Adrenal responses to splanchnic nerve stimulation in conscious calves given naloxone.

1. The effects of stimulating the peripheral end of the right splanchnic nerve in the presence of naloxone (2 mg kg-1) have been investigated in conscious 3 to 6-week-old calves. 2. Mean aortic blood pressure rose to significantly higher levels during splanchnic stimulation in bursts at 40 Hz for 1 s at 10 s intervals than it did during stimulation at the corresponding continuous frequency (4 Hz). Furthermore, naloxone significantly reduced the fall in mean vascular resistance in response to both patterns of stimulation. 3. The output of catecholamines from the adrenal gland, together with the

Radiofrequency Ablation and Alcohol Neurolysis of the Splanchnic Nerves for a Patient With Abdominal Pain From Pancreatic Cancer.

Abdominal pain related to gastrointestinal malignancy can be notoriously difficult to manage and can lead to significant morbidity and suffering. The blockade of the celiac plexus has traditionally been performed for alleviating abdominal pain related to malignancy. Visceral structures that are innervated by these nerves include the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, mesentery, omentum, and the gastrointestinal tract from the stomach to the transverse colon. Alternatively, this pain can be treated by disrupting visceral nociceptive signals at the splanchnic nerves. In this report, we describe our e

Central projections of thoracic splanchnic and somatic nerves and the location of sympathetic preganglionic neurons in Xenopus laevis.

The central and peripheral organization of thoracic visceral and somatic nervous elements was studied by applying dextran amines to the proximal cut ends of the thoracic splanchnic and somatic nerves in Xenopus laevis. Many labeled dorsal root ganglion cells of visceral afferents, and all somatic afferents, were located in a single ganglion of one spinal segment, and the two types of cells were distributed topographically within the ganglion. The labeled sympathetic preganglionic neurons were located predominantly in the same area of the thoracic spinal gray as in other frogs and in mammals. T

Increasing Blood Pressure by Greater Splanchnic Nerve Stimulation: a Feasibility Study.

The splanchnic vascular compartment is the major reservoir for intravascular blood volume, and dysregulation of the compartment was implicated in a series of cardiovascular conditions. We explored feasibility and effectiveness of an implantable cuff system on the greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) in healthy canines for short- and long-term neuromodulation to affect the circulation. Five mongrel hounds underwent minimally invasive right-sided unilateral GSN cuff placement. All animals underwent same day GSN stimulation and repeat stimulation at 9-30 days. Stimulation parameter optimization was con

[Perfusion and metabolism of liver and splanchnic nerve area under sevoflurane anesthesia].

In common with other halogenated volatile anaesthetics, sevoflurane causes a dose-related cardiovascular depression and therefore the affection of blood flow of different organ systems is suggested. So far known, sevoflurane is not different compared to isoflurane in affecting liver and splanchnic blood flow. Concluded from former published studies there was no case of hepatic toxicity of sevoflurane been published so that this substance can be used in patients with reduced hepatic function. The primary organic metabolite of sevoflurane is hexafluorisopropanol (HFIP), which is readily and rapi

Synaptotagmin-7 facilitates acetylcholine release in splanchnic nerve-chromaffin cell synapses during nerve activity.

Disturbances that threaten homeostasis elicit activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the adrenal medulla. The effectors discharge as a unit to drive global and immediate changes in whole-body physiology. Descending sympathetic information is conveyed to the adrenal medulla via preganglionic splanchnic fibers. These fibers pass into the gland and synapse onto chromaffin cells, which synthesize, store, and secrete catecholamines and vasoactive peptides. While the importance of the sympatho-adrenal branch of the autonomic nervous system has been appreciated for many decades, the m

Revisiting thoracic splanchnic nerve anatomy: implications for thoracoscopic splanchnicectomy and pain management.

PURPOSE: The thoracic splanchnic nerves-greater (GSN), lesser (LSN), and least (lSN)-are important targets in thoracic surgery and image-guided interventions, yet detailed quantitative characterization of their anatomy remains limited. This study aimed to define the morphometry, segmental origins, and anatomical variability of these nerves to improve understanding of clinically relevant anatomy. METHODS: Eighty sets of thoracic splanchnic nerves from 42 formalin-embalmed donors were dissected. Segmental contributions were recorded and classified, and morphometric measurements were obtained re

Splanchnic Nerve Block Mediated Changes in Stressed Blood Volume in Heart Failure.

OBJECTIVES: The authors estimated changes of stressed blood volume (SBV) induced by splanchnic nerve block (SNB) in patients with either decompensated or ambulatory heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). BACKGROUND: The splanchnic vascular capacity is a major determinant of the SBV, which in turn determines cardiac filling pressures and may be modifiable through SNB. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2 prospective, single-arm clinical studies in decompensated HFrEF (splanchnic HF-1; resting hemodynamics) and ambulatory heart failure (splanchnic HF-2; exercise hemodynamics). (In)activity-dependent alterations in resting and reflex control of splanchnic sympathetic nerve activity.

The negative effects of sympathetic overactivity on long-term cardiovascular health are becoming increasingly clear. Moreover, recent work done in animal models of cardiovascular disease suggests that sympathetic tone to the splanchnic vasculature may play an important role in the development and maintenance of these disease states. Work from our laboratory and others led us to hypothesize that a lack of chronic physical activity increases resting and reflex-mediated splanchnic sympathetic nerve activity, possibly through changes occurring in a key brain stem center involved in sympathetic reg

Characterization of mouse lumbar splanchnic and pelvic nerve urinary bladder mechanosensory afferents.

Sensory information from the urinary bladder is conveyed via lumbar splanchnic (LSN) and sacral pelvic (PN) nerves to the spinal cord. In the present report we compared the mechanosensitive properties of single afferent fibers in these two pathways using an in vitro mouse bladder preparation. Mechanosensitive primary afferents were recorded from the LSN or PN and distinguished based on their response to receptive field stimulation with different mechanical stimuli: probing (160 mg to 2 g), stretch (1-25 g), and stroking of the urothelium (10-1,000 mg). Four different classes of afferent were r

Sympathetic preganglionic efferent and afferent neurons mediated by the greater splanchnic nerve in rabbit.

Motion sickness, a multisymptom disorder characterized by abnormal gastrointestinal motility and emesis, can be induced by vestibular effects on the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system. However, the vestibular-autonomic pathways are unknown. As a first step in the analysis, we identified the locus of preganglionic sympathetic neurons (PSNs) and dorsal root afferent ganglionic neurons (DRGs) which supply sympathetic innervation to major portions of the gastrointestinal tract in the rabbit. Retrograde labeling of neurons was obtained by application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)

Blood pressure and splanchnic nerve activity are reduced by a vagally mediated opioid action.

An enkephalin analogue, D-Ala2-Met5-enkephalinamide (DAME), caused a fall in blood pressure (BP) following right atrial administration (RA) in urethane-anesthetized rats that were also atropinized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated. This reduction in BP was not related to opioid-induced bradycardia. At a dose of 250 micrograms/kg RA the maximum percentage change was -36.0 +/- 3.9% occurring within 10-15 s subsequent to administration. The fall in BP was blocked by both pretreatment with naloxone HCl (75-100 micrograms/kg i.v.) and bilateral cervical vagotomy. Similar hypotensive responses

Opioid withdrawal symptoms after neurolytic splanchnic nerve block in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Few reports on opioid withdrawal (OW) due to opioid tapering in cancer patients have been published. The incidence of and risk factors for OW after neurolytic splanchnic nerve block (NSNB) are unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the incidence of and risk factors for OW among cancer patients who could have reduced opioid doses after NSNB. METHODS: This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study. We reviewed the medical charts of patients who underwent NSNB for intractable cancer pain at four tertiary hospitals in Yokohama City from April 2005 to October 2020. We included

Thoracic osteophyte as a cause of symptomatic greater splanchnic nerve compression. Case report.

Thoracic osteophytes are a common feature of degenerative spine disease. However, it is rare that osteophytes overgrowth on the anterior surface of thoracic spine results in the compression of vital structures and causes symptoms. A 39-year old man with a two-year history of thoracic and upper abdominal pain was admitted to the neurosurgery ward after having been seen by several specialists. Thoracic spine MRI and CT scans were analyzed. Osteophytes were identified on the anterolateral right side at level T8-T9 and were indicated as a possible cause of the symptoms. After obtaining patient con
