The possibility of using electrically induced stapedius reflexes as a means of objective hearing evaluation was investigated in the rabbit as an animal model. The contralateral stapedius reflex to acoustic and electrical stimulation was measured in anesthetized rabbits. Stapedius reflex can provide useful prognostic information in FPs when the middle ear is normal. Its preservation may have a favorable significance in partial FP and Bell's palsy. Its loss, even though less reliable, can also have some value as an indicator for a poor prognosis in patients with total and herpes zoster FPs. Most importantly, our findings have shown that the SR alone is not sufficient to be of prognostic value, but is useful if combined with other clinical parameters and electrical responses.

Stapedius reflex testing was utilized to monitor the progression of subclinical otosclerosis and evaluate the efficacy of NaF treatment in stabilizing the disease process. The investigation was performed on 93 relatives of patients suffering with surgically confirmed otosclerosis. Subjects were divided into two groups. The material consisted of 195 operated otosclerotic ears. In 101 ears the stapedial tendon was left intact and in 94 ears it was divided. The follow-up period was approximately 8.0 years. Eight patients with dystrophia myotonica (Steinert) were studied. They all had myotonia and pathological EMG and in some cases other signs of the disease. The contraction of the stapedius muscle results in a frequency dependant attenuation of sound through the middle ear. Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis (Bell's palsy) usually results in a paralysis of the stapedius muscle. In 15 normal-hearing persons a number of stapedius reflex responses 10 dB above individual reflex threshold has been measured and recorded. The stapedius reflex (SR), its adaptation and the brainstem auditory evoked potential (ABR) were recorded in a group of 53 multiple sclerosis patients. All cases were classified as definite according to Schumacher's criteria, and their grade of disability in Hyllested's system was 1-4: no cases of the gravest (grades 5 and 6) disability were included in the series. Sixty-one juvenile, insulin-treated diabetics below 50 years of age with a duration of diabetes mellitus longer than 10 years underwent impedance audiometry with determination of stapedius reflex thresholds at 500 Hz, 1, 2, and 4 kHz, conventional pure tone and speech audiometry, and high-frequency audiometry up to 20 kHz. Our goal was to investigate the postoperative differences in hearing between patients who had their stapedius tendon sacrificed and those whose stapedius tendon was preserved during laser stapes surgery for otosclerosis. There has been little exploration of the mechanisms by which stapedius muscle contractions reduce the masking of responses to high-frequency sounds by low-frequency sounds. Ossification of the stapedial tendon is a very rare cause of conductive hearing loss. In addition to a review of the literature, two further cases of unilateral hearing impairment are reported. In both cases, division of the ossified tendon led to a complete disappearance of the middle-ear problem. Apart from middle ear malformations, infections of the middle ear may also give rise to ossification of the stapedial tendon.

We measured the mean latency of the stapedius reflex by normal listeners. We observed a prolongation of the latency by patients with operative and histological confirmed neurinoma of the VIII. nerve. The fatiguability of the acoustic stapedius muscle reflex in an actual noisy industrial environment was investigated in normal-hearing subjects. In a laboratory situation a small depression was found with a considerable individual variability. The stapedius reflex recovered slowly, approximately as a linear function of time. In a field study on an entire day of exposure in a ship-building yard the reflex depression was on the average 4 dB in response to a stimulation of 2000 Hz 10 min after the end of the workday. This corresponds to less than 8 dB immediately at the end of the exposure.
