The Extent, Range, and Nature of Quantitative Nutrition Research Engaging with Intersectional Inequalities: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Addressing malnutrition for all requires understanding inequalities in nutrition outcomes and how they intersect. Intersectionality is increasingly used as a theoretical tool for understanding how social characteristics intersect to shape inequalities in health outcomes. However, little is known about the extent, range, and nature of quantitative nutrition research engaging with intersectional inequalities. This systematic scoping review aimed to address this gap. Between 15 May 2021 and 15 May 2022, we searched 8 databases. Studies eligible for inclusion used any quantitative research methodo

Measles resurgence in southern Africa: challenges to measles elimination.

INTRODUCTION: In seven southern African countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe), following implementation of a measles mortality reduction strategy starting in 1996, the number of annually reported measles cases decreased sharply to less than one per million population during 2006-2008. However, during 2009-2010, large outbreaks occurred in these countries. In 2011, a goal for measles elimination by 2020 was set in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region (AFR). We reviewed the implementation of the measles control strategy and measles epi

Factors Associated With Risk Stratification and Overall Survival of Black South African Men With Non-Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates significantly poorer overall survival for men with metastatic prostate cancer in resource-limited settings than in high-income countries. However, there is less understanding of the overall survival of non-metastatic disease, which could inform early treatment strategies. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively examine factors associated with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) risk stratification and overall survival in 741 Black South African men with non-metastatic prostate cancer, some of whom also had co-morbidities (≥ 2 other chronic conditions).

Characterization of vaginal lactobacilli from South African women toward the development of a biotherapeutic to optimize the vaginal microbiome.

HIV remains among the world's most serious healthcare challenges, with adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa at particularly high risk of infection. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a key risk factor for HIV acquisition; however, current treatment strategies are limited. Optimal vaginal lactobacilli protect against BV and HIV, largely through immunoregulatory and antimicrobial activities mediated in part by lactic acid. Toward the development of a live biotherapeutic for African women, we sampled 181 isolates of vaginal lactobacilli from 25 BV-negative South African women. Fifty is

Population variation and macromorphoscopic traits in a sample of South African subadults.

Skeletal analyses of subadults are lacking reliable methods to estimate biological parameters, such as population affinity. In adults, macromorphoscopic (MMS) traits capture nonmetric cranial variation and assist in assessing population affinity, but its application on subadults remains underexplored in South Africa. This study evaluated the use of MMS traits to assess population affinity in a sample of South African subadults. The sample comprised of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanned crania of subadults between 3 and 16 years, including black, white, coloured and indian South Afric

Biology and genetics of oculocutaneous albinism and vitiligo - common pigmentation disorders in southern Africa.

Pigmentation disorders span the genetic spectrum from single-gene autosomal recessive disorders such as oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), the autosomal dominant disorder piebaldism to X-linked ocular albinism and multifactorial vitiligo. OCA connotes a group of disorders that result in hypopigmented skin due to decreased melanin production in melanocytes and loss of visual acuity. There are four non-syndromic forms, OCA1-4, which are classified based on the gene that is mutated (tyrosinase, OCA2, tyrosinase-related protein 1 and SLC45A2, respectively). Despite the fact that multiple genes account

Prevalence of elephantiasis, an overlooked disease in Southern Africa: a comprehensive review.

Elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis (LF), is a debilitating condition characterized by the thickening of the skin and muscles, primarily affecting the limbs, genitalia, and female breasts. Lymphatic filariasis is a major global health concern, affecting approximately 120 million people worldwide and having a significant impact on people's quality of life, mobility, and socio-economic status. Although LF is endemic in many parts of the world, including Africa, it is a neglected issue in Southern Africa, with little information available. According to the World Health Organisation,

Influence of vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral content, bone turnover markers, and fracture risk in South African schoolchildren: multicenter double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial (ViDiKids).

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine the influence of vitamin D on BMC and fracture risk in children of Black African ancestry are lacking. We conducted a sub-study (n = 450) nested within a phase 3 RCT of weekly oral supplementation with 10 000 IU vitamin D3 vs placebo for 3 yr in HIV-uninfected Cape Town schoolchildren aged 6-11 yr. Outcomes were BMC at the whole body less head (WBLH) and LS and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3), PTH, alkaline phosphatase, C-terminal telopeptide, and PINP. Incidence of fractures was a secondary outcome of the main trial (n = 1682). At baselin

The prevalence of unclosed transverse foramina in the cervical spine of a South African population sample.

PURPOSE: Unclosed transverse foramina (UTF) represent anatomical variations of the cervical vertebrae that may influence vertebral artery, vein or sympathetic nerves, particularly at the level of the atlas (C1). This study aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of UTF in a South African skeletal population and to evaluate associations with age, biological sex, and population affinity. METHODS: A macroscopic osteological assessment of cervical vertebrae from 800 individuals was performed using a South African skeletal repository. UTF were identified based on incomplete osseous closu

Exploratory Cohort Study of Depressive Symptoms in South Africans with HIV-1 Subtype C: Associations with Kynurenine Pathway Metabolites and Inflammatory Markers.

Background: Depression is common in people living with HIV and may involve immune–metabolic dysregulation. Altered tryptophan (Trp) metabolism via the kynurenine (Kyn) pathway, particularly quinolinic acid (QUIN), has been linked to neuroinflammation and depression, yet data from South Africans with HIV-1 subtype C are limited. Methods: In this exploratory cohort, treatment-naïve adults with HIV were assessed at baseline in 2010 (n = 69) and followed up in 2015 (n = 40). Targeted LC-MS/MS quantified Trp–Kyn metabolites (Trp, Kyn, KA, QUIN) and ELISAs measured immune markers (suPAR, IL-6, hsCRP

Population-based study of pharmacogenetics and pharmacokinetics in Southern African patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (PoPG): a protocol for the Namibian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is an urgent public health challenge in Namibia, with profound socioeconomic consequences. The high burden of both tuberculosis and HIV complicates treatment and underscores the need for optimised drug therapies. Precision medicine, which leverages patient-specific genetic and molecular information, offers promise for improving MDR-TB outcomes. However, its effective application relies on population-specific data, particularly understanding how individuals metabolise tuberculosis drugs and how genetic diversity drives variability in treatme

Genomic Diversity of Vaginal Lactobacillus crispatus Prophages from South African Women.

Lactobacillus crispatus is widely associated with optimal sexual and reproductive health outcomes. While L. crispatus genomes commonly harbor prophages, little is known about their genomic diversity and potential inducibility by clinically relevant compounds. We induced and characterized four bacteriophages from four L. crispatus strains isolated from vaginal secretions of South African adolescents. Sequenced viral DNA from induced phages was assembled, and their respective genomes were annotated and compared to bacteriophage reference genomes. All the phage genomes range in size from 42.9 to

Burden of congenital inguinal hernia and hydrocele in northern and southern Nigeria: an opportunity for awareness creation.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria, with a population of >150 million people in which half of the population are children encounters challenges in paediatric surgery practice in rural areas. There are paediatric surgeons in Nigeria, but majority practice in tertiary health facilities in cities. The poor rural dwellers have little or no access to such highly trained specialists. Hence, children with congenital and acquired paediatric surgical pathologies including anterior abdominal wall defects not only grow up with these diseases to adulthood, they are also exposed to various health hazards posed by unquali

Cultural scripts for multiple and concurrent partnerships in southern Africa: why HIV prevention needs anthropology.

BACKGROUND: Multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships have been identified as southern Africa's key behavioural driver of HIV, resulting in calls to make partner reduction programming central to an intensified HIV prevention focus. Various efforts are currently being made in the region in response to this call. Such efforts will likely have as limited success as past prevention efforts if the cultural milieu in which sexual partnering practices are located and reproduced remains poorly understood, unaccounted for, and unaddressed in prevention programming. METHODS: Focussed ethnographic dis

Chikungunya epidemic: an Indian perspective.

Chikungunya, caused by the chikungunya virus, recently emerged as an important public health problem in the Indian Ocean Islands and India. In 2006, an estimated 1.38 million people across southern and central India developed symptomatic disease. The incidence of the disease may have been higher but may have been underreported due to lack of accurate reporting. First isolated in Tanzania in 1953, the chikungunya virus belongs to the family Togaviridae (single-stranded RNA alphaviruses) and has 3 distinct genotypes: East African, West African and Asian. Previous outbreaks in India (1963 and 197

Vector competence of Simulium exiguum for Onchocerca volvulus: implications for the epidemiology of onchocerciasis.

In the transmission of human onchocerciasis, competence of the black fly vector influences intensity of transmission by regulating how many infective-stage larvae are produced. The disease is intensifying in Ecuador where Simulium exiguum is a highly efficient limitation-type vector comparable with African forest species in terms of the percentage of flies developing infective-stage larvae and the numbers of larvae per infected fly. In contrast, the endemic foci in Guatemala and southern Mexico have remained stable and closely circumscribed around larval development sites for S. ochraceum, a v

A Situational Mapping Overview of Training Programmes for Community-Based Rehabilitation Workers in Southern Africa: Strategies for Strengthening Accessible Rural Rehabilitation Practice.

In 2018, the United Nations global report showed that people with disabilities, who make up 15% of the worlds' population, have poorer health and rehabilitation access (SDG 3). Without improving the needed person-centered health and rehabilitation services at household level, SDG 3 cannot be achieved. This includes addressing human resource shortages through training multi-skilled community based rehabilitation workers (CRWs) to build rural workforce capacity and enhance the lives of people with disabilities, particularly in LMICs where the need is higher but resources are lower. However, to d
