Laboratory and clinical characteristics of Staphylococcus lugdunensis prosthetic joint infections.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus that has several similarities to Staphylococcus aureus. S. lugdunensis is increasingly being recognized as a cause of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The goal of the present retrospective cohort study was to determine the laboratory and clinical characteristics of S. lugdunensis PJIs seen at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2007. Kaplan-Meier survival methods and Wilcoxon sum-rank analysis were used to determine the cumulative incidence of treatment success and assess subset comparisons.

Clinical Significance and Microbiological Characteristics of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in Cutaneous Infections.

Background/Objectives:Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) commonly found on human skin. Unlike other CoNS, S. lugdunensis has a notable potential to cause severe infections comparable to Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and microbiological profile of patients with S. lugdunensis skin infections at a single center. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patient records from the Dermatology Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece, covering the period from January 2014 to January 2024. Patients'

Orthopedic implant infections: Incompetence of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, and Enterococcus faecalis to invade osteoblasts.

Septic failure is still the major complication of prosthetic implants. Entering host cells, bacteria hide from host immune defenses, shelter from extracellular antibiotics, and cause chronic infection. Staphylococcus aureus, the leading etiologic agent of orthopedic implant infections, is able to enter bone cells and induce osteoblast apoptosis, osteoclast recruitment, and highly destructive osteomyelitis. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, and Enterococcus faecalis are opportunistic pathogens causative of implant-related infections. This study investigated the ability to

High-Grade Staphylococcus lugdunensis Bacteremia in a Patient on Home Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S lugdunensis) is a species of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and a constituent of human skin flora. S lugdunensis has gained notoriety for its virulence, which resembles Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus). S lugdunensis is now recognized as an important nosocomial pathogen and cause of prosthetic device infections, including vascular catheter infections. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man with a history of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease on home hemodialysis via arteriovenous fistula (AVF) presented to the emergency

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Bacteremia with an Infected Aortic Thrombus in a Preterm Infant.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a rare cause of late-onset sepsis in preterm infants. To our best knowledge, we report the fourth case of a male preterm infant who developed fulminant late-onset sepsis due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis with persistent bacteremia secondary to an infected aortic thrombus confirmed with two positive blood cultures. Our patient was an extremely low birth weight growth-restricted infant born at 27 weeks gestation and initially required an umbilical arterial catheter for blood pressure and blood gas monitoring. The course of this neonate was complicated by severe resp

Staphylococcus lugdunensis sepsis and endocarditis in a newborn following lotus birth.

A term newborn, who underwent lotus birth, developed Staphylococcus lugdunensis sepsis and endocarditis on the 1st day of life. This case reports an uncommon pathogen known to cause destructive endocarditis in the adult and paediatric populations, causing endocarditis in a neonate. We speculate that lotus birth, an atypical birthing practice, may have contributed to the development of this infection.

Frequency, clinical manifestations, and outcomes of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Bacteremia in children.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) is known as a common cause of clinically significant infections in adults although the clinical importance of S. lugdunensis isolates from pediatric samples is less known. The aim of this study is to assess the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of S. lugdunensis bacteremia (SLB) in children. METHODS: From January 2009 to March 2014, all blood culture isolates were retrospectively screened for S. lugdunensis. We analyzed the isolates for antimicrobial susceptibility and patients who had developed SLB by reviewing the electronic med

Clinical and Microbiological Aspects of β-Lactam Resistance in Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Antimicrobial susceptibility results from broth microdilution MIC testing of 993 Staphylococcus lugdunensis isolates recovered from patients at a tertiary care medical center from 2008 to 2015 were reviewed. Ninety-two oxacillin-susceptible isolates were selected to assess the accuracy of penicillin MIC testing, the penicillin disk diffusion test, and three β-lactamase tests, including the cefoxitin-induced nitrocefin test, penicillin cloverleaf assay, and penicillin disk zone edge test. The results of all phenotypic tests were compared to the results of blaZ PCR. The medical records of 62 pat

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Septic Arthritis of a Native Knee A Case Report.

A 67-year-old man presented to orthopaedic care with a painful knee. Workup was consistent with septic arthritis of a native knee, and the patient underwent operative treatment. Cultures from the operating room were speciated to Staphylococcus lugdunensis. To the investigators' knowledge, this is the first reported S. lugdunensis infection in a peripheral joint in the absence of an orthopaedic prosthesis. Although traditionally associated with infectious endocarditis, S. lugdunensis has been identified as a causative agent in many organ systems, including orthopaedic infections. This case repo

[Detection of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in clinical specimens and their sensitivity to antimicrobial agents].

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a newly recognised coagulase-negative staphylococcus species, pathogenic for humans. Following patients' records over a 25 month period, we revealed 25 cultures positive for S. lugdunensis. Most of the samples were from infected wounds or abscesses in patients suffering from angiopathies of lower limbs, late complications of diabetes. SL was also isolated from a chronic breast abscess and ascites in another patient with liver cirrhosis. In five cases we understood the isolate as normal skin flora or colonising organism mostly in mixed culture. Resistance to penici

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Endocarditis Presenting with Brain Abscesses and Temporal Vision Deficits.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacterium (CoNS) that colonizes the skin. While infectious endocarditis (IE) caused by S. lugdunensis is rare, it is noteworthy because it has been associated with an aggressive clinical course. In this report, we present a case of culture-negative IE complicated by brain abscesses, vision deficits, and progressive heart failure that ultimately required mitral valve replacement. The causative agent was eventually identified as S. lugdunensis through molecular testing of valvular tissue.

Protracted Course of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Septic Arthritis in Native Knee Joint.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative bacteria of the Staphylococcus family. It is a highly invasive organism with similar virulence to Staphylococcus aureus. It is commonly associated with bacteremia and infections of the skin, soft tissues, joints, and bones. Those with indwelling medical devices are at the highest risk of infection due to biofilm formation. Instances of native joint infections are exceedingly rare. We describe a case of a 72-year-old female with multiple comorbidities presenting with native right knee joint septic arthritis from S. lugdunensis. Due to treatment

Recurrent Multivalvular Staphylococcus Lugdunensis Endocarditis Causing Complete Heart Block after TAVR.

Prosthetic valve endocarditis after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (PVE after TAVR) is a feared complication most often observed during the early postprocedural period. We report a case of severe, multivalvular PVE after TAVR with complete heart block caused by an uncommon organism. A 78-year-old female with prior Streptococcus agalactiae mitral valve endocarditis treated with antibiotics presented one year later with severe, symptomatic aortic insufficiency. She subsequently underwent TAVR given high surgical risk. Six weeks post-TAVR, she presented with syncope, fever, and complete h

Staphylococcus lugdunensis: a neglected pathogen of infections involving fracture-fixation devices.

PURPOSE: Cases of fracture-fixation device infection involving Staphylococcus lugdunensis are not frequent. The clinical characteristics and the choice of treatment strategies of these infections are not obviously known to date. METHODS: We performed a review of fracture-fixation device infection involving S. lugdunensis managed by our centres. RESULTS: Among the 38 cases of fracture-fixation device infection involving S. lugdunensis, 53% were located in the tibia. Most of our cases (87%) were chronic infections. Purulent discharge, which occurred in 79% of cases, was the most frequent clini

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis carrying SCCmec type V misidentified as MRSA.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a rare cause of severe infections and clinical manifestations are similar to those related to S. aureus infection. We describe a hospital-acquired bacteremia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis, misidentified as methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The oxacillin MIC was 16 µg/mL and the mecA gene and SCCmec type V were determined by PCR. Although treatment had been appropriated, the patient died after rapid progressive respiratory failure and another nosocomial sepsis. It is important not only to identify S. lugdunensis in view of its clinical cour

Multiple mycotic aneurysms reveal Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis in a young patient.

Mycotic aneurysms are rare, and depending on their location, can threaten functional prognosis. We report on a 17-year-old girl with no previous history of cardiovascular or infectious disease, referred to our Department of Cardiology with right hemiplegia and aphasia. A neurological evaluation revealed thrombosis of a mycotic cerebral aneurysm, complicated by ischemic and hemorrhagic infarction. Transthoracic echocardiography indicated huge, highly mobile mitral vegetation associated with a mitral regurgitation with a triple stream. Hemocultures isolated Staphylococcus lugdunensis.
