PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with adults with dysarthria were surveyed to investigate trends of clinical practice for assessing speech intelligibility.
METHOD: Two hundred ninety-six SLPs responded to an online survey October 22-November 30, 2015.
RESULTS: Findings showed that 35% of SLPs lacked access to any standardized assessments of intelligibility, with 66% of these implicating cost as the main reason. Work settings played a role, as all SLPs working in Veterans Affairs hospitals and 97% of SLPs working in university or research clinics reported access to at lea

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between scaled speech intelligibility and selected acoustic variables in persons with dysarthria. Control speakers and speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) produced sentences which were analyzed acoustically and perceptually. The acoustic variables included total utterance durations, segment durations, estimates of the acoustic vowel space, and slopes of formant transitions; the perceptual variables included scaled speech intelligibility and severity of speech involvement. Results indicated that

Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to measure the test-retest stability of single-word intelligibility in a group of 28 speakers with chronic apraxia of speech and aphasia. Method The Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech was administered twice to each participant, with samples separated by 1 week. Scoring of recorded samples was completed independently by three expert listeners using transcription and multiple-choice scoring formats. Results Percent intelligible words was very similar for the group over the two sampling times for both scoring formats (i.e., within 1.5%

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to predict consonant recognition scores of adults, children, and children with hearing impairment, using the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII). It was hypothesized that an adult-derived transfer function would be insufficient to predict the scores for children, and that transfer functions for normally hearing listeners would be insufficient to predict scores for children with hearing impairment. Proficiency corrections for age and hearing loss were explored.
DESIGN: A 21-consonant test of speech recognition was applied across five signal to noise ra

BACKGROUND: Voice cloning technologies powered by artificial intelligence (AI) may provide new opportunities to study the perceptual effects of dysphonia, particularly in rare voice disorders where clinical data are scarce. This study examined whether AI-generated voice clones can capture the intelligibility characteristics of dysphonic speech.
METHODS/DESIGN: Researchers generated voice clones for 12 speakers, including six speakers with dysphonia and six vocally healthy speakers. Sixty-four listeners evaluated both natural and AI-produced speech samples across three experiments. In Experime

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning, improved understanding, of a degraded speech signal is driven by speech predictability. A hallmark feature of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is speech variability and inconsistency. This initial case study examined whether both naive and familiar listeners can improve their understanding of a child with CAS through perceptual training.
METHOD: Speech recordings were collected from a 4-year-old boy with CAS and presented to listeners within a structured pretest-training-posttest paradigm. In Experiment 1, naive listeners (n = 44) received training using speech

PURPOSE: In difficult listening conditions, the visual system assists with speech perception through lipreading. Stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) is used to investigate the interaction between the two modalities in speech perception. Previous estimates of audiovisual benefit and SOA integration period differ widely. A limitation of previous research is a lack of consideration of visemes-categories of phonemes defined by similar lip movements when produced by a speaker-to ensure that selected phonemes are visually distinct. This study aimed to reassess the benefits of audiovisual lipreading to s

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between ankyloglossia and speech is controversial. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of tongue-tie release on speech articulation and intelligibility.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted. Pediatric patients (>2 years of age) being referred for speech concerns due to ankyloglossia were assessed by a pediatric otolaryngologist, and speech articulation was formally assessed by a speech language pathologist using the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation 2 (GFTA-2). Patients then underwent a tongue-tie release procedure in clinic. Aft

PURPOSE: Across the treatment literature, behavioral speech modifications have produced variable intelligibility changes in speakers with dysarthria. This study is the first of two articles exploring whether measurements of baseline speech features can predict speakers' responses to these modifications.
METHODS: Fifty speakers (7 older individuals and 43 speakers with dysarthria) read a standard passage in habitual, loud, and slow speaking modes. Eighteen listeners rated how easy the speech samples were to understand. Baseline acoustic measurements of articulation, prosody, and voice quality

BACKGROUND: Previous work indicates that single word intelligibility tests developed for dysarthria are sensitive to segmental production errors in aphasic individuals with and without apraxia of speech. However, potential listener learning effects and difficulties adapting elicitation procedures to coexisting language impairments limit their applicability to left hemisphere stroke survivors. AIMS: The main purpose of this study was to examine basic psychometric properties for a new monosyllabic intelligibility test developed for individuals with aphasia and/or AOS. A related purpose was to ex

The reported study investigated the effect of 7 rate control methods (RCM) on running speech intelligibility, speaking rate (SR), articulation rate (AR) and pause characteristics in 27 individuals with dysarthria. The data reveal that with the exception of slower on demand, each RCM resulted in lower mean SRs and ARs (p < 0.05). Clinically significant improvements in intelligibility were found in half of the participants with different types of dysarthria. The majority of them had normal or decreased ARs and SRs. The most effective methods were: alphabet board, hand tapping and pacing board. F

BACKGROUND: Dysarthia is a common sequela of cerebral palsy (CP), directly affecting both the intelligibility of speech and the child's psycho-social adjustment. Speech therapy focused exclusively on the articulatory organs does not always help CP children to speak more intelligibly. The program of art therapy described here has proven to be helpful for these children.
MATERIAL/METHODS: From among all the CP children enrolled in our art therapy program from 2005 to 2009, we selected a group of 14 boys and girls (average age 15.3) with severe dysarthria at baseline but no other language or cog

Many children with Down syndrome have difficulty with speech intelligibility. The present study used a parent survey to learn more about a specific factor that affects speech intelligibility, i.e. childhood verbal apraxia. One of the factors that affects speech intelligibility for children with Down syndrome is difficulty with voluntarily programming, combining, organising, and sequencing the movements necessary for speech. Historically, this difficulty, childhood verbal apraxia, has not been identified or treated in children with Down syndrome but recent research has documented that symptoms

Two experiments were conducted to examine the intelligibility of 72 passages of connected discourse prepared by Cox and McDaniel in their development of the Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) test. Intelligibility was assessed with a method-of-adjustment (MOA) procedure in which listeners adjusted the level of a multi-talker babble until they could just understand 50% of a passage; the measure of intelligibility was the signal-to-babble ratio, dB S/B. The objective was to develop a Revised Speech Intelligibility Rating (RSIR) test that would comprise a large number of equivalent passages that

The prevalence and severity of hearing impairment caused by ototoxic drugs are surprisingly high. This emphasizes the importance of the questions arising from the treatment. In 33.7% of the cases, the hearing impairment caused by ototoxic antibiotics was of severe degree and in 25.4%, it was extremely severe. Parenteral, topical or oral administration of aminioglycoside antibiotics is dangerous. Because of the very poor speech intelligibility, most probably not only the spiral organ but the vestibulocochlear nerve and the higher auditory pathways are also affected by these antibiotics. In some

The current study examines vowel intelligibility across interactive and non-interactive situations for individuals with dysarthria secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (PALS). The vowel space of these speakers is often characterized by centralization and lowering, negatively affecting intelligibility. In two experiments, listeners identified vowels produced by PALS in habitual speech (non-interactive), clear speech (non-interactive), and interactive matching. Clear speech and interactive matching elicited more intelligible vowels than habitual speech. Interactive matching productions wer

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate how face masks influenced the acoustic features of Chinese running speech in both temporal and spectral domains and how the intelligibility of the speech with face masks was affected in quiet and multitalker babbles. The relationship between the acoustic features and speech intelligibility was also examined.
METHOD: In Experiment 1, Mandarin Chinese sentences were recorded by 24 native Mandarin Chinese speakers wearing a surgical mask, a KN95 mask, or not wearing a mask and temporal modulation (TM) depth; speaking rate, spectral tilt, and ave

BACKGROUND: Successful communication is vital to quality of life. One group commonly facing speech and communication difficulties is individuals with intellectual disability (ID). A novel route to encourage clear speech is offered by mainstream smart speakers (e.g., Amazon Alexa and Google Home). Smart speakers offer four factors important for learning: reward immediacy, spaced practice, autonomy/intrinsic motivation and reduced social barriers. Yet the potential of smart speakers to improve speech intelligibility has not been explored before.
AIMS: To determine whether providing individuals
