Detection of spatial, temporal and space-time Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Typhimurium clusters in Ontario in 2015, and comparisons to known outbreaks.

PURPOSE: Salmonellosis is one of several reportable diseases in Ontario (ON). Two or more cases of the same serotype that are linked to a common exposure or related to one another in time and/or space are considered a potential outbreak. While laboratory data can help to determine the molecular relatedness of cases, results may take up to several weeks. This study aimed to assess the utility of the retrospective spatial scan statistic in detecting clusters of Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Typhimurium cases using data from ON in 2015. Identified clusters were validated by laboratory data

Fine scale Spatial-temporal cluster analysis for the infection risk of Schistosomiasis japonica using space-time scan statistics.

BACKGROUND: Marching towards the elimination of schistosomiasis in China, both the incidence and prevalence have witnessed profound decline over the past decades, with the strategy shifting from morbidity control to transmission control. The current challenge is to find out hotspots of transmission risk for precise targeted control in low-prevalence areas. This study assessed the risk at the village level, using the spatial and temporal characteristics of Schistosomiasis japonica in Anhui province from 2006 to 2012. METHOD: The comprehensive database was generated from annual surveillance dat

Outbreaks of syphilis among men who have sex with men attending STI clinics between 2007 and 2015 in the Netherlands: a space-time clustering study.

OBJECTIVES: Infectious syphilis (syphilis) is diagnosed predominantly among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Netherlands and is a strong indicator for sexual risk behaviour. Therefore, an increase in syphilis can be an early indicator of resurgence of other STIs, including HIV. National and worldwide outbreaks of syphilis, as well as potential changes in sexual networks were reason to explore syphilis trends and clusters in more depth. METHODS: National STI/HIV surveillance data were used, containing epidemiological, behavioural and clinical data from STI clinics. We examined syphilis p

Clustering of equine grass sickness cases in the United Kingdom: a study considering the effect of position-dependent reporting on the space-time K-function.

Equine grass sickness (EGS) is a largely fatal, pasture-associated dysautonomia. Although the aetiology of this disease is unknown, there is increasing evidence that Clostridium botulinum type C plays an important role in this condition. The disease is widespread in the United Kingdom, with the highest incidence believed to occur in Scotland. EGS also shows strong seasonal variation (most cases are reported between April and July). Data from histologically confirmed cases of EGS from England and Wales in 1999 and 2000 were collected from UK veterinary diagnostic centres. The data did not repre

Risk clusters of Schistosoma mansoni infection in an endemic state of Brazil: space-time modelling and association with socio-economic and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: We analysed the spatial distribution and the socio-economic and environmental factors (SEFs) associated with Schistosoma mansoni infection in the state of Alagoas, an important tourist area in northeastern Brazil. METHODS: We conducted an ecological time-series study (2007-2016) on schistosomiasis cases and SEFs. We evaluated the temporal trends of schistosomiasis cases (annual percentage change [APC]) and their correlation with SEFs. Spatial analysis maps were built using QGIS and TerraView software. RESULTS: We observed that 4.9% of the municipalities had a high prevalence of S

Epidemiology of listeriosis in a region in central Italy from 2010 to 2019: Estimating the real incidence and space-time analysis for detecting cluster of cases.

BACKGROUND: Contamination and transmission of different Listeria monocytogenes strains along food chain are a serious threat to public health and food safety. Understanding the distribution of diseases in time and space-time is fundamental in the epidemiological study and in preventive medicine programs. The aim of this study is to estimate listeriosis incidence along 10-years period and to perform space-time cluster analysis of listeriosis cases in Marche Region, Italy. METHODS: The number of observed listeriosis cases/year was derived from regional data of surveillance of notifiable disease

Space-time cluster analysis of sea lice infestation (Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on wild juvenile Pacific salmon in the Broughton Archipelago of Canada.

Sea lice infestation levels on wild chum and pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago region are known to vary spatially and temporally; however, the locations of areas associated with a high infestation level had not been investigated yet. In the present study, the multivariate spatial scan statistic based on a Poisson model was used to assess spatial clustering of elevated sea lice (Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation levels on wild chum and pink salmon sampled between March and July of 2004 to 2012 in the Broughton Archipelago and Knight Inlet regions of British Columb

Use of Injection Drugs and Any Form of Methamphetamine in the Portland, OR Metro Area as a Driver of an HIV Time-Space Cluster: Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties, 2018-2020.

We describe the response to detection of a time-space cluster of new HIV infection in the Portland, OR metro area among people who inject drugs (PWID) and/or people who use any form of methamphetamine. This time-space cluster took place in a region with a syndemic of homelessness and drug use. The investigation included new HIV diagnoses in 2018, 2019, and 2020 in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties. Public health response included activating incident command, development and implementation of an enhanced interview tool, outreach testing, and stakeholder engagement. We identified 396

Four million COVID-19 cases in four European cross-border regions reveal minimal cross-border transmission effect on domestic burden: space-time cluster analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictions of cross-border mobility were used during the COVID-19 pandemic to slow down transmission between countries. Such restrictions came with significant societal costs, and their effect on in-country burdens of COVID-19 has been questioned. Our study aims to assess whether cross-border transmission contributed significantly to in-country burdens of COVID-19 in four large Euroregions shared by the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. METHOD: Geographical information systems (GIS) and Besag-York-Mollie (BYM) models were used to visualize the spatial distribution of COVID-19 c

Studies on the clustering of multiple sclerosis in Finland.

The epidemiological investigation of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Finland revealed a prevalence rate of 40.3 per 100.000 inhabitants. The geographic distribution of MS was uneven in the country. MS seemed to occur more often in the western and southwestern parts of the country, where the prevalences varied between 51.7 and 62.1 This phenomenon became even more pronounced when the distribution of the disease was investigated in small geographic units. Optic neuritis showed a geographic distribution similar to that of MS, with clustering in the same parts of the country and even in the same narrow

Insignificant seasonal and geographical variation in incidence of biliary atresia in Japan: a regional survey of over 20 years.

PURPOSE: Biliary atresia (BA) is the leading cause of obstructive jaundice in the newborn and the major indication for liver transplantation in Japan. Viral infection has been implicated in its etiology because of seasonality and space clustering. However, this has been controversial among whites. The present study investigates space-time clustering of the incidence of BA in Japan. METHODS: Birth prevalence rates of BA were analyzed in infants born in Hyogo prefecture between 1985 and 2004 to assess time clustering among 3 seasons. The birth prevalence rates were also analyzed for space clust

Absence of epidemicity of severe leptospirosis in Barbados.

The possibility of micro-epidemics of severe leptospirosis occurring on the island of Barbados was investigated by examining the space-time clustering of the disease in 212 laboratory-confirmed cases admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bridgetown, over a 7-year period. A series of 109 patients with symptoms compatible with leptospirosis but shown to be otherwise by laboratory examination were also examined for comparison. No significant space-time clustering was found among the leptospirosis cases, indicating no evidence for micro-epidemics. By comparison, statistically significant clusterin

Variola minor in Bragança Paulista County, 1956. Distribution of onset of cases in the two schools including most school children with variola.

Class attendance during illness was confirmed for numerous pupils of two schools. Successive generations whose median cases were separated by an interval consistent with the "serial interval" of variola minor were clearly found in the epidemic curve for II of the 29 classes with cases from both schools. Twenty two other classes had no case at all.
