Anisakid parasite diversity in a pygmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps (Cetacea: Kogiidae) stranded at the edge of its distribution range in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean.

Anisakid nematodes are a globally distributed group of marine mammal parasites. Kogiid whales, including the pygmy sperm whale Kogia breviceps, host an assemblage of specific anisakid species. Currently, three species are known to be specific to kogiid hosts, i.e., Skrjabinisakis paggiae, S. brevispiculata, and the less studied Pseudoterranova ceticola. The aim of this study was to investigate the species diversity of anisakid nematodes sampled from a pygmy sperm whale stranded in 2013 at the edge of its distribution range in the Northeast Atlantic, specifically in the North of Scotland. Nemat

Historical data on age, growth and reproduction of pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf (Kogia sima) sperm whales stranded along the Southern African coastline, with additional information from Australian specimens.

South Africa has one of the highest stranding records in the world for both pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf (K. sima) sperm whales and as such offers a unique opportunity to study these little-known species. Data and samples from animals stranded along the South African and Namibian coastline between 1960 and 1999 were analysed to determine basic life history parameters for the two species. Teeth from 80 K. breviceps and 45 K. sima from South Africa and an additional 27 K. breviceps and one K. sima from Australia were available for age determination. A good correlation between cemental and d

Reinforcement learning-based framework for whale rendezvous via autonomous sensing robots.

Rendezvous with sperm whales for biological observations is made challenging by their prolonged dive patterns. Here, we propose an algorithmic framework that codevelops multiagent reinforcement learning-based routing (autonomy module) and synthetic aperture radar-based very high frequency (VHF) signal-based bearing estimation (sensing module) for maximizing rendezvous opportunities of autonomous robots with sperm whales. The sensing module is compatible with low-energy VHF tags commonly used for tracking wildlife. The autonomy module leverages in situ noisy bearing measurements of whale vocali

Parasites in stranded cetaceans of Patagonia.

There is an increasing interest in parasites of marine mammals of Argentina. Here, we examined several poorly known cetaceans, i.e., 2 spectacled porpoises and 1 Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoenidae), and 1 Gray's beaked whale and 1 Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphidae); we also updated the parasite information for 1 sperm whale (Physeteridae). These hosts strand only occasionally. We found Anisakis simplex s.l. in 2 spectacled porpoises and the Burmeister's porpoise, and recorded its distribution among the stomach chambers. Anisakis physeteris infected the sperm whale; Corynosoma cetaceum occurred i

Analysis of mercury and methylmercury concentrations, and selenium:mercury molar ratios for a toxicological assessment of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the most recent stranding event along the Adriatic coast (Southern Italy, Mediterranean Sea).

Mass stranding of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) is a rare event in the Mediterranean Sea. In September 2014, a pod of seven sperm whales became stranded along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. This is the seventh occurrence of this type since 1555 in this sea basin. Total concentrations of mercury (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) were measured from brain, muscle, liver and kidney of three female sperm whales, which died in this event. Analyses showed considerable, age-dependent variations in Hg and Se concentrations in the different organs. The contamination levels of

Organic ultraviolet filters in the blubber of two free-ranging deep-diving cetacean species.

The increasing use of personal care products has led to the widespread of organic UV filters (oUVFs) in marine ecosystems, yet their occurrence and potential impacts on pelagic and deep-sea environments remain unclear. This study assessed oUVFs contamination in the blubber of two deep-diving cetacean species -the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)-off Madeira Island, Eastern North Atlantic. Using microwave-assisted extraction and UHPLC-MS/MS, four of eleven targeted oUVFs were detected in blubber: homosalate, 2-ethylhexyl salicyla

Marine macrolitter ingestion by deep-diving cetaceans stranded in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula.

Marine litter represents a significant global threat to marine ecosystems and fauna, and has been extensively documented within the gastrointestinal tracts of numerous cetacean species. Beaked whales and sperm whales are considered particularly vulnerable to marine litter ingestion, likely as a consequence of their deep-diving foraging strategies. In this study, we investigated the ingestion of marine macrolitter and associated mortality in deep-diving cetaceans of the families Ziphiidae, Physeteridae and Kogiidae stranded along the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. In total, 167 stranded indivi

MONICEPH project: Monitoring cephalopods during whale-watching activity in the Azores (2020-2024).

BACKGROUND: The study of oceanic cephalopods off the Azores Archipelago began decades ago with the analysis of stomach contents from sperm whales that were hunted for the whaling industry. The identification of numerous cephalopod species contributed significantly to cephalopod taxonomy, as well as enhancing understanding of the sperm whale diet. In the 1990s, the shift from whaling to whale-watching created new opportunities to continue studying deep-ocean ecology: participatory research involving the actors of the new industry. NEW INFORMATION: MONICEPH (MONItoring CEPHalopods during whale-

Pacific Islands cetaceans: a review of strandings from 2006-2024.

We report significant pathological findings from 272 stranding investigations of 20 cetacean species in the Pacific Islands region between 2006 and 2024. Full or partial necropsies of 209 cases (76.8%) resulted in one or more diagnoses associated with death in 137 cases. Natural disease accounted for 62% of stranded animals; approximately half were in poor body condition due to chronic illness. Morbillivirus and Brucella sp. infections caused mortality in 11 species, including striped dolphins and Longman's beaked whales. Toxoplasmosis, of anthropogenic cause in Hawai'i, led to deaths of 2 spi

Identification of the myoglobin tyrosyl radical by immuno-spin trapping and its dimerization.

5,5-Dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) spin trapping in conjunction with antibodies specific for the DMPO nitrone epitope was used on hydrogen peroxide-treated sperm whale and horse heart myoglobins to determine the site of protein nitrone adduct formation. The present study demonstrates that the sperm whale myoglobin tyrosyl radical, formed by hydrogen peroxide-dependent self-peroxidation, can either react with another tyrosyl radical, resulting in a dityrosine cross-linkage, or react with the spin trap DMPO to form a diamagnetic nitrone adduct. The reaction of sperm whale myoglobin with equ

Deep breath out: molecular survey of selected pathogens in blow and skin biopsies from North Atlantic cetaceans.

BACKGROUND: Cetacean morbillivirus, herpesvirus, avian influenza virus (AIV) and Brucella spp. have been linked to numerous cetacean strandings in the Northeast (NE) Atlantic. Yet, their prevalence in free-living cetaceans remains insufficiently investigated, particularly in northern regions. Sensitivity of density estimates to off-axis beam pattern assumptions in deep-diving odontocetes.

Density estimation from passive acoustic monitoring requires knowledge of the sound production rates and signal characteristics of animal calls. This study explores the impact of the sound radiation pattern of echolocation clicks on density estimation for two deep-diving species, sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dense-beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris). The likelihood of receiving a click from within the narrow half-power biosonar beam at a randomly positioned receiver is small, and the study demonstrates that the majority of clicks are likely to be detected from outside this mai

Pathological and serological evidence of Brucella-infection in baleen whales (Mysticeti) in the western North Pacific.

Abnormal testes and uterus were observed in 13 males (33%) and one female (3%) out of 40 common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the western North Pacific. Similar lesions were found in testis and ovary, respectively, in one male (2%) and female (2%) out of 43 Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera edeni) in the western North Pacific. Grossly, granular lesions with caseation and calcification were main pathological signs, and they were restricted to reproductive organs of mature whales. Chronic purulent or granulomatous orchitis was observed by microscopic analysis. Antibodies to Brucella sp

Transient spectroscopy of the reaction of cyanide with ferrous myoglobin. Effect of distal side residues.

The reaction of cyanide metmyoglobin with dithionite conforms to a two-step sequential mechanism with formation of an unstable intermediate, identified as cyanide bound ferrous myoglobin. This reaction was investigated by stopped-flow time resolved spectroscopy using different myoglobins, i.e. those from horse heart, Aplysia limacina buccal muscle, and three recombinant derivatives of sperm whale skeletal muscle myoglobin (Mb) (the wild type and two mutants). The myoglobins from horse and sperm whale (wild type) have in the distal position (E7) a histidyl residue, which is missing in A. limaci

Killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles from the western South Atlantic Ocean include high frequency signals.

Acoustic parameters of killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles were described for the western South Atlantic Ocean and highlight the occurrence of high frequency whistles. Killer whale signals were recorded on December of 2012, when a pod of four individuals was observed harassing a group of sperm whales. The high frequency whistles were highly stereotyped and were modulated mostly at ultrasonic frequencies. Compared to other contour types, the high frequency whistles are characterized by higher bandwidths, shorter durations, fewer harmonics, and higher sweep rates. The results add to the knowled

A corrected wideband ambiguity function for robust biosonar strategy analysis.

The wideband ambiguity function (WAF) is a foundational tool for analyzing sonar signals, as it jointly characterizes time delay and Doppler-induced time stretching. However, when applied to nonstationary biological signals, this function is sensitive to temporal misalignment and integration-window effects, which can bias estimates of sonar performance. This paper proposes a corrected formulation of the WAF that compensates for Doppler-induced temporal shifts by centering the analysis around the energy centroid of the emitted signal. The corrected wideband ambiguity function (CWAF) preserves t
