Dogs are reservoir hosts of the zoonotic Dirofilaria sp. 'hongkongensis' and potentially of Brugia sp. Sri Lanka genotype in Sri Lanka.

In 2016, the World Health Organization declared Sri Lanka as having successfully eliminated lymphatic filariasis as a public health concern. However, in recent decades, several infections with subperiodic filarial species suggestive of zoonotic infections have been recorded across the country. The arthropod-borne filarioids Dirofilaria repens, Brugia malayi, Brugia ceylonensis, and Acanthocheilonema reconditum are historically known to be endemic in dogs in Sri Lanka. Despite this, limited information on the prevalence, diversity, and predictors of filarial infections in dogs in the country ha

RESULTS: The age of patients ranged from 3 months to 83 years (mean = 46 ± 21 years). The male-to-female ratio in the sample was 1:1.3. Among 654 histologically confirmed eyelid lesions, the majority (n = 407/654, 62%) were neoplastic lesions including 322 benign, 11 premalignant and 74 malignant neopl

Food allergy in Sri Lanka - A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of IgE mediated food allergy (FA) is increasing in the west. Cow's milk (CM), hen's egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish are responsible for 90% of food allergy in the west; however, local dietary habits may result in specific allergies. Data on food allergies in South Asia is scarce. The present study aims to evaluate the foods that cause immediate type hypersensitivity in Sri Lanka, and to compare with Asia and the developed west. METHODS: Records of patients referred to an Immunology clinic from 2010-January 2022 were reviewed. The diagnosis of f

A national survey of antibacterial consumption in Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Optimizing the use of antibacterial medicines is an accepted strategy to combat the antibacterial resistance. Availability of reliable antibacterial consumption (ABC) data is a prerequisite to implement this strategy. OBJECTIVES: To quantify and describe the national ABC in Sri Lanka and to examine any differences in the consumption between public and private sector. METHODS: The methodology for this survey was adapted from World Health Organization (WHO) methodology for a global programme on surveillance of antimicrobial consumption. Aggregate data on national consumption of s

Domestic violence and self-poisoning in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that domestic violence (DV) is an important risk factor for suicidal behaviour. The level of risk and its contribution to the overall burden of suicidal behaviour among men and women has not been quantified in South Asia. We carried out a large case-control study to examine the association between DV and self-poisoning in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Cases (N = 291) were patients aged ⩾18 years, admitted to a tertiary hospital in Kandy Sri Lanka for self-poisoning. Sex and age frequency matched controls were recruited from the hospital's outpatient department (

The Economic Impact of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease which affects mainly the poorest communities in developing countries. Considering the limited published information on economic impact of CL in Sri Lanka, the current study was conducted with the objective of revealing the nature and magnitude of the economic impact of CL in three selected disease endemic regions in Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka. The patient records of CL notified of relevant Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office during 2013- 2016 were obtained. Patient households were visited and data collection was done using an

Health status, trends, and issues in Sri Lanka.

It is widely recognized that better health is a prerequisite for the overall economic and social development of a nation. Sri Lanka, like many other countries experiencing the epidemiological transition, will have to make effective decisions on health-care service management and the development of education and training programs for health-care professionals. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current health service administration, health status, trends and issues, and health financing and resource allocation in Sri Lanka. The review revealed that Sri Lanka has achieved a relatively

[Chronic diarrhea after a journey to Sri Lanka].

A 51-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of chronic diarrhea. She had spent a 14 day vacation in Sri Lanka three years ago. The clinical examination of the patient was unremarkable. Values for protein, iron, zinc, copper and folic acid were decreased and the Shilling- and D-xylose tests revealed pathological results. Gliadin and Endomysium antibodies were not detectable. Histologic examination of the duodenum displayed chronic duodenitis with increased epithelial regeneration and villous atrophy. In the MRI a segment of the mid small bowel with increased thickness of the intestinal wall

[Tropical eosinophilia in a man from Sri Lanka].

A 21-year-old man from Sri Lanka came to Japan in August 1992 and worked as a painter. He had often complained of dyspnea on exertion before coming to Japan. He was admitted to Ogaki Municipal Hospital in June 1993 for further examination of persistent coughing, dyspnea, and fever. A chest X-ray film showed bilateral diffuse reticulonodular shadows. Blood examinations revealed marked eosinophilia (9440/mm3) with elevation of the serum IgE level (4982 IU/ml). IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed a high titer against Dirofilaria immitis. Microfilaria were not detected in blood sampled at

Is violence against men a problem in Sri Lanka?

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) among men is a universally present phenomenon that is mostly unacknowledged. The relative lack of research in this area leads to a deficiency of evidence ascribing due recognition to GBV among men. This, in turn, leads to not identifying it as a social problem, hence, poor development of resources for victims as well as poor help-seeking behaviour patterns are prevalent, especially in Southeast Asia. AIMS: We aimed to determine the prevalence of GBV among men in Colombo, Sri Lanka. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional analytical community survey was c

The Diversity of Human Dirofilariasis in Western Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Human dirofilariasis is an emerging zoonosis in many countries. Dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens may present with diverse clinical manifestations in humans due to aberrant localization of worm lesions causing diagnostic dilemmas. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe and update the demography and clinical spectrum of human dirofilariasis in western Sri Lanka. Nematode or nematode fragments isolated from excision biopsies that were confirmed as D. repens at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, between 2012 a

Spectrum of primary immunodeficiency disorders in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: While primary immunodeficiencies (PID has been recognized in the west for decades, recognition has been delayed in the third world. This study attempts to detail the spectrum of PID, the therapy provided, and constraints in the diagnosis and treatment in a middle income country such as Sri Lanka. METHODS: Nine hundred and forty two patients with recurrent infections and features suggestive of immune deficiency, referred from the entire country in a 4 year period, to the sole immunology unit in Sri Lanka were included.
