Pelvic movements as rhythmic motor manifestation associated with restless legs syndrome.

Video-polysomnographic monitoring of a patient with a 4-year history of an unpleasant restless sensation originating in his lower abdomen showed stereotyped, repetitive, rhythmic pelvic body movements resembling coital behaviour at the wake-sleep transition. We discuss the association between restless legs syndrome and rhythmic movement disorder as a particular manifestation of a spectrum of rhythmic sleep-related movement disorders.

The role of task preference in the effectiveness of response interruption and redirection.

Response interruption and redirection (RIRD) is a common treatment for automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy; it involves the contingent presentation of task instructions. Tasks that are included in RIRD are typically selected based on caregiver report, which may affect the efficacy of RIRD. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the role of task preference in the efficacy of RIRD for four participants who engaged in vocal stereotypy. We conducted task-preference assessments and selected tasks of varying preferences to include in RIRD. For three out of four participants, the resu

Autoantibody-associated movement disorders.

Autoantibodies to the extracellular domain of neuronal proteins cause different neurological conditions with movement disorders as a prominent feature. We reviewed the literature of autoantibody-mediated and autoantibody-associated diseases focusing on anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis, autoimmune basal ganglia encephalitis, Sydenham chorea, and the rare syndrome of progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus. NMDAR encephalitis is a diffuse encephalitis with psychiatric and cognitive features associated with autoantibodies against the NR1 subunit of the NMD

Representation of autism in fictional media: A systematic review of media content and its impact on viewer knowledge and understanding of autism.

The way autism is represented in fictional media can impact people's views of autistic people. For example, representations may contribute to negative views of autistic people as being unusual or dangerous, or they may challenge stereotypes and instead highlight the strengths of autistic people. This work aimed to review previous research to understand how autistic people have been represented in fictional media (Part A). It also sought to understand whether viewing fictional portrayals of autism has an impact on people's knowledge of autism and attitudes towards autistic people (Part B). Of 1

Relationship between serum cortisol levels, stereotypies, and the presence of autism spectrum disorder in patients with severe intellectual disability.

Stereotypies are one of the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are common to both ASD and intellectual disability (ID). Previous studies have been inconclusive, with some showing a positive correlation between stereotypies and cortisol, while others have shown a negative correlation. We hypothesised and investigated the presence of ASD as one of the variables involved in this discrepancy. We tested the following hypotheses on serum cortisol in a total of 84 hospitalised patients with severe ID and ASD with severe ID. Hypothesis (1) Higher levels of stereotypies are asso

Tourette Syndrome as a Disorder of the Social Decision Making Network.

Tourette syndrome is a common neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the presence of tics, stereotyped involuntary movements and phonations. Considerable evidence points to developmental abnormalities of the basal ganglia as tic substrates. Basal ganglia dysfunction does not account for important features of Tourette syndrome, including its natural history, male predominance, and the characteristic quality and distribution of tics. The latter mainly involve eye, face, and head movements, in addition to a variety of simple to complex phonations. A major normal function of these movements, and o

Effects of intrastriatal administration of selective dopaminergic ligands on spontaneous stereotypy in mice.

Abnormal repetitive behaviors are often associated with specific developmental, genetic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Repetitive motor behaviors, often referred to as stereotypies, have been studied extensively as they can be readily induced by certain drugs (e.g., amphetamine). Recent work has shown, however, that such drug-induced models of stereotypy may not accurately reflect the neurobiological perturbations responsible for the spontaneous manifestation of these behaviors. The present study employed the deer mouse model of spontaneous and persistent stereotypy to evaluate the capacity

Choreoathetosis in the Setting of Human Herpesvirus-6 Infection in a Transplant Recipient.

BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) has been associated with various neurologic disorders, but movement disorders are rare. This case describes a patient who developed a choreoathetotic movement disorder in the setting of HHV-6 infection. CASE REPORT: A 72-year-old woman with AML and recent HHV-6 encephalitis following stem cell transplant presented with involuntary movements. Neurologic examination demonstrated motor impersistence and irregular non-stereotyped writhing movements consistent with a choreoathetotic movement disorder secondary to HHV-6 infection. DISCUSSION: This is the fir

An Honest Joker reveals stereotypical beliefs about the face of deception.

Research on deception detection has mainly focused on Simple Deception, in which false information is presented as true. Relatively few studies have examined Sophisticated Deception, in which true information is presented as false. Because Sophisticated Deception incentivizes the appearance of dishonesty, it provides a window onto stereotypical beliefs about cues to deception. Here, we adapted the popular Joker Game to elicit spontaneous facial expressions under Simple Deception, Sophisticated Deception, and Plain Truth conditions, comparing facial behaviors in static, dynamic nonspeaking, and

Hyperkinetic stereotyped movements in a boy with biallelic CNTNAP2 variants.

BACKGROUND: Heterozygous variants in CNTNAP2 have been implicated in a wide range of neurological phenotypes, including intellectual disability (ID), epilepsy, autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), and impaired language. However, heterozygous variants can also be found in unaffected individuals. Biallelic CNTNAP2 variants are rarer and cause a well-defined genetic syndrome known as CASPR2 deficiency disorder, a condition characterised by ID, early-onset refractory epilepsy, language impairment, and autistic features. CASE-REPORT: A 7-year-old boy presented with hyperkinetic stereotyped movements

Automated Tracking and Quantification of Autistic Behavioral Symptoms Using Microsoft Kinect.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the last ten years, and today, roughly 1 in 68 children has been diagnosed. One hallmark set of symptoms in this disorder are stereotypical motor movements. These repetitive movements may include spinning, body-rocking, or hand-flapping, amongst others. Despite the growing number of individuals affected by autism, an effective, accurate method of automatically quantifying such movements remains unavailable. This has negative implications for assessing the outcome of ASD intervention and drug studies. Here we present a

Sleep-related movement disorders.

Several movement disorders may occur during nocturnal rest disrupting sleep. A part of these complaints is characterized by relatively simple, non-purposeful and usually stereotyped movements. The last version of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders includes these clinical conditions (i.e. restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, sleep-related leg cramps, sleep-related bruxism and sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder) under the category entitled sleep-related movement disorders. Moreover, apparently physiological movements (e.g. alternating leg muscle activat

Self-mutilation and Tourette's disorder.

Tourette's disorder is a stereotyped movement disorder that carries with it the risk of self-mutilation. Two cases are presented in which children with Tourette's disorder mutilated themselves. Possible physiologic mechanisms by which self-mutilation occurs in patients with Tourette's disorder are reviewed and treatment strategies are discussed.

Motor stereotypies in autism spectrum disorder: Clinical randomized study and classification proposal.

Motor stereotypies are one of the most frequent features in children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. They may disrupt children's functioning and development and be a potential source of stress for families. Several factors, including sex, age, cognitive ability, and severity of autism spectrum disorder, may influence the presence and intensity of stereotypies. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of motor stereotypies in a group of children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, it sought to investigate whether sex, age, cognitive ability, verbal language, neur

Descriptive Longitudinal Analysis of Stereotypy and Corresponding Changes in Psychotropic Medication.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotropic medication is often prescribed to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who engage in challenging and other behavior (e.g., aggression and stereotypy, respectively), but there is limited understanding of the effects of these medications on behavior. OBJECTIVE: Within the context of a larger study that evaluated the effects of psychotropic medication regimen changes on the presentation of challenging behavior, this study describes the presentation of stereotypic behavior of three individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: St

Extrapyramidal involvement in Rett's syndrome.

Extrapyramidal dysfunction is poorly characterized in Rett's syndrome, a neurodegenerative disorder in girls. We studied the motor and behavioral findings in 32 Rett's syndrome patients, 21 months to 30 years old. In addition to the typical stereotyped movements and scoliosis, other motor disturbances included bruxism, sialorrhea, ocular deviations, parkinsonian findings, dystonia, myoclonus, and athetosis. The types of movement disorders seemed to be age-related, with the hyperkinetic disorders occurring in the younger patients and the bradykinetic disorders occurring more frequently in the o

Towards a primate model of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: anatomo-behavioural correlation of disorders induced by striatal dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by abnormal movements (tics) often associated with behavioural disorders. Neuropathological data from GTS patients have suggested that aberrant activation of distinct striatal functional territories could produce a large spectrum of GTS symptoms. In a monkey model, injections of GABA-antagonist into the striatum enabled us to produce tic-like movements, hyperactivity and stereotyped behaviours. These effects had similarities with simple motor tics, hyperactivity and compulsive behaviours observed in GTS patients. In this study

A systematic review and evaluation of inhibitory stimulus control procedures as a treatment for stereotyped behavior among individuals with autism.

PURPOSE: Stereotypy is pervasive among persons with autism and may impact negatively on social inclusion and learning. The implementation of resource-intensive behavioral interventions to decrease these behaviors has been questioned. Inhibitory stimulus control procedures (ISCPs) comprise a type of antecedent-based intervention that has been proposed as an effective treatment approach for stereotypy but has received limited research attention to date. METHOD: The current systematic review sought to examine and synthesize the literature reporting applications of ISCPs in the treatment of stere
