An interactive and realistic phantom for cricothyroidotomy simulation of a patient with obesity through a reusable design using 3D-printing and Arduino.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Proper airway management during emergencies can prevent serious complications. However, cricothyroidotomy is challenging in patients with obesity. Since this technique is not performed frequently but at a critical time, the opportunity for trainees is rare. Simulators for these procedures are also lacking. Therefore, we proposed a realistic and interactive cricothyroidotomy simulator. METHODS: All anatomical structures were modeled based on computed tomography images of a patient with obesity. To mimic the feeling of incision during cricothyroidotomy, the incision s

Maxillofacial rehabilitation of an acid attack survivor - The journey from scar to smile.

Acid attack is a form of violent assault involving the act of throwing acid or any corrosive substance such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid with the intention to disfigure, maim, torture, or kill. A combination of surgical intervention along with prosthetic management using maxillofacial prosthesis serves a good treatment modality for rehabilitation in such cases. The advent of technological advancements has made the rehabilitation procedure easier, faster, and comfortable both for the patient and prosthodontist.

The value of stereolithographic models for preoperative diagnosis of craniofacial deformities and planning of surgical corrections.

The purpose of this study was to assess the importance of stereolithographic models (SLMs) for preoperative diagnosis and planning in craniofacial surgery and to examine whether these models offer valuable additional information as compared to normal CT scans and 3D CT images. Craniofacial SLMs of 20 patients with craniomaxillofacial pathology were made. A helical volume CT scan of the anatomic area involved delivered the necessary data for their construction. These were built with an SLA 250 stereolithography apparatus (3D-Systems, Valencia, CA, USA), steered by FORM-IT/DCS software (Universi

Computer-Aided Three-Dimensional Virtual Surgical Planning in Complex Skull Base Reconstruction for Sphenoid Wing Dysplasia in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Unilateral sphenoid dysplasia is a rare but distinctive manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1, causing pulsatile exophthalmos, decreased vision, and facial deformity. Surgical intervention is required to prevent visual deterioration. However, the reconstruction of a complex cranial base defect while fulfilling cosmetic needs is challenging. The asymmetric anatomy impedes identification and preservation of vital structures, and the use of bone grafts is often unsustainable due to resorption. Here we demonstrate a multimodal technique combining mirror-image-based virtual surgical planning, s

Stereolithographic Rapid Prototyping of Clear, Foldable, Non-Refractive Intraocular Lens Designs: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

PURPOSE: A cataract is a cloudy area in the crystalline lens. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness and the second cause of severe vision impairment worldwide. During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is extracted and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, which restores the optical power. The fabrication of intraocular lenses using existing molding and lathing techniques is a complex and time-consuming process that limits the development of novel materials and designs. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a stereolithography-based process for producing models of cle

Outcome of Autotransplantation of Mature Third Molars Using 3-dimensional-printed Guiding Templates and Donor Tooth Replicas.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Autotransplantation exhibits a number of advantages compared with other treatment options (ie, dental implants or fixed partial prostheses), such as greater resistance to occlusal loading, maintenance of the periodontal ligament and surrounding bone, and the potential for better esthetics. The aim of this study was to determine clinical outcomes for autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation using 3-dimensional-printed guiding templates and tooth replicas. Twenty-seven third molars with completely formed roots were autotransplanted. Each donor tooth and recipient site were examined cl

Predictability of anterior open bite treatment with Invisalign.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite correction with Invisalign has been claimed to have relatively good predictability because of the proposed function of clear aligners to function as occlusal bite-blocks, limiting extrusion of the posterior teeth or possibly even intruding posterior teeth. This proposal, however, remains relatively unsubstantiated. The objective of this study was to investigate and determine the accuracy of Invisalign treatment in correcting anterior open bite by comparing the predicted outcome from ClinCheck to the achieved outcome for the initial aligner sequence. METHODS: A

Microfabrication of Gelatin Methacrylate/Hydroxyapatite Composites by Utilizing Alternate Soaking Process.

To construct a complex three-dimensional (3D) structure mimicking bone microstructure, hydrogel models of polymerized gelatin methacrylate (pGelMA) were fabricated by using stereolithography and modified with hydroxyapatite (HAp) via an alternate soaking process (ASP) using a solution of calcium and phosphate ions. Fabricated pGelMA line models whose widths were designed as 100, 300, and 600 μm were modified with HAp by ASP by changing the immersion time and number of cycles. After ASP, all of the line models with widths of 100, 300, and 600 μm were successfully modified with HAp, and large am

Large-scale manufacturing of precisely patterned flexible soft tissue implants with high porosity.

As improvements in material compatibility are achieved, stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing allows for the prototyping of soft tissue constructs with high reproducibility and precision. To streamline the Food and Drug Administration approval process, clinical-grade manufacturing must be validated. Here, we present a manufacturing process and post-manufacturing analysis for soft-tissue implants used to reconstruct the nipple-areolar complex (NAC). The NAC is a specialized soft tissue structure that influences aesthetic outcomes in breast reconstruction. Physiologically-sized NAC implants were d

Development and technical evaluation of a reusable 3D-printed cytospin funnel for enlarged cytospin generation.

OBJECTIVE: Cell fixation on a microscope glass slide is a standard technique for evaluating cellular morphology in a wide range of biosamples. Cytofunnels are used in a cytocentrifuge to direct cells onto the glass slide and generate a "cytospin". Commercial cytofunnels have a fixed design with limited cytospin areas, being mostly single-use and are costly. The goal of this study was to design and manufacture a 3D-printed, customized cytofunnel that is cost-efficient, reusable and generates a larger cytospin area. We used an iterative design process using computer-aided design (CAD) software a
