This study investigated the effects of hearing loss and hearing experience on the acoustic features of infant-directed speech (IDS) to infants with hearing loss (HL) compared to controls with normal hearing (NH) matched by either chronological or hearing age (experiment 1) and across development in infants with hearing loss as well as the relation between IDS features and infants' developing lexical abilities (experiment 2). Both experiments included detailed acoustic analyses of mothers' productions of the three corner vowels /a, i, u/ and utterance-level pitch in IDS and in adult-directed sp

Speech production relies on motor control and cognitive processing and is linked to cerebellar function. In diseases where the cerebellum is impaired, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), speech abnormalities are common and can be detected by instrumental assessments. However, the potential of speech assessments to be used to monitor cerebellar impairment in MS remains unexplored. The aim of this study is to build an objectively measured speech score that reflects cerebellar function, pathology and quality of life in MS. Eighty-five people with MS and 21 controls participated in the study. Speech

A model is described in which the effects of articulatory movements to produce speech are generated by specifying relative acoustic events along a time axis. These events consist of directional changes of the vocal tract resonance frequencies that, when associated with a temporal event function, are transformed via acoustic sensitivity functions, into time-varying modulations of the vocal tract shape. Because the time course of the events may be considerably overlapped in time, coarticulatory effects are automatically generated. Production of sentence-level speech with the model is demonstrate

Purpose: This study investigated the acoustic and articulatory movement parameters underlying lexical stress production in children with apraxia of speech (CAS), children with articulation/phonological delay (i.e. speech delay, SD), and children with typical speech-language development (TD). We examined whether there were group differences in these instrumental measures of stress production.Method: Participants were 24 children (seven CAS, eight SD, nine TD) between three and seven years of age. Acoustic and kinematic measures, including acoustic duration, peak and average fundamental frequenc

Prosodic information aids segmentation of the continuous speech signal and thereby facilitates auditory speech processing. Durational and pitch variations are prosodic cues especially necessary to convey prosodic boundaries, but alaryngeal speakers have inconsistent control over acoustic parameters such as F0 and duration, being as a result noisy and less intelligible than normal speech. This case study has investigated whether one Spanish alaryngeal speaker proficient in both oesophageal and tracheoesophageal speech modes used the same acoustic cues for prosodic boundaries in both types of vo

Acoustic phonatory events were identified in 14 women diagnosed with ADSD and compared to those of 14 women age-matched (+/-2 years) with no evidence of vocal pathology/dysfunction. The three acoustic parameters examined during sustained vowel production and reading included phonatory breaks, aperiodicity, and frequency shifts. Intra- and intermeasurer correlations showed high reliability for the measures. Findings indicated that those with ADSD produced a greater frequency of aberrant acoustic events than the controls during both tasks. For the group with ADSD, the amount and type of each eve

Prolonged speech and its variants are a group of novel speech patterns that form the basis of a popular treatment for stuttering (Ingham, 1984). It is difficult to determine which features of prolonged speech are necessary for the elimination of stuttered speech because the speech pattern produces simultaneous changes in respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory activity. Experimental studies have shown that the modification of phonation and of speech rate contributes to stuttering reduction, and increased duration of speech segments and reduced variability of vowel duration are known to occur

The syllable repetitions of 24 child and eight teenage stutterers were investigated to assess whether the vowels neutralize and, if so, what causes this. In both groups of speakers, the vowel in CV syllable repetitions and the following fluent vowel were excised from conversational speech samples. Acoustic analyses showed the formant frequencies of vowels in syllable repetitions to be appropriate for the intended vowel and the duration of the dysfluent vowels to be shorter than those of the fluent vowels for both groups of speakers. The intensity of the fluent vowels was greater than that of t

Audiometric examinations are essential in the diagnosis of acoustic neuroma. Experience with the diagnosis of 41 neurinomas of the acoustic nerve show, however, that the tactics of audiometric examinations vary from one case to the other. The basic examination is in all instances an accurate examination of the threshold of hearing. When the threshold is normal or there are slight or medium severe losses on the side of the lesion, the tympanogram, impedance and speech audiometry and BERA are supreme examinations and all other audiometric examinations are redundant. For BERA alone limiting losse

The purpose of this investigation was to calculate, from vowels in continuous speech, the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ratio) and average fundamental vocal frequency (F0) for hearing-impaired young adults who demonstrated varying degrees of vocal tension/harshness, and to correlate these acoustic measures with the degree of perceived, vocal tension/harshness. Subjects for this investigation consisted of 20 hearing-impaired males and 20 hearing-impared females who ranged in degree of tension/harshness from severe to normal/relaxed. S/N ratios and F0s were calculated, using a computer analysis pro

PURPOSE: There are few evidence-based speech interventions designed to alter speech production in a way that ultimately results in increased speech intelligibility in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). The primary purpose of this study was to examine the impact of clear and loud speech cues on acoustic and perceptual features of speech production in adolescents with DS.
METHOD: Eight adolescents diagnosed with DS repeated sentences of varying lengths in three conditions: habitual, big mouth (i.e., clear speech), and strong voice (i.e., loud speech). Four hundred eighty adult listeners (20 l

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) is performed to suppress medically-resistant essential tremor (ET). However, stimulation induced dysarthria (SID) is a common side effect, limiting the extent to which tremor can be suppressed. To date, the exact pathogenesis of SID in VIM-DBS treated ET patients is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We investigate the effect of inactivated, uni- and bilateral VIM-DBS on speech production in patients with ET. We employ acoustic measures, tempo, and intelligibility ratings and patient's self-estimated speech to quantify SID, w

Speech-in-noise testing is a valuable component of audiological examination that can provide estimates of a listener's ability to communicate in their everyday life. It has long been recognized, however, that the acoustics of real-world environments are complex and variable and not well represented by a typical clinical test setup. The first aim of this study was to quantify real-world environments in terms of several acoustic parameters that may be relevant for speech understanding (namely speech-likeness, interaural coherence, and interaural time and level differences). Earlier acoustic anal

PURPOSE: Acoustic analysis is an objective and quantitative method in diagnosing speech disorders and evaluating treatment efficacy. Although many reports have used acoustic analysis for oral cancer patients, few studies have focused on the extent of tongue resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of acoustic analysis in the assessment of postoperative speech impairment in oral cancer patients.
METHODS: Postoperative speech data as well as Speech Handicap Index (SHI) and 5-point speech intelligibility scale were collected from 65 patients including 31 cases of oral canc

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate how face masks influenced the acoustic features of Chinese running speech in both temporal and spectral domains and how the intelligibility of the speech with face masks was affected in quiet and multitalker babbles. The relationship between the acoustic features and speech intelligibility was also examined.
METHOD: In Experiment 1, Mandarin Chinese sentences were recorded by 24 native Mandarin Chinese speakers wearing a surgical mask, a KN95 mask, or not wearing a mask and temporal modulation (TM) depth; speaking rate, spectral tilt, and ave

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease with pathological hallmarks and different clinical presentations. Recently, the Movement Disorder Society (MDS) promoted a new classification; specific combinations of the core clinical features identify different phenotypes, including PSP with Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) and PSP with predominant parkinsonism (PSP-P). Since speech disorders are very common in PSP, they were included in the MDS-PSP criteria as a supportive clinical feature in the form of hypokinetic, spastic dysarthria. However, little is known about how dys

Speech rate reduction is a global speech therapy approach for speech deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) that has the potential to result in changes across multiple speech subsystems. While the overall goal of rate reduction is usually improvements in speech intelligibility, not all people with PD benefit from this approach. Speech rate is often targeted as a means of improving articulatory precision, though less is known about rate-induced changes in other speech subsystems that could help or hinder communication. The purpose of this study was to quantify phonatory changes associated with sp
