Training variability facilitates the flexibility of goal-specific spatial probability learning.

Selection history is traditionally characterized as a rigid and automated habit that persists regardless of current goals. Although recent research suggests that explicit goals can modulate this process, the mechanisms underlying this flexibility and its acquisition conditions remain poorly understood. Across two experiments using simple geometric shapes, the present study examined the joint modulatory effects of explicit goals and training variability on spatial probability learning. Experiment 1 demonstrated that explicit goals can directly activate the spatial priority map, ruling out confo

Pharmacological stimulation of hippocampal GPR35 impairs spatial navigation, learning, and memory.

GPR35 is an orphan receptor expressed in astrocytes and neurons of the central nervous system (CNS), including the hippocampus; however, its role in cognitive functions is largely unknown. This study administered intra-hippocampal injections of GPR35 compound-10 (GPR35C10; a GPR35-selective agonist), ML194 (a GPR35-selective antagonist), and the combination of both to elucidate their pharmacological actions in the Barnes maze. Compared to the vehicle (10 % DMSO) and ML194 groups, animals treated with GPR35C10 showed a higher latency and longer distance to solve the maze (p < 0.05) (an effect p

SpatialFormer: universal spatial representation learning from subcellular molecular to multicellular landscapes.

Understanding gene spatial expression and the organization of multicellular systems is vital for disease diagnosis and studying biological processes. However, existing models often struggle to integrate gene expression data with cellular spatial information effectively. Here we introduce SpatialFormer, a hybrid framework combining convolutional networks and transformers to learn single-cell multimodal and multiscale information in the niche context, including expression data and subcellular gene spatial distribution. Pretrained on 700 million cell pairs from 17 million spatially resolved singl

STCGCar: Graph Contrastive Learning with Reliable Augmentation for Spatial Transcriptomics Clustering.

Accurately identifying spatial domains based on spatial transcriptomics (ST) data can greatly promote our understanding of cellular composition and tissue organization. While graph neural networks (GNNs) have shown significant advancements in spatial clustering, they tend to be insensitive to noisy edges, leading to intersections among identified spatial domains. Here, we introduce a GNN-based ST Clustering framework, called STCGCar, utilizing a Graph Contrastive learning model with reliable augmentation and redundancy reduction strategies. The framework begins by creating an enhanced view thr

Machine learning to detect melanoma exploiting nuclei morphology and Spatial organization.

Cutaneous melanoma is one of the most lethal forms of skin cancer, and its incidence is increasing globally. Its diagnosis typically relies on manual histopathological examination, a process that is both complex and time consuming. In this study, we propose an automated diagnostic tool, capable of generating interpretable results to aid clinical decision-making. A total of 146 whole slide images are included in the study, encompassing various lesion types: congenital nevi, dysplastic nevi, melanomas, and melanomas on nevi. The images were first processed using a multi-resolution image processi

Learning Temporal Distribution and Spatial Correlation Toward Universal Moving Object Segmentation.

The goal of moving object segmentation is separating moving objects from stationary backgrounds in videos. One major challenge in this problem is how to develop a universal model for videos from various natural scenes since previous methods are often effective only in specific scenes. In this paper, we propose a method called Learning Temporal Distribution and Spatial Correlation (LTS) that has the potential to be a general solution for universal moving object segmentation. In the proposed approach, the distribution from temporal pixels is first learned by our Defect Iterative Distribution Lea

Mice lacking hippocampal left-right asymmetry show non-spatial learning deficits.

Left-right asymmetry is known to exist at several anatomical levels in the brain and recent studies have provided further evidence to show that it also exists at a molecular level in the hippocampal CA3-CA1 circuit. The distribution of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor NR2B subunits in the apical and basal synapses of CA1 pyramidal neurons is asymmetrical if the input arrives from the left or right CA3 pyramidal neurons. In the present study, we examined the role of hippocampal asymmetry in cognitive function using β2-microglobulin knock-out (β2m KO) mice, which lack hippocampal asymmetry.

[Intrauterine stress impairs spatial learning in the progeny of Wistar rats].

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal stress is a group of psychophysiological responses that a pregnant female shows when confronting by a threatening situation. This produces neurochemical changes that may affect hippocampal development of the offspring. AIM: To analyze the effects of intrauterine stress on spatial learning and memory of Wistar rat offspring. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wistar rats were divided in two groups: Control and prenatal stress. During the critical period for the development of the central nervous system development (from day 12 to 18 of gestation), the experimental rats were exposed

Sleep enhances off-line spatial and temporal motor learning after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with chronic stroke demonstrate sleep-dependent off-line motor learning of a continuous tracking task. However, it remains unclear which aspects of learned movements are preferentially enhanced by sleep (ie, spatial accuracy and/or the time lag of tracking). OBJECTIVE: . The purpose of this study was to investigate whether spatial tracking accuracy, temporal tracking accuracy, or both are enhanced by sleep during off-line motor learning after stroke. METHODS: . Individuals with chronic stroke and control participants either practiced a continuous tracking task in the

Calcium chelation improves spatial learning and synaptic plasticity in aged rats.

Impaired regulation of intracellular calcium is thought to adversely affect synaptic plasticity and cognition in the aged brain. Comparing young (2-3 months) and aged (23-26 months) Fisher 344 rats, stratum radiatum-evoked CA1 field EPSPs were smaller and long-term potentiation (LTP) was diminished in aged hippocampal slices. Resting calcium, in presynaptic axonal terminals in the CA1 stratum radiatum area, was elevated in aged slices. Loading the slice with the calcium chelator, BAPTA-AM, depressed LTP in young slices, but enhanced this plasticity in old slices. Forty-five minutes following L

Vitamin A deficiency produces spatial learning and memory impairment in rats.

Vitamin A and its derivatives (retinoids) play important roles in many physiological processes. The recent finding of high levels of cellular retinol-binding protein type 1 immunoreactivity, cellular retinoic acid-binding protein type 1 immunoreactivity and the presence of nuclear retinoid receptors in the central nervous system of adult rodents suggests that retinoids may carry out important roles in the adult brain. In consideration of the role of the hippocampus in spatial learning and memory we evaluated the effect of vitamin A deprivation in adult rats on these functions. Following 12 wee

Spatial learning in transgenic mice expressing human presenilin 1 (PS1) transgenes.

Dominant mutations in the Presenilin 1 gene are linked to an aggressive, early-onset form of familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD). Spatial memory of transgenic (Tg) mice expressing either mutant (lines Tg(M146L)1, Tg(M146L)76, Tg(L286V)198) or wild type (line Tg(PS1wt)195) human PS1 transgenes was investigated in the Morris water maze (WM) test at 6 and 9 months of age. The results showed that the mutated Tg mice had increased swim speed when compared to non-Tg littermates or Tg PS1 wild type mice. The swim speed difference did not, however, significantly affect the spatial learning in the WM te

The detrimental effects of constant hyperglycemia on neural function have been quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated in the setting of diabetes mellitus. Some of the hallmark features of diabetic encephalopathy (DE) are impaired synaptic adaptation and diminished spatial learning capacity. Chronic and progressive cognitive dysfunction, perpetuated by several positive feedback mechanisms in diabetic subjects, facilitates the development of early-onset dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Despite the numerous clinical manifestations of DE having been described in detail and their pathophysiolo

Move to learn: Integrating spatial information from multiple viewpoints.

Recalling a spatial layout from multiple orientations - spatial flexibility - is challenging, even when the global configuration can be viewed from a single vantage point, but more so when it must be viewed piecemeal. In the current study, we examined whether experiencing the transition between multiple viewpoints enhances spatial memory and flexible recall for a spatial configuration viewed simultaneously (Exp. 1) and sequentially (Exp. 2), whether the type of transition matters, and whether action provides an additional advantage over passive experience. In Experiment 1, participants viewed

Failure to learn a new spatial format in children with developmental dyslexia.

A general problem in studying children with developmental dyslexia is how to separate inefficiency in learning on the one hand from exposure to written texts on the other. To evaluate dyslexic children's learning abilities with graphemic materials, we tested their improvement in a condition that minimized previous experience with words (i.e., "novel words") and with the standard, horizontal spatial letter array (i.e., a non-canonical "zigzag" format). We selected five pairs of children with dyslexia and (younger) typically developing readers matched for reading speed and accuracy in these spec

The effect of electroconvulsive shock and nifedipine on spatial learning and memory in rats.

Several traumatic events including brain contusion, electroconvulsive shock therapy, epileptic seizures and others, may cause short-term retrograde amnesia. In spite of much recent attention, pharmacological treatment of memory impairment has not been fully successful. In the present paper we report on the possible antiamnesic action of the L-type calcium channel blocker, nifedipine. Rats trained in the spatial memory task showed gradual improvement in the escape latency to find the submerged platform. After completion of the learning, they also showed a strong spatial bias toward the place th

Spatial and discrimination learning in rodents infected with the nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Recent work has shown that mice with subclinical parasitic infections suffer impaired spatial learning and memory, as assayed in an open-field water maze. Although the mechanism underlying this effect is not clear, the phenomenon has been reported following infection with both a protozoan parasite (Eimeria vermiformis) and a gastrointestinal nematode (Heligmosomoides polygyrus). In a variety of experiments, we examined the effects of a different gastrointestinal nematode, Strongyloides ratti, on the ability of rats and mice to learn a spatial or a discrimination task. Animals were tested at va

Hemicholinium-3 impairs spatial learning and the deficit is reversed by cholinomimetics.

The effects of hemicholinium-3 (HC-3) on spatial discrimination learning were studied. Rats were equipped with indwelling cannulae in the right lateral ventricle and, following recovery, were trained on a two platform spatial discrimination task in a water maze. In this task a visible escape platform remains in a fixed position in the pool during a single training session, whilst the location of an identical "float" (which affords no escape) is randomly varied. For each session the location of the fixed escape platform was changed and the rats were retrained to criterion following pretreatment

DeepGFT: identifying spatial domains in spatial transcriptomics of complex and 3D tissue using deep learning and graph Fourier transform.

The rapid advancements in spatially resolved transcriptomics (SRT) enable the characterization of gene expressions while preserving spatial information. However, high dropout rates and noise hinder accurate spatial domain identification for understanding tissue architecture. We present DeepGFT, a method that simultaneously models spot-wise and gene-wise relationships by integrating deep learning with graph Fourier transform for spatial domain identification. Benchmarking results demonstrate the superiority of DeepGFT over existing methods. DeepGFT detects tumor substructures with immune-relate

Unraveling microglial spatial organization in the developing human brain with DeepCellMap, a deep learning approach coupled with spatial statistics.

Mapping cellular organization in the developing brain presents significant challenges due to the multidimensional nature of the data, characterized by complex spatial patterns that are difficult to interpret without high-throughput tools. Here, we present DeepCellMap, a deep-learning-assisted tool that integrates multi-scale image processing with advanced spatial and clustering statistics. This pipeline is designed to map microglial organization during normal and pathological brain development and has the potential to be adapted to any cell type. Using DeepCellMap, we capture the morphological
