Comparison of intraosseous pentobarbital administration and thoracic compression for euthanasia of anesthetized sparrows (Passer domesticus) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

OBJECTIVE To compare intraosseous pentobarbital treatment (IPT) and thoracic compression (TC) on time to circulatory arrest and an isoelectric electroencephalogram (EEG) in anesthetized passerine birds. ANIMALS 30 wild-caught adult birds (17 house sparrows [Passer domesticus] and 13 European starlings [Sturnus vulgaris]). PROCEDURES Birds were assigned to receive IPT or TC (n = 6/species/group). Birds were anesthetized, and carotid arterial pulses were monitored by Doppler methodology. Five subdermal braided-wire electrodes were used for EEG. Anesthetic depth was adjusted until a continuous EE

Effects of restricted basilar papillar lesions and hair cell regeneration on auditory forebrain frequency organization in adult European starlings.

The frequency organization of neurons in the forebrain Field L complex (FLC) of adult starlings was investigated to determine the effects of hair cell (HC) destruction in the basal portion of the basilar papilla (BP) and of subsequent HC regeneration. Conventional microelectrode mapping techniques were used in normal starlings and in lesioned starlings either 2 d or 6-10 weeks after aminoglycoside treatment. Histological examination of the BP and recordings of auditory brainstem evoked responses confirmed massive loss of HCs in the basal portion of the BP and hearing losses at frequencies >2 k

Venous congestion from a vascular waterfall perspective: reframing congestion as a dynamic Starling resistor phenomenon.

The vascular waterfall phenomenon, rooted in Starling resistor principles, describes how blood flow becomes independent of downstream pressure when intraluminal pressure falls below a critical closing pressure (Pcrit). This review first introduces the classic arterial vascular waterfall, where local Pcrit enables organ-specific autoregulation of blood flow despite varying metabolic demands. Building on this framework, we extend the concept to the venous side, where similar mechanisms govern venous return and protect against congestion. The pulmonary vascular waterfall serves as a prototype, il

Existence of the Frank-Starling mechanism in the failing human heart. Investigations on the organ, tissue, and sarcomere levels.

BACKGROUND: The Frank-Starling mechanism is one of the most important physiological principles for regulation of contractile performance. We therefore studied the question of whether this mechanism may be absent or attenuated in end-stage failing human left ventricular myocardium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Different methodological approaches were used to analyze the effects of this mechanism on the organ, tissue, and sarcomere levels: (1) In excised human whole left ventricles (2 donor hearts, 5 failing hearts), diastolic and systolic pressure-volume relationships were obtained. (2) In isolated mu

Characterization of covalent binding of [14C]-2-chloro-4-acetotoluidide to microsomes of starling liver and kidney.

In this study, we have characterized the covalent binding of [14C]-2-chloro-4-acetotoluidide (CAT) radioactivity to microsomes of starling liver and kidney. The maximal velocity (Vmax) of covalent binding and apparent Michaelis constant (Km) for both tissues were similar. The Vmax for liver and kidney were 52.8 and 68.9 pmol/min/mg protein, and the apparent Kms were 0.54 and 0.87 mM, respectively. The covalent binding of radioactivity to heat-denatured microsomes of liver and kidney was reduced by 62% and 15%, respectively. Incubation at 0 degrees C reduced the binding by 80% to liver and 70%

The nerves of the accessory pancreatic ducts of the common starling (Sturnus vulgaris): an ultrastructural and light microscopic study.

An ultrastructural and light microscopic study was undertaken to examine the nerves of the accessory pancreatic ducts of the starling (Sturnus vulgaris), previously noted (Vinnicombe, 1982) to have a particularly dense innervation. Large numbers of nerves were found in the ducts, predominantly in the lamina propria, and all contained exclusively unmyelinated axons. Probable neuron cell bodies were observed in the smooth muscle layer, but not in the lamina propria. Schwann cells invested all the axons, and these displayed terminal swellings in a 'synapse en passage' arrangement. The nerves of t

European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) As Sentinels of Urban Air Pollution: A Comprehensive Approach from Noninvasive to Post Mortem Investigation.

Urban, traffic-related air pollution remains a concern to health-care and environmental professionals, with mounting evidence connecting diverse disease conditions with exposure. Wildlife species such as European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) cohabit urban neighborhoods and may serve as sentinels for these contaminants. In this novel approach, we use passive, personal-type air samplers to provide site-specific measurements of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes, or BTEX), and account for the effec

Behavioural response of European starlings exposed to video playback of conspecific flocks: effect of social context and predator threat.

We studied the behavioural response of European starlings to a socially mediated predation event. Adult starlings were exposed to either a video of a flock attacked by a peregrine falcon or a video of a flock not under attack. We investigated whether the social condition affected the anti-predator response under the hypothesis that in such a gregarious species singletons would increase their anti-predator behaviour more than individuals in groups, to compensate for potential increased risk. The video of the flock under attack caused an increase in immobility and vigilance, more marked in singl

Plasma prolactin and luteinizing hormone during termination and onset of photorefractoriness in intact and pinealectomized European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

Plasma levels of prolactin and luteinizing hormone have been examined in intact and pinealectomized European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) during termination and onset of photorefractoriness. Photorefractory starlings exposed to long (18L:6D) daily photoperiods for 10 weeks were pinealectomized. One week after pinealectomy these birds, along with the intact and sham-operated birds, were transferred to short (8L:16D) daily photoperiods. After 10 weeks on short day lengths the daily photoperiod was switched to long (18L:6D) and the birds remained on this regime for a further 10 weeks. Plasma prola

Ultrastructural evidence for changes in synaptic input to the hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone neurons in photosensitive and photorefractory starlings.

Neural input to the hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons was investigated in male starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) using electron microscopy combined with immunocytochemistry. Birds (4 to 6 in each group) were sampled at four stages of a photoperiodically induced reproductive cycle: (a) sexually immature but photosensitive, under short days; (b) during sexual maturation after 7 to 25 long days; (c) during gonadal regression after 35 to 50 long days; and (d) when fully photorefractory after 11 months exposure to long days. The length of the perikaryal membrane, the numb

Transvascular and intravascular fluid transport in the rainbow trout: revisiting Starling's forces, the secondary circulation and interstitial compliance.

The kinetics of transvascular fluid transport across fish capillaries and redistribution of fluids between intravascular compartments in intact fish are unknown. Cannulae were placed in the dorsal aorta (DA) and caudal vein (CV) of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (mass 0.45-0.85 kg) and the fish spleenectomized. The following day a peristaltic pump was fitted to complete the extracorporeal arterio-venous circulation. Hematocrit (Hct) was monitored in unanesthetized fish either manually, by collecting blood from the extracorporeal loop at 5 min intervals for a period of 1 h (groups 1 and 2),

Ability to predict irregular periods of food depriviation improves body-weight regulation and reduces weight gain in food-insecure starlings.

Food insecurity is associated with higher body weight in humans and other species, but the causal effect of unpredictable food availability on weight gain is unknown. We measured food intake and weight in starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exposed to repeated irregular periods of food deprivation. We manipulated the predictability of deprivation between subjects with a 1 h visual cue that either reliably preceded deprivation (Predictable group) or was uncorrelated with deprivation (Unpredictable group). During the cue, Predictable birds reduced their food intake and spent less time inactive, indicat

The Role of European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) in the Dissemination of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli among Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

Antimicrobial use in livestock production is a driver for the development and proliferation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Wildlife interactions with livestock, acquiring associated AMR bacteria and genes, and wildlife's subsequent dispersal across the landscape are hypothesized to play an important role in the ecology of AMR. Here, we examined priority AMR phenotypes and genotypes of Escherichia coli isolated from the gastrointestinal tracts of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) found on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). European starlings may be present in high numbers o

Social cues regulate reciprocal switching of hypothalamic Dio2/Dio3 and the transition into final follicle maturation in European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

With final maturation of ovarian follicles, birds are committed to a major energetic investment: egg laying. Follicles develop in a 2-step process: 1) initial development of regressed follicles stimulated by long days and 2) yolk incorporation into hierarchical follicles, ovulation, and oviposition. We know little about how females transduce environmental cues into neuroendocrine signals regulating the second step. The present study measures gene expression in tissues within the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Females were housed in seminatural enclosures experiencing natural changes in ph

The classical Starling resistor model often does not predict inspiratory airflow patterns in the human upper airway.

The upper airway is often modeled as a classical Starling resistor, featuring a constant inspiratory airflow, or plateau, over a range of downstream pressures. However, airflow tracings from clinical sleep studies often show an initial peak before the plateau. To conform to the Starling model, the initial peak must be of small magnitude or dismissed as a transient. We developed a method to simulate fast or slow inspirations through the human upper airway, to test the hypothesis that this initial peak is a transient. Eight subjects [4 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), 4 controls] slept in an "iron

Zero Salmonella prevalence found in common starlings Sturnus vulgaris captured in Danish cattle sheds on farms infected with Salmonella enterica Dublin.

Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin is host-specific to cattle, causing severe symptoms and economically impacting milk herds. Despite an eradication programme in Denmark, levels of infection have not decreased and suspicion has fallen on the common starling Sturnus vulgaris as a potential vector between herds. The number of breeding starlings in Denmark declined by 60% between 1976 and 2015, a trend correlated with decreases in the number of cattle grazing outside. Ironically, more starlings are now coming into Danish cattle sheds to feed on maize silage outside the breeding season, so it is i

Distinct patterns of gene expression in the medial preoptic area are related to gregarious singing behavior in European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

BACKGROUND: Song performed in flocks by European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), referred to here as gregarious song, is a non-sexual, social behavior performed by adult birds. Gregarious song is thought to be an intrinsically reinforced behavior facilitated by a low-stress, positive affective state that increases social cohesion within a flock. The medial preoptic area (mPOA) is a region known to have a role in the production of gregarious song. However, the neurochemical systems that potentially act within this region to regulate song remain largely unexplored. In this study, we used RNA seque
