Ground-based studies with Super-Dwarf wheat in preparation for space flight.

Several experiments were carried out to test responses of a Super-Dwarf cultivar of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to various environmental parameters that were anticipated to be present in our attempts to grow the wheat in a small growth chamber on the Russian Space Station, Mir, or that proved to be present in a 1995 trial space experiment. Under low photosynthetic photon flux (40-400 micromoles m-2 s-1 PPF), development (e.g. anthesis) was retarded, but heads (often sterile) always formed, even if light was so low that plants died before the heads could mature. Longer photoperiods promoted fl

U.S. manned space flight: the first twenty years, a biomedical status report.

In the last 20 years, the biomedical problems facing man in space have been brought into sharper focus. Space motion sickness is presently our most serious problem. Its etiology remains obscure, but the "sensory conflict" theory appears most plausible. No valid predictive tests of susceptibility exist and presently we must rely on medication for prevention or mitigation of symptoms. Adaptation/biofeedback techniques may prove useful. Cardiovascular "deconditioning" may be effectively attenuated by use of anti-g suits or plasma expanding techniques. Recent bedrest simulation studies would seem

Neurovestibular considerations for sub-orbital space flight: A framework for future investigation.

Commercial sub-orbital operators will soon offer the excitement of traveling to space to thousands of people. Based on previous experience in space flight and parabolic flight, sensorimotor disruptions in eye movements, postural stability, and motor coordination are likely in these travelers. Here we propose a framework for developing strategies to overcome these sensorimotor disruptions. We delineate how approaches should differ from those applied to orbital flight and between sub-orbital passengers and pilots based on differing frequency of flights and mission objectives. Sensorimotor adapta

The effects of space flight during gestation on rat uterine smooth muscle.

Pregnant rats were flown on a NASA space shuttle during days 11-20 of gestation and the effects of pregnancy maintenance and uterine myometrial smooth muscle were evaluated. There was no effect of space flight on fetal mass in rats examined at recovery on day 20 of gestation (G-20). Rats allowed to go to term delivered vaginally at days 22-23, but space flight significantly decreased pup mass at birth. Space flight did not alter myometrial smooth muscle volume at G-20 and postpartum when compared to flight delayed synchronous controls, but flight animals showed a 37% decrease in myometrial smo

Perspective on the consequences of short- and long-duration space flight on human physiology.

During the past three decades, humans have made significant progress in accomplishing their aspirations for exploring the Moon and the planets. It is now appreciated that humans undergo a remarkable number of physiologic adaptations in microgravity that affect most physiologic systems. Space motion sickness was one of the first adaptations that humans experienced in microgravity. However, it is self-limiting and, most of the time, is effectively treated pharmacologically. Of particular concern is that, in microgravity, there is marked wasting of the skeletal musculature and skeleton that appea

Chromosome aberration dosimetry in cosmonauts after single or multiple space flights.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cosmic radiation is one of the main hazards for manned space exploration. Uncertainty in radiation risk estimates for crews of long-term missions are very high, and direct biological measurements are necessary. We measured chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes from 33 cosmonauts involved in space missions during the past 11 years. METHODS: Blood lymphocytes from the cosmonauts were stimulated to grow in vitro and were harvested at their first mitosis. Slides were either stained with Giemsa stain for dicentrics analysis, or painted with whole-chromosome D

Posture, locomotion, spatial orientation, and motion sickness as a function of space flight.

This article summarizes a variety of newly published findings obtained by the Neuroscience Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and attempts to place this work within a historical framework of previous results on posture, locomotion, motion sickness, and perceptual responses that have been observed in conjunction with space flight. In this context, we have taken the view that correct transduction and integration of signals from all sensory systems is essential to maintaining stable vision, postural and locomotor control, and eye-hand coordination as components of spatial orientation. The plastici

Fluid volume control during short-term space flight and implications for human performance.

Space flight exerts substantial effects on fluid volume control in humans. Cardiac distension occurs during the first 1-2 days of space flight relative to supine and especially upright 1g conditions. Plasma volume contraction occurs quickly in microgravity, probably as a result of transcapillary fluid filtration into upper-body interstitial spaces. No natriuresis or diuresis has been observed in microgravity, such that diuresis cannot explain microgravity-induced hypovolemia. Reduction of fluid intake occurs irrespective of space motion sickness and leads to hypovolemia. The fourfold elevation

Prediction of space motion sickness susceptibility by disconjugate eye torsion in parabolic flight.

The hypothesis of asymmetric otolith function asserts that physiological or anatomical differences in the two sides of the bilateral gravity-sensing otolith apparatus of the inner ear may be well compensated on Earth, but when exposed to novel gravitational states, the prior compensatory stratagems may be ineffective, leading to unstable vestibular responses and causing the phenomenon of space motion sickness. To investigate this hypothesis, spontaneous eye torsion, a reflex governed by the otolith organs, was examined in the upright position during the hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flig

Functional activities essential for space exploration performed in partial gravity during parabolic flight.

Test subjects were assessed in a partial gravity environment during parabolic flight while they performed mission-critical activities that challenged their balance and locomotion. These functional activities included rising from a seated position and walking, jumping down, recovering from falls, and maintaining an upright stance. Twelve volunteers were tested during 10 parabolas that produced 0.25×g, 0.5×g, or 0.75×g, and at 1×g during level flight intervals between parabolas. Additionally, 14 other subjects were tested using identical procedures in a 1×g laboratory setting. Partial gravity al

Exercise as a countermeasure for latent viral reactivation during long duration space flight.

Latent viral reactivation is a commonly reported manifestation of immune system dysregulation during spaceflight. As physical fitness and exercise training have been shown to benefit multiple arms of the immune system, we hypothesized that higher levels of preflight physical fitness and/or maintaining fitness during a mission would protect astronauts from latent viral reactivation. Standardized tests of maximal strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) were performed in 22 international space station (ISS) crewmembers before and after a ~6-month mission. [BEHAVIORAL AND FUNCTIONAL VESTIBULAR DISTURBANCES AFTER SPACE FLIGHT. 2. FISHES, AMPHIBIANS AND BIRDS].

The review contains data on functional shifts in fishes, amphibians and birds caused by changes in the otolith system operation after stay under weightlessness conditions. These data are of theoretical and practical significance and are important to resolve some fundamental problems of vestibulogy. The analysis of the results of space experiments has shown that weightlessness conditions do not exert a substantial impact on formation and functional state of the otolith system in embryonic fishes, amphibians and birds developed during space flight. Weightlessness conditions do pot inhibit embryo

Gene expression in rat vestibular and reticular structures during and after space flight.

Space flight produces profound changes of neuronal activity in the mammalian vestibular and reticular systems, affecting postural and motor functions. These changes are compensated over time by plastic alterations in the brain. Immediate early genes (IEGs) are useful indicators of both activity changes and neuronal plasticity. We studied the expression of two IEG protein products [Fos and Fos-related antigens (FRAs)] with different cell persistence times (hours and days, respectively) to identify brainstem vestibular and reticular structures involved in adaptation to microgravity and readaptat

[Chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes of cosmonauts after long-term space flight].

The incidence and the types of chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes of the peripheral blood in culture in vivo were studied in a cosmonaut following 14-day space flight (SF) and in three cosmonauts on completion of 177- and 194-day SF. After prolonged SF each cosmonaut displayed an increase in the number of aberrant cells and the incidence of chromosome damages. The rise in the number of aberrant cells was 2-3-fold comparing with the preflight level and 3-8-fold comparing with the number of aberrant mitoses in young subjects. Emergence of dicentric and centric rings was characteristic for two

[Cytogenetic studies of blood lymphocytes of cosmonauts after long-ter, space flights].

An analysis was performed of unstable chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood of 36 cosmonauts after long-term space missions on "Mir" orbital station. 25 cosmonauts were examined before their flights to score spontaneous yields of cytogenetical damage. In all cases the doses absorbed by crews during space flights did not exceed permissible levels of irradiation, adopted for cosmonauts. The frequencies of chromosomal-type aberrations after space missions were found to increase significantly compared to the pre-flight levels. The yields of dicentrics and centric rings on the average were as

Study of the Expression of Integrins in Smooth Myocytes of the Gastrointestinal Organs After Space Flight.

Spaceflight has crucial effects on living organisms, primarily due to weightlessness, which causes essential morphofunctional changes in the tissues of almost all body systems. Smooth muscle tissue is one of the main system-forming components of the gastrointestinal tract, which makes its study particularly relevant to space gastroenterology. Integrins are cell adhesion receptors expressed in practically all cell types, including smooth muscle cells. By mediating interactions with the extracellular matrix and intercellular signaling, smooth muscle cell integrins actively participate in adaptat

Physiological Changes in the Cardiovascular System During Space Flight - Current Countermeasures and Future Vision.

BACKGROUND: With the recent acceleration of manned space exploration, health care in space has become an important issue. Cardiovascular problems, mainly caused by the microgravity environment in space, include decreased red blood cell volume, myocardial atrophy and aerobic capacity, and reduced orthostatic tolerance after return. However, complete physiological countermeasures have not been established and more research is needed. METHODS AND RESULTS: A search on PubMed was conducted for English-language articles on cardiovascular changes in space and their countermeasures and post return re

Flight test results for microgravity active vibration isolation system on-board Chinese Space Station.

The Fluid Physics Research Rack (FPR) is a research platform employed on-board the Chinese Space Station for conducting microgravity fluid physics experiments. The research platform includes the Microgravity Active Vibration Isolation System (MAVIS) for isolating the FPR from disturbances arising from the space station itself. The MAVIS is a structural platform consisting of a stator and floater that are monitored and controlled with non-contact electromagnetic actuators, high-precision accelerometers, and displacement transducers. The stator is fixed to the FPR, while the floater serves as a
