Smallpox was a major driver of population collapse in the Americas after European contact, yet the genetic identity of the causal strains remains unknown. Here, we report the first ancient smallpox genomes in the Americas, dating to approximately 1492-1631 common era (CE), recovered from two Inca-Colonial individuals in northern Chile. These genomes form a now-extinct lineage that diverged around 1296 CE, after the splitting of early medieval European strains but before the emergence of modern variola lineages, providing direct molecular evidence for smallpox introduction through European colo

Reprint of: A review on Trichinella infection in South America.

Trichinella spp. causes human trichinellosis by means of the consumption of raw or inadequately treated meat from domestic or game animals. In the Americas, as well as in other continents, Trichinella infection is a health issue for humans and has a negative impact on the pork meat market, generated by people's fear of becoming infected with the parasite. The distribution of human cases and the sources of this disease in humans and animals were analysed in this report, which summarizes the information available regarding Trichinella infection in animals and humans in South America. Within Sout

A summary of Blastocystis subtypes in North and South America.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a stramenopile of worldwide significance due to its capacity to colonize several hosts. Based on its high level of genetic diversity, Blastocystis is classified into global ribosomal subtypes (STs). The aim of this study was to conduct a summary of Blastocystis STs and depict their distribution throughout North and South America; we did this by assembling maps and identifying its most common 18S alleles based on diverse studies that had been reported all over the continent and whose Blastocystis-positive samples were obtained from numerous hosts. RESULTS: Thirty-ni

Burden of gallbladder cancer in Central and South America.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is a rare neoplasm yet it is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract and its prognosis is poor. Incidence of GBC is high in some areas of Central and South America and the Caribbean. We described the current burden of GBC in Central and South America (CSA). METHODS: We obtained GBC incidence data from 48 population-based cancer registries in 13 countries in CSA, and national level cancer death data from the WHO mortality data base for 18 countries. We estimated World population age-standardized incidence and mortality rates per 100,

Epidemiology of trichinellosis in Mexico, Central and South America.

Trichinella species are widely distributed throughout the world and are found in a large number of carnivorous animals, humans and incidental hosts. The data presented in this review show that Trichinella infection has been reported in both humans and animals in Mexico, Argentina and Chile since the end of the 19th century, and more recently in Bolivia. This parasitic infection is still a public health problem in countries such as Argentina and Chile. Although efforts have focused on the control and prevention of trichinellosis in these countries, there were still human cases and outbreaks of

Geographic distribution of human Blastocystis subtypes in South America.

Blastocystis is a cosmopolitan enteric protist colonizing probably more than 1 billion people. This protozoan exhibits genetic diversity and is subdivided into subtypes (STs). The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of Blastocystis STs in symptomatic and asymptomatic human samples from different countries of South America. A total of 346 fecal samples were genotyped by SSU rDNA showing ST1 (28.3%), ST2 (22.2%), ST3 (36.7%), ST4 (2%), ST5 (2.3%), ST6 (2%), ST7 (2.3%), ST8 (0.6%), ST12 (0.9%) and a novel ST (2.7%). These findings update the epidemiology of Blastocystis in South A

Clinical epidemiology of acute hepatitis C in South America.

There is scarce data pertaining to acute hepatitis C (aHC) infection in South America. We aimed to describe clinical characteristics and evolution of aHC in a South American cohort. A retrospective survey was conducted at 13 hepatology units. All patients ≥16 years old with aHC diagnosis were included. Demographic, clinical and outcome information were registered in a standardized ad hoc questionnaire. Sixty-four patients were included. The majority were middle-aged (median age: 46 years) and female (65.6%); most of them were symptomatic at diagnosis (79.6%). HCV-1 was the most prevalent genot

Marsupial morphology of reproduction: South America opossum male model.

This study aims to describe the morphology of Didelphis sp. male genital organs (penis, testes, epididymis, ductus deferens, prostate, and bulbourethral gland). Ten male animals were used, eight for macroscopic and light microscopy analysis, and two for scanning electron microscopy. The testes and epididymis showed similarity to other eutherian mammals. The bifid penis showed the urethra ending in the medial region where the bifurcation begins, occurring in each segment extension of the urethral groove until the beginning of the glans. Histologically, the penis consists of a cavernous and spon

Prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in South America.

In South American countries, the class A extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) so far recognised belong to the CTX-M, Pseudomonas Extended Resistance (PER), SHV and TEM families. ESBL rates in South America are among the highest in the world, probably due to multiple factors. SHV- and TEM-type ESBLs have been frequently encountered, but CTX-M is endemic and widely dominant. PER-type ESBLs seem to be restricted to the southern 'cone' of South America. Community-acquired ESBLs are starting to appear.

[Present status of zoonotic hemorrhagic fevers of South America].

Since 1958, the geographical distribution of Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF) has especially extended non only into the province of Buenos Aires but also towards the provinces of Santa Fe and Cordoba, leading to an estimated population at risk of about 1.2 M inhabitants. Recent epidemiological field studies has confirmed the major role of Calomys musculinus and C. laucha rodents in both transmission to man and conservation of Junin virus in nature. However, the human infection may result essentially from contacts with infected C. musculinus. Clinical condition of patients with AHF was greatly
