Potential of Essential Oils and Major EO Constituents in the Chemical Control of Spodoptera frugiperda.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a major agricultural pest worldwide, causing significant economic loss to maize crops. Its control largely depends on synthetic pesticides, which contribute to resistance development, harm non-target organisms, and lead to environmental degradation. Essential oils and their main components offer a more sustainable and ecologically sound alternative for the management of S. frugiperda. This study evaluated the effects of selected essential oils and their bioactive compounds on the survival and behavior of S. frugiperda using toxicity and preference assays. Peppermint es

Cadmium and phthalate impacts developmental growth and mortality of Spodoptera littoralis, but not reproductive success.

Our environment is increasingly polluted with various molecules, some of which are considered endocrine disruptors. Metals and phthalates, originating from industrial activities, agricultural practices, or consumer products, are prominent examples of such pollutants. We experimentally investigated the impacts of the heavy metal cadmium and the phthalate DEHP on the moth Spodoptera littoralis. More specifically, larvae were reared in laboratory conditions, where they were exposed to diets contaminated with either two doses of cadmium at concentrations of 62.5 µg/g or 125 µg/g, two doses of DEHP

Evaluation of antibacterial activity induced by Staphylococcus aureus and Ent A in the hemolymph of Spodoptera littoralis.

The problem of antibiotic resistance considers one of the most dangerous challenges facing the medical field. So, it is necessary to find substitutions to conventional antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a bio-functional derivative that have been observed as one of the important solutions to such upcoming crisis. Owing to their role as the first line of defense against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This study was conducted to induce the immune response of Spodoptera littoralis larvae by inoculation of sub lethal doses of Staphylococcus aureus and its enterotoxin. Since Staphylococca

An ovary-specific mucin is associated with choriogenesis mediated by prostaglandin signaling in Spodoptera exigua.

Polytrophic ovarioles of Spodoptera exigua, a lepidopteran insect, begins with the development of oocytes and differentiation of nurse cells followed by vitellogenesis and choriogenesis. Compared with previtellogenic and vitellogenic developments, choriogenesis has not been clearly understood yet in endocrine control. This study investigated the expression and function of a mucin-like structural protein of S. exigua called Se-Mucin1 in choriogenesis. It was highly expressed in ovarioles containing chorionated oocytes. The expression level of Se-Mucin1 was increased during adult stage as early

Monitoring the Evolution of Resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to the Cry1F Protein in Argentina.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important and widely cultivated crops in Argentina. Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a common maize pest capable of causing significant yield losses and is most destructive in late-planted maize in subtropical regions, going through five to six generations per growing season. The Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) trait Herculex I Insect Protection technology by Dow AgroSciences and Pioneer Hi-Bred (HX I, event DAS-Ø15Ø7-1), expressing Cry1F protein, was launched in the 2005-2006 season in Argentina and was widely adopted because of th

Cross-resistance and Inheritance of Resistance to Emamectin Benzoate in Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), is a worldwide pest of many crops. Chemical insecticides are heavily used for its control in China, and serious resistance has been evolved in the field to a variety of insecticides including emamectin benzoate. Through repeated backcrossing to a susceptible strain (WH-S) and selection with emamectin benzoate, the trait conferring resistance to emamectin benzoate in a field-collected population of S. exigua (moderately resistant to emamectin benzoate and strongly resistant to pyrethroids and indoxacarb) was introgressed into WH-S to generate a near-is

Functional Characterization of Trypsin Genes in Spodoptera litura and Their RNA Silencing in Combination with Insecticides.

Trypsin is one of the major digestive proteinases secreted by the insect midgut. It plays important roles in digestion, molting, diapause, zymogen activation, innate immunity, reproduction and insecticide resistance. However, the functions of trypsin and its potential as a target for the control of Spodoptera litura, a polyphagous agricultural pest, remain poorly understood. In this study, seven trypsin genes related to S. litura development were characterized. Temporal-spatial expression results showed that the seven trypsin genes were predominantly expressed during the larval stage and mainl

Host-plant adaptation as a driver of incipient speciation in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda).

BACKGROUND: Divergent selection on host-plants is one of the main evolutionary forces driving ecological speciation in phytophagous insects. The ecological speciation might be challenging in the presence of gene flow and assortative mating because the direction of divergence is not necessarily the same between ecological selection (through host-plant adaptation) and assortative mating. The fall armyworm (FAW), a major lepidopteran pest species, is composed of two sympatric strains, corn and rice strains, named after two of their preferred host-plants. These two strains have been hypothesized t

Inheritance and fitness costs of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistance to spinosad in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda is a pest of economically important crops in South America. In Brazil, this species is considered the most destructive pest of maize. Use of spinosyn insecticides in insect resistance management (IRM) has been one strategy to control this pest. In this study, we selected a strain of S. frugiperda resistant to spinosad and evaluated the inheritance and fitness costs of the resistance. RESULTS: Estimated LC50 (concentration required to kill 50% of larvae) values were 0.011 and 9.80 µg cm-2 for the spinosad-susceptible (Sus) and -resistant (Spin-res) strains, re

Endogenous viral elements and PIWI gene evolution in Spodoptera: diversity, conservation, and piRNA production.

Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) are viral sequences that have integrated into host genomes. While these elements can be considered molecular fossils of past infections, in some cases, they are co-opted and contribute to host fitness. For instance, in arthropods, some EVEs derived from non-retro-transcribing RNA viruses (nrEVEs) generate PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), and in Aedes mosquitoes at least, they act as immune effectors. Here, we investigated the diversity and function of nrEVEs across four Spodoptera species (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), which are notorious agricultural pests. Comparat

Harnessing Multifunctional Bacillus thuringiensis for Plant Growth Promotion and Biocontrol Potential Against Spodoptera frugiperda.

Bacillus thuringiensis is the most widely used microbial bioinsecticide; however, only a few strains possess additional traits such as plant growth promotion and biocontrol potential. This study characterized 25 B. thuringiensis isolates obtained from soil and infected insect cadavers to identify multifunctional strains with insecticidal and plant growth-promoting (PGP) properties. Microscopic examination revealed diverse parasporal crystal morphologies, while 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed their identity with 99%-100% similarity to reference strains. Enzymatic profiling showed protease activit

Emamectin benzoate seed coating provides systemic protection of maize against fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda).

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a major invasive pest causing severe damage to maize. This study evaluated the efficacy of emamectin benzoate (EB) as a seed-coating insecticide and examined its systemic movement within maize plants. EB coatings did not affect seed germination or seedling vigor. Larval mortality was significantly higher in EB-treated plants, with PRIME GREEN G106 (PG)+EB at 0.5-1.0% producing 69-72% mortality at 20 days after germination. Leaf injury in treated plants remained below 25%, as compared with more than 40% in controls. Synchrotron FTIR (SR-FTIR) and pri

Characterization of Endogenous Retroviral-like Particles Expressed from the Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 Cell Line.

The Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 insect cell line is used in the baculovirus expression vector system for the development of various viral vaccines and some gene therapy products. Early studies indicated that Sf9 cells produced a reverse transcriptase (RT) activity that was detected using a sensitive PCR-enhanced reverse transcriptase (PERT) assay. Since RT is generally associated with retrovirus particles, we undertook the investigation of the physical properties and infectious nature of the extracellular RT activity that was constitutively expressed from Sf9 cells or induced after the chemical

pH-responsive nanoparticles for oral delivery of RNAi for sustained protection against Spodoptera exigua.

To enhance the RNAi efficiency of dsRNA against the Spodoptera exigua through a feeding method, we developed a pH-responsive nanoparticle, chitosan-polyethylene glycol-carboxyl (CS-PEG-COOH). This nanoparticle enhances RNAi efficiency by improving dsRNA stability in the midgut of S. exigua and can intelligently release dsRNA under alkaline conditions. Firstly, the CS-PEG-COOH carrier was prepared via cross-linking reactions, and the mass ratio of dsRNA to CS-PEG-COOH was obtained using electrophoretic mobility. The carrier composite materials were then characterized using isothermal titration

The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a major agricultural pest affecting crops like cotton, maize, tomatoes, and wheat across southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and western Asia. Whole genome analyses have revealed adaptive evolution in chemosensation and detoxification genes in S. littoralis. However, the extent of intraspecific diversity influenced by recent adaptive evolutionary forces remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a population genomics analysis using 31 S. littoralis individuals from sub-Saharan Africa, northern Africa, and southern
