Language, speech, and hearing services in schools2018eng
PURPOSE: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) can have a negative impact on literacy development, social-emotional well-being, and participation across the life span. Despite this, many public schools do not provide appropriate or timely services to this population of children. In large part, this is a result of variation in how state and local agencies interpret "educational performance" as outlined within the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. The purpose of this study was to explore which educational performance factors speech-language pathologists (SLPs) consider when determining eligib

PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to describe the current state of practice for writing Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs).
METHOD: IEP goals for 146 children receiving services for SSDs within public school systems across two states were coded for their dominant theoretical framework and overall quality. A dichotomous scheme was used for theoretical framework coding: cognitive-linguistic or sensory-motor. Goal quality was determined by examining 7 specific indicators outlined by an empirically tested rating tool. In total,

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Several studies indicate a close relation between auditory and speech motor functions in children with speech sound disorders (SSD). The aim of this study was to investigate the ability to compensate and adapt for perturbed auditory feedback in children with SSD compared to age-matched normally developing children.
METHOD: 17 normally developing children aged 4.1-8.7 years (mean=5.5, SD=1.4), and 11 children with SSD aged 3.9-7.5 years (mean=5.1, SD=1.0) participated in the study. Auditory feedback was perturbed by real-time shifting the first and second formant of the vow

PURPOSE: The intent of this study was to examine the longitudinal morpho-syntactic progression of children with Speech Sound Disorders (SSD) grouped according to Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) scores.
METHODS: Thirty-seven children separated into four clusters were assessed in their pre-kindergarten and Grade 1 years. Cluster 1 were children with typical development; the other clusters were children with SSD. Cluster 2 had good pre-kindergarten MLU; Clusters 3 and 4 had low MLU scores in pre-kindergarten, and (respectively) good and poor MLU outcomes.
RESULTS: Children with SSD in pre-kinder

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of parenting for the child's early socio-emotional development, parenting perceptions and behaviours, and their correlates, should be assessed as early as possible in the child's life. The goals of the present study were 1) to confirm, in two parallel population-based samples, including a large sample of twins, the factor structure of a new self-administered questionnaire assessing both parents' specific parenting perceptions and behaviours toward their 5-month-old infants (i.e., parental self-efficacy, perceived parental impact, parental hostile-reactive behav

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was, first, to expand our understanding of typical speech development regarding segmental contrast and anticipatory coarticulation, and second, to explore the potential diagnostic utility of acoustic measures of fricative contrast and anticipatory coarticulation in children with speech sound disorders (SSD).
METHOD: In a cross-sectional design, 10 adults, 17 typically developing children, and 11 children with SSD repeated carrier phrases with novel words with fricatives (/s/, /ʃ/). Dependent measures were 2 ratios derived from spectral mean, obtained from pe

This study aims to demonstrate that speech sound disorders associated with central auditory processing disorder stem from a processing disorder in the central auditory pathways during listening, rather than from an articulation-based disorder. Included 25 children with articulation problems (WAP; 7 females, 18 males) and 25 typically developing children without articulation problems (WoAP; 10 females, 15 males), aged 5-8 years. Assessments comprised the Hacettepe Articulation Test, Scan-C subtests (Filtered Words, Auditory Figure-Ground, Competing Words, Competing Sentences), and the Denver II

A growing body of research suggests that cases of speech sound errors that have not responded to previous intervention can sometimes be eliminated through speech therapy incorporating visual biofeedback. Aside from considerations related to the specific biofeedback type, acquisition and generalization of a motor plan may be linked to treatment intensity. Several researchers have raised the possibility that inadequate dosage levels may present a significant barrier to success. Thus, the current study aimed to assess the relationship between treatment intensity and treatment outcomes. Twenty-nin

BACKGROUND: Psycholinguistic models of language production provide a framework for determining the locus of language breakdown that leads to speech-sound disorder (SSD) in children.
AIMS: To examine whether children with SSD differ from their age-matched peers with typical speech and language development (TD) in the ability phonologically to encode lexical items that have been accessed from memory.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Thirty-six children (18 with TD, 18 with SSD) viewed pictures while listening to interfering words (IW) or a non-linguistic auditory stimulus presented over headphones either

Few studies have investigated the role of gene x environment interactions (G x E) in speech, language, and literacy disorders. Currently, there are two theoretical models, the diathesis-stress model and the bioecological model, that make opposite predictions about the expected direction of G x E, because environmental risk factors may either strengthen or weaken the effect of genes on phenotypes. The purpose of the current study was to test for G x E at two speech sound disorder and reading disability linkage peaks using a sib-pair linkage design and continuous measures of socioeconomic status

Speech-sound disorder (SSD) is a complex behavioral disorder characterized by speech-sound production errors associated with deficits in articulation, phonological processes, and cognitive linguistic processes. SSD is prevalent in childhood and is comorbid with disorders of language, spelling, and reading disability, or dyslexia. Previous research suggests that developmental problems in domains associated with speech and language acquisition place a child at risk for dyslexia. Recent genetic studies have identified several candidate regions for dyslexia, including one on chromosome 3 segregati

BACKGROUND: Speech and language are interconnected systems, and language disorder often co-occurs with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and non-CAS speech sound disorders (SSDs). Potential trade-off effects between speech and language in connected speech in children without overt language disorder have been less explored.
METHOD: Story retell narratives from 24 children (aged 5;0-6;11 [years;months]) with CAS, non-CAS SSD, and typical development were analyzed in Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) regarding morphosyntactic complexity (mean length of C-unit in words [MLCU]), l

Purpose Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are faced with the challenge of quickly and accurately identifying children who present with speech sound disorders (SSD) compared to typically developing (TD) children. The goal of this study was to compare the clinical relevance of two speech sampling methods (single-word vs. connected speech samples) in how sensitive they are in detecting atypical speech sound development in children, and to know whether the information obtained from single-word samples is representative enough of children's overall speech sound performance. Method We compared the

Purpose This study aims to give an insight in clinical reasoning (diagnosis and intervention) of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the Netherlands for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). Method The study featured a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative) design. Semistructured interviews containing nondirective, open-ended questions were conducted with 33 SLPs, which were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis. Other SLPs (137) filled out a questionnaire on the same topics. Multiple-choice questions were analyzed by descriptive frequencies, while open-ended questions we

Speech sound distortion is considered to be a salient feature of neuromotor speech disorders such as cerebellar dysarthria and apraxia of speech. The aim of this study was to compare the temporal and spatial aspects of speech of two persons with acquired cerebellar dysarthria and of one person with acquired apraxia of speech. Voice onset time of [d], duration of articulatory closure of [d], duration of [s] and [l], formants of [l] and the range of acoustic energy of [s] were analysed spectrographically in a number of utterances with various sound structures. The results indicated that spatial

BACKGROUND: For children with speech sound disorder (SSD), speech intervention often involves a considerable amount of home-training, to achieve high-enough training frequency to promote speech change. A digital speech-training app has been developed that could serve as a cost-effective means of providing accessible intervention to children with SSD.
AIMS: To evaluate whether self-supervised home-training with the app Pop2TalkNordic can expedite more target-like speech for children with SSD and to explore children's experiences of using the app.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Four 4-6-year-old Swed

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) of unknown origin usually need high-intensity speech intervention delivered by a speech and language therapist (SLT) and there is a rich evidence base focusing on these interventions. However, access to direct SLT services can be challenging, leaving many children with no timely support. To date there is no systematic review of possible interventions for children with SSD of unknown origin that do not require direct SLT input.
AIMS: To describe a protocol for a systematic review of non-SLT-delivered interventions for children with SSD of

Purpose This study explored the intervention processes used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to treat children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). Method Semistructured, individual, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Australian SLPs. Inductive content analysis was used to classify the data to provide a description of current intervention processes for children with SSDs. Results Three main factors were identified relating to the intervention processes used by SLPs: (a) target selection, (b) therapy approaches, and (c) structural and procedural aspects of therapy sessions, includi

PURPOSE: While many examples of speech pathology intervention approaches for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist in English and some other European languages, approaches with children in other languages are largely unknown. The aim was to determine current speech-language pathologists (SLPs) intervention practices with children with SSDs in the ME, and to then compare these with international practices.
METHODS: Data were collected by online questionnaire using Qualtrics. One hundred and eighty-nine SLPs completed the survey. Participants were required to be Arabic first languag

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the discriminative features that might contribute to differentiation of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) from other speech sound disorders (SSDs). Method A comprehensive literature search was conducted for articles or doctoral dissertations that included ≥ 1 child with CAS and ≥ 1 child with SSD. Of 2,071 publications screened, 53 met the criteria. Articles were assessed for (a) study design and risk of bias; (b) participant characteristics and confidence in diagnosis; and (c) discriminative perceptual, acoustic, or kinematic measures.
