Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters, a Treatable Provocateur of Parkinson's Disease: Hypothesis, Evidence and Species Specificity.

Epidemiological and eradication trial evidence indicates that Helicobacter pylori, a major causative factor in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, is a driver of the hypokinesia of Parkinson's disease (PD). Psychological (cognitive impairment, depression and anxiety) and gastrointestinal (peptic ulceration and constipation) PD features can precede the symptomatic onset of motor features by decades. We hypothesise that the non-H. pylori Helicobacters (NHPH), which have farm, companion and wild animals as their main hosts, can have a role in PD aetiopathogenesis. In those occupationally at risk of

Comparative in-silico genome analysis of Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani: A step towards its species specificity.

Comparative genome analysis of recently sequenced Leishmania (L.) donovani was unexplored so far. The present study deals with the complete scanning of L. (L.) donovani genome revealing its interspecies variations. 60 distinctly present genes in L. (L.) donovani were identified when the whole genome was compared with Leishmania (L.) infantum. Similarly 72, 159, and 265 species specific genes were identified in L. (L.) donovani when compared to Leishmania (L.) major, Leishmania (L.) mexicana and Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis respectively. The cross comparison of L. (L.) donovani in parallel

Species specificity in the adherence of staphylococci to canine and human corneocytes: a preliminary study.

Staphylococcal pyoderma is rarely contagious between dogs and humans, or humans and dogs. This study investigated the hypothesis that there are species differences in adherence of Staphylococcus intermedius (the most common isolate from dogs) and Staphylococcus aureus (the most common isolate from humans) to canine and human corneocytes. Sheets of corneocytes were collected from the ventral abdomen of 10 dogs and the medial forearm of 10 humans (all healthy and without any history or physical signs of skin disease) using double-sided tape. Staphylococcus intermedius from a case of canine bacte

Stage and species specificity of antigens encoded by two geographic strains of Schistosoma mansoni mRNA.

Proteins translated in vitro from Schistosoma mansoni adult worm mRNA were assessed for their antigenic specificities compared to different stages, strains and species of the parasite. RNA was extracted from both Puerto Rican and Brazilian parasites and directed the synthesis of high molecular weight proteins. Preabsorption of immune human serum with schistosomula was used to determine whether the in vitro translated proteins contained antigens shared between the adult and this immature stage. Three antigens (Mr 36,000, 29,000, 18,000) were observed to be present in both stages. When adult wor

Mercury-induced autoimmune glomerulonephritis in inbred rats. I. Kinetics and species specificity of autoimmune responses.

The nephropathy observed in rats after administration of mercuric chloride can be used to clarify the mechanisms underlying renal autoimmunity induced by chemicals. As a necessary preliminary step in the study of this animal model, we have investigated the kinetics and species-specificity of autoimmune responses to renal antigens. By a recently developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), circulating autoantibodies to the glomerular basement membrane of the kidney (anti-GBM) have been detected within 8 days after the initiation of mercuric chloride treatment. Anti-GBM antibodies reach

Species-specific effects of microplastics on juvenile fishes.

Microplastics contamination have been extensively reported in aquatic ecosystem and organisms. It is wildly acknowledged that the ingestion, accumulation and elimination of microplastics in fishes are species-specific, which mainly depending on the feeding behavior. This study aimed to investigate the effects of microplastics on the morphology and inflammatory response in intestines of fishes with different feeding types. Largemouth bass (carnivorous fish), grass carp (herbivorous fish) and Jian carp (omnivorous fish) were used as organism model. The contributing concentration and size of micr

Neural crest and the origin of species-specific pattern.

For well over half of the 150 years since the discovery of the neural crest, the special ability of these cells to function as a source of species-specific pattern has been clearly recognized. Initially, this observation arose in association with chimeric transplant experiments among differentially pigmented amphibians, where the neural crest origin for melanocytes had been duly noted. Shortly thereafter, the role of cranial neural crest cells in transmitting species-specific information on size and shape to the pharyngeal arch skeleton as well as in regulating the timing of its differentiatio

Species-specific activity of antibacterial drug combinations.

The spread of antimicrobial resistance has become a serious public health concern, making once-treatable diseases deadly again and undermining the achievements of modern medicine1,2. Drug combinations can help to fight multi-drug-resistant bacterial infections, yet they are largely unexplored and rarely used in clinics. Here we profile almost 3,000 dose-resolved combinations of antibiotics, human-targeted drugs and food additives in six strains from three Gram-negative pathogens-Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa-to identify general principles

Site- and species-specific hydrolysis rates of heroin.

The hydroxide-catalyzed non-enzymatic, simultaneous and consecutive hydrolyses of diacetylmorphine (DAM, heroin) are quantified in terms of 10 site- and species-specific rate constants in connection with also 10 site- and species-specific acid-base equilibrium constants, comprising all the 12 coexisting species in solution. This characterization involves the major and minor decomposition pathways via 6-acetylmorphine and 3-acetylmorphine, respectively, and morphine, the final product. Hydrolysis has been found to be 18-120 times faster at site 3 than at site 6, depending on the status of the a

Host species-specific translocation of Escherichia coli.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rate of translocation of Escherichia coli strains in different experimental/animal models. Four proficient translocating E. coli strains isolated from mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and/or the blood of rats (strains KIC-1 and KIC-2), from a fatal case of pancreatitis (HMLN-1) and from pigs (PC-1 isolated in this study) were tested for their ability to translocate across two host species and the Caco-2 cell line as a model of the human gut epithelium. HMLN-1 was found in the MLNs of all 15 pigs tested. This strain, however, did not translocate in a

Species-specific PCR determination of Listeria seeligeri.

Listeria seeligeri is a non-pathogenic bacterium coming under the genus Listeria. As this bacterium resembles other Listeria species such as L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii that are pathogenic to man and animals, it is important that rapid and precise identification techniques be available for L. seeligeri in cases where such determination is desirable. A specific molecular test on the basis of a uniquely present gene region in L. seeligeri will be of particular value under the circumstances. In this report, after comparative screening of genomic DNA from six Listeria species by dot blot hybr

Development of a species-specific probe for Mycobacterium xenopi.

In Europe, Mycobacterium xenopi is a frequently isolated species among opportunist mycobacteria, and represents one of the main agents of pulmonary infection due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Conventional identification of mycobacteria is a time-consuming and laborious process. In this study, we propose a rapid and simple method for the identification of M. xenopi using polymerase chain reaction. The amplified product consists of a specific probe, present in all 38 M. xenopi strains tested, which could not be amplified and did not present cross-hybridization with a set of 110 strains belong

Dissecting the Species-Specific Virome in Culicoides of Thrace.

Biting midges (Culicoides) are vectors of arboviruses of both veterinary and medical importance. The surge of emerging and reemerging vector-borne diseases and their expansion in geographical areas affected by climate change has increased the importance of understanding their capacity to contribute to novel and emerging infectious diseases. The study of Culicoides virome is the first step in the assessment of this potential. In this study, we analyzed the RNA virome of 10 Culicoides species within the geographical area of Thrace in the southeastern part of Europe, a crossing point between Asia

Species-Specific Inhibition of Necroptosis by HCMV UL36.

Viral infection activates cellular antiviral defenses including programmed cell death (PCD). Many viruses, particularly those of the Herpesviridae family, encode cell death inhibitors that antagonize different forms of PCD. While some viral inhibitors are broadly active in cells of different species, others have species-specific functions, probably reflecting the co-evolution of the herpesviruses with their respective hosts. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) protein UL36 is a dual cell death pathway inhibitor. It blocks death receptor-dependent apoptosis by inhibiting caspase-8 activation, and necr

Species-specific antifungal activity of blue light.

Fungal pathogens represent a significant threat to immunocompromised patients or individuals with traumatic injury. Strategies to efficiently remove fungal spores from hospital surfaces and, ideally, patient skin thus offer the prospect of dramatically reducing infections in at-risk patients. Photodynamic inactivation of microbial cells using light holds considerable potential as a non-invasive, minimally destructive disinfection strategy. Recent data indicate that high-intensity blue light effectively removes bacteria from surfaces, but its efficacy against fungi has not been fully tested. He

Reactive oxygen species in organ-specific autoimmunity.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been extensively studied in the induction of inflammation and tissue damage, especially as it relates to aging. In more recent years, ROS have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Here, ROS accumulation leads to apoptosis and autoantigen structural changes that result in novel specificities. ROS have been implicated not only in the initiation of the autoimmune response but also in its amplification and spreading to novel epitopes, through the unmasking of cryptic determinants. This review will examine the contribution of ROS to the path

Species-Specific Identification of Human Adenoviruses in Sewage.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) diversity in sewage was assessed by species-specific molecular methods. Samples of raw sewage were collected in 14 sewage disposal systems from January to December 2011, in Poland. HAdVs were detected in 92.1% of the analysed sewage samples and was significantly higher at cities of over 100 000 inhabitants. HAdV DNA was detected in sewage during all seasons. The most abundant species identified were HAdV-F (average 89.6%) and -A (average 19.6%), which are associated with intestine infections. Adenoviruses from B species were not detected. The result of the present study

Susceptibility to the ototoxic properties of toluene is species specific.

Toluene is the most widely used industrial solvent. It has been shown to be ototoxic in mice and rats, and to increase permanent threshold shift in conjunction with exposure to noise. Chinchillas are widely used for studying noise effects on the cochlea. The present study was initiated to study toluene and noise interaction in chinchillas. Thirty-three chinchillas were exposed to a 95 dBA 500 Hz octave band noise plus 2000 ppm toluene, 8 or 12 h per day for 10 days. Auditory function was estimated using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) to tones between 500 Hz and 16 kHz. There was no effe

HIV-1 Vif Gained Breadth in APOBEC3G Specificity after Cross-Species Transmission of Its Precursors.

APOBEC3G (A3G) is a host-encoded cytidine deaminase that potently restricts retroviruses such as HIV-1 and depends on its ability to package into virions. As a consequence of this, HIV-1 protein Vif has evolved to antagonize human A3G by targeting it for ubiquitination and subsequent degradation. There is an ancient arms race between Vif and A3G highlighted by amino acids 128 and 130 in A3G that have evolved under positive selection due to Vif-mediated selective pressure in Old World primates. Nonetheless, not all possible amino acid combinations at these sites have been sampled by nature, and
