Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) instability is a rare condition and results from either a traumatic high energy impact, such as a motor vehicle crash or contact sports injury, or non-traumatically as a result of structural pathology. The infrequency of this injury has contributed to its diagnosis being missed as well as the paucity of literature on treatment and outcomes. Patients with SCJ instability often report diminished range of motion as well as shoulder girdle pain. The presentation of instability in the sternoclavicular joint can vary in severity and anterior or posterior directionality.

INTRODUCTION: Infections of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) account for less than 1% of all joint infections. There are no standardized diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms defined in literature. This study intended to report the risk factors, the bacterial spectrum, the extent and localization and the clinical outcome of SCJ infections.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 13 patients (8 men, five women, mean age 37.6 years) with SCJ infections between Januray 1st 2008 and October 30th 2015 for clinical parameters and radiological studies. All patients we

Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation is a rare injury, usually caused by a direct blow to the medial chest wall. The SCJ is inherently unstable due to its bony components and most of its stability is derived from surrounding soft tissue. Among skeletally immature patients it is important to differentiate between true SCJ dislocation and fractures through the medial clavicle growth plate. There is a high anatomical proximity between the SCJ and mediastinal retrosternal structures, as the thoracic blood vessels, and traumatic posterior SCJ dislocation has the potential of harming t

Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SC) is rare. The most accepted technique for reconstruction of the defect after SC joint resection is the use of muscle flaps. We hypothesized that resection of ribs with the SC joint impacts timing, type and outcomes of reconstruction. This is a retrospective review of 44 patients who underwent wound closure with muscle flap following resection of the SC joint for septic arthritis over 14 years period from a single institution. Patients were divided into two groups based on the resection of the adjacent ribs with the SC joint. We found 18 (40.9%

Ganglion cysts originating from the sternoclavicular joint in children have not been previously reported. In this study, 5 children who presented with a small mass over the anterior aspect of the sternoclavicular joint were evaluated and treated. Only 1 patient was symptomatic. A ganglion cyst was suspected in each case and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging in 3 patients and ultrasound in one patient. Excisional biopsy was performed in 3 patients and the diagnosis of a ganglion cyst confirmed histopathologically. No patient has had a recurrence. Observation of asymptomatic cystic lesions

A case of an ipsilateral sternoclavicular (SC) joint dislocation and clavicle fracture is reported. Two hours postinjury an open reduction and internal fixation of the fractured clavicle was performed using a Kirschner wire plus a stainless steel cerclage wire. This was followed by a surgical repair of the SC joint capsule. The Kirschner wire and cerclage wires were removed 10 months later. The patient had complete recovery of shoulder function.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of a novel sternoclavicular hook-plate for treatment of proximal clavicle fracture with dislocation of sternoclavicular joint.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 13 cases of proximal clavicle fracture with dislocation of sternoclavicular joint treated with sternoclavicular hook-plate from June 2011 to January 2019 in our department. There were 9 males and 4 females, aged 26 to 78 years old, with an average age of (54.08±13.91) years old. All the patients had closed injuries without damage of blood vessels and nerves. The patient's operation time, intraoperat

BACKGROUND: Sternoclavicular joint infection (SJI), to include septic arthritis (SA), is a rare cause of chest pain and is often found in patients with significant risk factors and sources for SA. Most acute care laboratory results lack significant sensitivity to rule out SA. Radiographic findings in common acute care imaging often does not reveal findings of SA and osteomyelitis in the acute phase of the infection.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient without significant risk factors for SA, who initially presented with 3 days of pain to the left chest, left neck and shoulder. He had fever and

BACKGROUND: Instability of the sternoclavicular joint is a very uncommon disorder of the shoulder girdle. Acute traumatic dislocations are commonly treated nonoperatively. But severe displacement or chronic instability with recurrent symptomatic subluxation may require surgical intervention. We present our results with open reduction and internal fixation through an autologous gracilis tendon transplant or fiber tape in 8 patients treated surgically. The operative stabilisation of the sternoclavicular joint reduces pain level and improves function of the shoulder. This technique provides an ef

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to describe the demographics, management and functional outcomes of patients presenting with a sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation.
METHODS: A retrospective medical record review was conducted examining patients with SCJ dislocation admitted to an adult level 1 trauma centre between 2004 and 2012. Patient demographics, symptoms, associated injuries, imaging technique used in diagnosis, surgical data and neurovascular complications were recorded. Patients received a single-page questionnaire to assess physical function using two validated shoulder qu

BACKGROUND: Posterior injuries to the sternoclavicular (SC) joint are uncommon. In the skeletally immature (SI) population, these injuries have been described as either dislocations of the SC joint or fractures of the medial clavicular physis. The current literature and standardized test questions state that a posterior SC injury, in a SI patient, is more likely a physeal fracture than a SC joint dislocation. However, this injury characterization is based on case reports or small case series. The purpose of this study is to characterize posterior SC injuries in SI patients in terms of the prev

BACKGROUND: The sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is a true diarthrodial synovial joint and therefore vulnerable to the same disease processes as in other synovial joints. We identified a group of patients with monarticular arthritis of the SCJ that had a benign process and a self-limited disease course.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 25 female patients who presented with pain or swelling of the SCJ between January 2000 and December 2010. Their mean age was 59 years, and the average follow-up was 44 months. All patients underwent baseline radiographic imaging, technetium bone scan, com

The purpose of this study is to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the sternoclavicular (SC) joint seen in patients who presented to our department with joint pain related to trauma. Clinical history and MRI findings on 41 patients were reviewed retrospectively to establish types and frequencies of soft tissue injuries and subluxations. Because both SC joints were imaged, the asymptomatic joints were used as a control group. Articular disk injuries were seen in 80% of patients. Injuries of the anterior, posterior, interclavicular and costoclavicular ligaments were seen i

We report a case of atraumatic spontaneous posterior subluxation of the sternoclavicular joint in a 19-year-old woman without any known underlying pathology. There was no history of injury. The patient was treated operatively using the gracilis tendon to reinforce the anterior sternoclavicular ligament. One year later the patient is asymptomatic and has returned to her usual life.

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare benign disorder characterised by cartilaginous metaplasia of the synovium, most often affecting large joints. We describe an unusual case in the sternoclavicular joint of an adolescent, who presented with a localised swelling. Imaging demonstrated multiple calcified loose bodies, and the diagnosis was confirmed histologically following surgical excision. Management consisted of removal of the loose bodies with consideration of synovectomy to reduce recurrence. Early recognition is crucial to prevent progressive joint damage.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. It can affect the musculoskeletal system in the form of acute and rarely, in the form of chronic peripheral arthritis involving bilateral small and large joints. Axial joint involvement with sarcoidosis is rare. Herein we report a case with sternoclavicular joint arthritis as the initial presentation of sarcoidosis. This report aims to demonstrate a rare initial presentation of sarcoidosis and highlight the importance of considering sarcoidosis as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with sternoclavicular joint

Ebstein's anomaly accounts for 0.3% to 0.7% of all cases of congenital heart disease. The condition is characterized by abnormal tricuspid valve and right ventricle with apical displacement of tricuspid valve leading to atrialization of right ventricle. There have been case reports of patients surviving up to ninth decade. It is unusual for these patients to be asymptomatic in adulthood for long duration. We describe a patient with Ebstein's anomaly in the ninth decade with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic disorders around the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) are relatively uncommon. Previous cadaveric and radiographic studies have suggested that asymptomatic osteoarthritic changes are relatively common, progressively increasing with age. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of SCJ osteoarthritis in the general population using computed tomography (CT) scans.
METHODS: We assessed 464 SCJs in 232 patients undergoing a standardized axial CT scan of the thorax including both SCJs, across a range of ages from the second to tenth decade. The scans were undert
