[Research and professional practice in speech therapy].

The relationship between research and clinical practice is discussed based on the request of this last on new therapeutic perspectives and empirical confirmations of their decisions. Two examples of a clear and justified relation between theoretical research data and the later development of an intervention program illustrate the achievements and disappointments of these relationships. From this analysis, the proposal of evidence-based practice is discussed, the requirements involved and the difficulties in its practical application, especially in the intervention in aspects such as semantics

Recent advances in speech and language therapy.

Speech and language therapists are involved in the care of a wide range of pathogies. Recent changes have been marked by an increased involvement in feeding and swallowing work with premature babies, and oropharyngeal cancer sufferers. Changes have also occurred in assessment and management of communication problems resulting from acquired neurological pathologies such as stroke, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Some of these are discussed in the following article.

[Use of speech therapy in pediatric practice].

Prescription of speech rehabilitation is now an act often performed by pediatricians. We attempt to define the implications of this act by successively describing the specific features of the training of speech specialists, the main childhood disorders for which their help is sought, and the key principals of rehabilitation. We underline the need for an improved clinical definition of learning disabilities in children in order to propose optimal therapeutic strategies.

The Art of Speech: Elocution, Speech Training, Speech Therapy, and the Performative Limits of Class in Mid-twentieth-century Britain.

This article argues that elocution, speech training, and speech therapy-three professions concerned with the voice-were intimately bound up with a shifting politics of class in early- and mid-twentieth-century Britain. The last two, in particular, attempted to stake new claims in the changed landscape of the post-1945 welfare state. Proponents of speech training distinguished themselves from elocutionists and saw their role to improve children's speech, but they performatively disavowed class as an organizing category within it. This was paralleled by speech therapy, which emerged as a formal

Speech Therapy as Treatment for Supragastric Belching.

The purpose of this study was to describe a newly developed speech therapy program as an innovating therapeutic approach and to assess the results of this intervention in patients with supragastric belching. This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data from 73 patients with supragastric belching who were treated with speech therapy between 2007 and 2017. Of these, 48 were included for evaluation of therapy. Thirty patients had supragastric belching proven by 24-h impedance measurements. Eighteen patients were diagnosed by an experienced speech language pathologist as having

[The place of the native language in speech therapy].

A high number of children consulting a speech therapist for a language disorder have in common the direct or indirect experience of migration and therefore find themselves in a context of plurilingualism. A dedicated group, called Mélimémo, has been set up for children in such situations. It enables their linguistic and cultural diversity to be integrated into the speech therapy.

Social Robotics in Therapy of Apraxia of Speech.

Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder in which messages from the brain to the mouth are disrupted, resulting in an inability for moving lips or tongue to the right place to pronounce sounds correctly. Current therapies for this condition involve a therapist that in one-on-one sessions conducts the exercises. Our aim is to work in the line of robotic therapies in which a robot is able to perform partially or autonomously a therapy session, endowing a social robot with the ability of assisting therapists in apraxia of speech rehabilitation exercises. Therefore, we integrate computer visio

[The value of phonological analysis in speech therapy].

INTRODUCTION: Phonological analysis is a system for assessing children's speech that was introduced by Ingram in 1976. Despite being acknowledged as one of the essential elements for understanding speech therapy intervention in speech disorders, it is not a wholly generalised practice due to the difficulties involved and the shortage of standardised instruments for performing it. DEVELOPMENT: Here, we examine the impact of phonological analysis on speech therapy intervention and the history of the instruments that have been developed over the years to perform it, both in English and in Spanis

Ultrasound in speech therapy with adolescents and adults.

The present paper comprises an overview of techniques using ultrasound in speech (re)habilitation. Ultrasound treatment techniques have been developed for English lingual stops, vowels, sibilants, and liquids. These techniques come from a series of small n studies with adolescents and adults with severe hearing impairment, residual speech impairment or accented speech at the Interdisciplinary Speech Research Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. Ultrasound allows excellent visualization of tongue shape features, which is especially useful for feedback during speech (re)habilitation

[Speech therapy for the dysarthria of Parkinson's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Dysarthria is frequent in Parkinson's disease and impairs communication. STATE OF THE ART: Use of levodopa or surgical procedures does not significantly improve speech. Traditional speech therapy can lead to improvement of dysarthria, and intensive programs have recently showed substantial beneficial effects on parkinsonian dysarthria. PERSPECTIVES: More work is needed to evaluate speech treatment efficacy. CONCLUSION: Earlier and more frequent speech therapy in parkinsonian dysarthria patients may contribute to better quality of life.

Changes in referral to speech and language therapy.

This is a retrospective study of data collected on an information system, developed specifically for the use of speech and language therapists and used by eleven health care providers since 1985. Information prior to 1987 contain the artefacts of new technology and backload logging. Thus this paper reflects data from 1987 to 1995. Information on 70,000 clients amalgamated from these trusts allow us to reflect upon the changes in speech and language therapy over that period. The annual referral rate to these eleven trusts in 1987 was 4,129. The annual referral rate for the same trusts in 1995 h
