Effect of spirulina and Liv-52 on cadmium induced toxicity in albino rats.

Oral administration of cadmium (6mg/kg body weight/day) as cadmium chloride (CdCl2) for 30 days resulted in a significant increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level and a decrease in the levels of copper, zinc, iron, selenium, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase when compared to normal control. Administration of either Liv-52 alone or in combination with spirulina produced a well pronounced protective effect in respect to these parameters in cadmium intoxicated rats. The protective effect of spirulina and Liv-52 in respect to biochemical c

Spirulina (arthrospira) protects against valproic acid-induced neural tube defects in mice.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a potent inducer of neural tube defects in human and mouse, its teratogenicity is associated with its potential to generation of free radicals and increase oxidative stress. Furthermore, spirulina (SP) has shown pharmacological properties against teratogenicity, which are attributed to its antioxidant potential. Accordingly, the present study was performed to investigate the influence of SP on the teratogenicity of VPA in imprinting control region mice and the possible mechanisms of action. VPA (sodium valproate) was administered intraperitoneally to mice on gestation da

Microencapsulation of spirulina using spray-drying technique: impact on morphological and structural characteristics.

Spirulina's valuable properties are often overshadowed by its off-flavour. This study demonstrates that microencapsulation using maltodextrin as wall material effectively addresses these challenges. The encapsulated spirulina (ES1) exhibited good encapsulation efficiency (49.70%) and yield (40.55%), with low wettability (0.08 ± 0.03gmin-1) and hygroscopicity (6.16 ± 0.18%). Significant composition changes were observed in ES1, including total lipids (6.22 ± 0.50g 100 g-1), carbohydrates (51.97 ± 0.75g 100 g-1), moisture (6.42 ± 0.24g 100 g-1), protein (31.59 ± 0.11g 100 g-1), ash (3.78 ± 0.85g

Evaluation of Antibiofilm Efficacy of C-Phycocyanin From Spirulina Species Against Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen reported to cause both systemic and mucosal infections. The characteristic morphological transition and complex biofilm formation significantly contribute to its virulence and resistance to antifungal agents. This increases the pressing demand for new, safe antifungal agents. This study examined the anti-biofilm and anti-virulence activities of C-Phycocyanin (C-PC), a natural photosynthetic pigment protein produced from Spirulina. C-PC demonstrated an inhibitory effect on biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner with a minimal biofilm in

Polysaccharide extract of Spirulina sp. increases effector immune-cell killing activities against cholangiocarcinoma.

Cyanobacteria and algae serving as promising food supplements have recently garnered attention for their emerging potential in anti-cancer activity. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) or bile duct cancer is one of the top-leading cancers affecting people, particularly in Asian continent. With patients exhibiting no or minimal symptoms in the early stages, advanced CCA is often diagnosed, and primary treatments such as surgery may not be suitable. Discovery of natural bioactive compounds for cancer treatments have, thus, attracted attention as one of the effective means to combat CCA or to supplement pri

Identification and molecular docking of tyrosinase inhibitory peptides from allophycocyanin in Spirulina platensis.

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase, a copper-containing metalloenzyme with catalytic activity, is widely found in mammals. It is the key rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes melanin synthesis. For humans, tyrosinase is beneficial to the darkening of eyes and hair. However, excessive deposition of melanin in the skin can lead to dull skin color and lead to pigmentation. Therefore, many skin-whitening compounds have been developed to decrease tyrosinase activity. This study aimed to identify a new tyrosinase inhibitory peptide through enzymatic hydrolysis, in vitro activity verification, molecular docking, a

Herbal supplement Spirulina stimulates inflammatory cytokine production in patients with dermatomyositis in vitro.

Spirulina, an herbal supplement and popular ingredient in health foods, is a potent stimulant of the immune system. Spirulina use is temporally associated with the onset or exacerbation of Dermatomyositis (DM), an autoimmune connective tissue disease that frequently affects the skin and muscle. In this study, we investigated the effect of Spirulina on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in DM and Healthy Controls (HCs), showing that Spirulina stimulates Interferon β (IFNβ), Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), and Interferon γ (IFNγ) production of DM PBMCs primarily via Toll-Like Receptor 4

Well-tolerated Spirulina extract inhibits influenza virus replication and reduces virus-induced mortality.

Influenza is one of the most common human respiratory diseases, and represents a serious public health concern. However, the high mutability of influenza viruses has hampered vaccine development, and resistant strains to existing anti-viral drugs have also emerged. Novel anti-influenza therapies are urgently needed, and in this study, we describe the anti-viral properties of a Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) cold water extract. Anti-viral effects have previously been reported for extracts and specific substances derived from Spirulina, and here we show that this Spirulina cold water extract

Combination Therapy of Salbutamol and Spirulina: A Novel Dual-Action Approach for Asthma Management.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disorder characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, oxidative stress, and recurrent bronchoconstriction. Conventional treatment with β2- agonists such as salbutamol provides rapid symptomatic relief through bronchodilation; however, it does not adequately address the underlying inflammation and oxidative damage associated with disease progression. Spirulina, a nutrient-rich cyanobacterium, possesses significant antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties that may complement the pharmacological effects of salbutamol. This review

Enzymatic Spirulina Extract Enhances the Vasodilation in Aorta and Mesenteric Arteries of Aged Rats.

Aging, one of the main factors associated with cardiovascular diseases, induces vascular modifications through nitric oxide (NO) release and oxidative stress. Based on the antioxidant properties of the non-enzymatic spirulina extract (non-Enz-Spir-E) and that degrading enzymes enhances the extract bioactivity, the aim of this study was to analyze the in vitro effect of an Alcalase-assisted Enz-Spir-E on the vasodilator function of conduit and resistance arteries (which differently contribute to blood pressure regulation) in aging. Therefore, thoracic aorta (TA) and mesenteric arteries (MA) fro
