American journal of diseases of children (1960)1978eng
Numerous complications have been reported as a result of neonatal circumcision. We describe here three cases of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome that were thought to be due to infected circumcisions. A review of the literature failed to disclose descriptions of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome as such a complication. In spite of recent American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations against routine circumcision, it will continue to be a common procedure. Careful preoperative and postoperative screening and guidance are urged to prevent staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and other comp

Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are leading pathogens of biofilm-related infections and represent the most common cause of osteomyelitis and biomedical implants infections. Biofilm-related infections usually require long-term antibiotic treatment, often associated to surgical interventions. Dalbavancin is a newer lipoglycopeptide approved for the treatment of acute skin and skin-structure infections caused by Gram-positive pathogens. In addition, dalbavancin has recently been considered as a potential option for the treatment of staphylococcal osteomyelitis and orthopedic

The development of modern antibiotics has vastly improved the therapy of cutaneous bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus. This organism and beta-haemolytic streptococci are the most common cutaneous pathogens. A growing body of evidence suggests that proteins from S. aureus and some strains of streptococci can act as superantigens and cause polyclonal T-cell activation by binding directly to antigen-presenting cells. This process is a likely explanation of Kawasaki's syndrome as well as staphylococcal and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Sudden aggravation

BACKGROUND: Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a pore-forming toxin secreted by some Staphylococcus aureus strains and associated with skin and soft tissue infections; these strains are epidemiologically associated with current outbreaks of community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and with necrotizing pneumonia in healthy adults in USA and Europe. This study was performed to investigate the presence of PVL-positive S. aureus and the significant infections known to be caused by this organism.
METHODS: A total of 573 strains of S. aureus blood isolates at university-affiliate

Intensive observations on 37 children in a population with endemic skin infections provided an opportunity to study the interrelationships between and the significance of the bacterial genera commonly associated with impetigo. Cultures of the respiratory tract, three normal skin sites, and lesions, when present, were taken three times weekly from July to October 1969. Impetigo developed in all 37 children. Group A streptococci alone were recovered from 21% of 361 lesions, Staphylococcus aureus alone from 8%, Staphylococcus epidermidis alone from 5% and mixtures of streptococci and staphylococc

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is an exfoliative skin eruption associated with specific exotoxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Affliction of adults is considerably rare, and most such patients have pre-disposing co-morbidities. A unique such infection of an immunocompetent adult without risk factors is detailed. Current concepts of disease process and treatment are highlighted for staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome among adults.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common and often virulent pathogen in humans. This bacterium is widespread, being present on the skin and in the nose of healthy people. Staphylococcus aureus can cause infections with severe outcomes ranging from pustules to sepsis and death. The introduction of antibiotics led to a general belief that the problem of bacterial infections would be solved. Nonetheless, pathogens including staphylococci have evolved mechanisms of drug resistance. Among current attempts to address this problem, phage therapy offers a promising alternative to combat staphylococcal infect

This study retrospectively reviewed all pediatric cases of staphylococcal scarlet fever (SSF) that occurred during a 10-year period in a 1400-bed tertiary medical center in northern Taiwan. All 20 cases of SSF occurred in previously healthy individuals. Skin and soft-tissue infections predominated among children from whom Staphylococcus aureus was isolated. Polymerase chain reaction testing was used to detect known staphylococcal toxin genes, and of the isolates studied, most (18 [90%] of 20) contained only the staphylococcal enterotoxin B. One of the other strains was positive for staphylococ

The appearance and increasing prevalence of methicillin-resistant and multidrug-resistant staphylococcal skin infections has necessitated a change in how those infections are treated. Topical antibacterial treatments have evolved from elective adjunctive therapy to a more essential part of the treatment plan. This article reviews the ingredients and vehicles available for aggressive topical antibacterial treatment and prevention of Staphylococcus skin infections. Additionally, the basic tenets of improving client compliance and product efficacy are outlined.

A twenty-eight-year-old woman seropositive for the human immunodeficiency virus and undergoing hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease sustained an infection of her arteriovenous graft. Multiple erythematous erosions appeared and a diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome was made when a frozen section of a fresh skin peel revealed an intraepidermal split through the granular layer and Staphylococcus aureus group II, phage type 71 was cultured from the wound and blood. Twenty-six cases of adult patients with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome have been reported. Although this inclu

Systemic fungal infections are being recognized with increasing frequency in extremely premature neonates. We report two such infants with late-onset mixed infection with Staphylococcal species and unusual fungi. These cases are of interest in view of recent reports on the interaction of Staphylococcal cell wall components and neutrophils, as damaged skin sites could form a nidus and portal of entry for saprophytic fungal pathogens. It is also important to consider fungal infection as a possibility in sick premature infants with necrotic skin lesions even when the systemic signs have an altern

Previous epidemiologic studies of staphylococcal infections in newborn infants and surgical patients provide clues to the method of infection in toxic shock syndrome. In newborn infants, staphylococci were shown to be transmitted most often by the hands of nursery personnel to the umbilical stump, which afforded a warm, moist milieu for bacterial growth. Studies indicated that many surgical wound infections were due to the patients' own organisms, which were carried into the operating room on the patient's skin. It is hypothesized that in toxic shock syndrome the tampon becomes contaminated wi

Staphylococcus intermedius skin infection (pyoderma) may be perpetuated in some dogs by a hypersensitivity reaction to staphylococcal organisms. Dogs with idiopathic superficial or deep recurrent staphylococcal skin infections may thus have quantitative differences in serum antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies compared with healthy dogs. To test this hypothesis, antistaphylococcal IgG and IgE antibodies were measured by ELISA in groups of dogs with idiopathic recurrent pyoderma, recurrent pyoderma secondary to atopic disease, non-recurrent pyoderma, and in healthy dogs. All groups of dogs with pr

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive pathogen that is capable of infecting almost every organ in the human body. Alarmingly, the rapid emergence of methicillin-resistant S.aureus strains (MRSA) jeopardizes the available treatment options. Herein, we propose sustainable, low-cost production of recombinant lysostaphin (rLST), which is a native bacteriocin destroying the staphylococcal cell wall through its endopeptidase activity. We combined the use of E. coli BL21(DE3)/pET15b, factorial design, and simple Ni-NTA affinity chromatography to optimize rLST production. The enzyme yield was up to

Netherton syndrome (NS) is a severe autosomal recessive ichthyosis. It is characterized by congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, trichorrhexis invaginata, ichthyosis linearis circumflexa, atopic diathesis and frequent bacterial infections. Pathogenic mutations in SPINK5 have recently been identified in NS. SPINK5 encodes lymphoepithelial Kazal-type-related inhibitor (LEKTI), a new type of serine protease inhibitor involved in the regulation of skin barrier formation and immunity. We report two Taiwanese brothers with NS. The patients had typical manifestations of NS with an atopic diathesis a

Autosomal dominant hyper-IgE syndrome (AD-HIES) is an inborn error of immunity (IEI) caused by a dominant-negative mutation in the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT 3). This disease is characterized by chronic eczematoid dermatitis, recurrent staphylococcal skin abscesses, pneumonia, pneumatoceles, and extremely high serum IgE levels. Loss-of-function STAT3 mutations may also result in distinct non-immunologic features such as dental, facial, skeletal, and vascular abnormalities, central nervous system malformations and an increased risk for bone fractures. Prophylactic

Many of the dermatologic conditions for which children seek medical attention are caused by infectious organisms. Several medications have recently become available or are on the horizon for the treatment of pediatric skin infections and infestations. Treatment of tinea capitis with fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine, antibiotic therapy for staphylococcal skin infections, cidofovir for the treatment of verrucae vulgaris and molluscum contagiosum and ivermectin for scabies and head lice are discussed.

Scarlet fever consists in a diffuse exanthem associated with mucous changes. Classical scarlet fever is rare now, but other severe streptococcal infections have become more frequent, such as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. The scarlatiniform exanthem and the shock observed in this disease are due to a streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin. Exfoliative toxins secreted by Staphylococcus aureus are responsible for the tender erythema and cutaneous scaling characteristic of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome of infancy. The so-called staphylococcal scarlet fever is probably an attenuated variant

BACKGROUND: Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) with a history of eczema herpeticum have increased staphylococcal colonization and infections. However, whether Staphylococcus aureus alters the outcome of skin viral infection has not been determined.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether S aureus toxins modulated host response to herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and vaccinia virus (VV) infections in normal human keratinocytes (NHKs) and in murine infection models.
METHODS: NHKs were treated with S aureus toxins before incubation of viruses. BALB/c mice were inoculated with S aureus 2 days before VV
