On the spherical prototype of a complex dissipative late-stage formation seen in terms of least action Vojta-Natanson principle.

The spherical prototype of a crystalline and/or disorderly formation may help in understanding the final stages of many complex biomolecular arrangements. These stages are important for both naturally organized simple biosystems, such as protein (or, other amphiphilic) aggregates in vivo, as well as certain their artificial counterparts, mimicking either in vitro or in silico their structure-property principal relationship. For our particular one-seed based realization of a protein crystal/aggregate late-stage nucleus grown from nearby fluctuating environment, it turns out that the (osmotic-ty

A vulnerability-weighted stochastic framework for urban stormwater drainage resilience: Enhancing estimation accuracy and unveiling failure mechanisms.

Structural failures are widespread in stormwater drainage networks during long-term operation, making quantitative structural resilience assessment essential. However, current structural resilience assessments typically simplify the threat to the number of failed pipes, implicitly assuming that all pipes exert equal influence on system performance. This coarse representation weakens the explanatory power of the threat metric and requires extensive simulations for stable assessment; meanwhile, simplified failure scenarios can distort results. To address these issues, this study develops an effi

Stochastic Graph Heat Modelling for Diffusion-based Connectivity Retrieval.

Heat diffusion describes the process by which heat flows from areas with higher temperatures to ones with lower temperatures. This concept was previously adapted to graph structures, whereby heat flows between nodes of a graph depending on the graph topology. Here, we combine the graph heat equation with the stochastic heat equation, which ultimately yields a model for multivariate time signals on a graph. We show theoretically how the model can be used to directly compute the diffusion-based connectivity structure from multivariate signals. Unlike other connectivity measures, our heat model-b

Coupled Human-Environment Dynamics of Forest Pest Spread and Control in a Multi-Patch, Stochastic Setting.

BACKGROUND: The transportation of camp firewood infested by non-native forest pests such as Asian long-horned beetle (ALB) and emerald ash borer (EAB) has severe impacts on North American forests. Once invasive forest pests are established, it can be difficult to eradicate them. Hence, preventing the long-distance transport of firewood by individuals is crucial. METHODS: Here we develop a stochastic simulation model that captures the interaction between forest pest infestations and human decisions regarding firewood transportation. The population of trees is distributed across 10 patches (par

A graph-based N-body approximation with application to stochastic neighbor embedding.

We propose a novel approximation technique, bubble approximation (BA), for repulsion forces in an N-body problem, where attraction has a limited range and repulsion acts between all points. These kinds of systems occur frequently in dimension reduction and graph drawing. Like tree codes, the established N-body approximation method, BA replaces several point-to-point computations by one area-to-point computation. Novelty of BA is to consider not only the magnitudes but also the directions of forces from the area. Therefore, its area-to-point approximations are applicable anywhere in the space.

Regular transport dynamics produce chaotic travel times.

In the hope of making passenger travel times shorter and more reliable, many cities are introducing dedicated bus lanes (e.g., Bogota, London, Miami). Here we show that chaotic travel times are actually a natural consequence of individual bus function, and hence of public transport systems more generally, i.e., chaotic dynamics emerge even when the route is empty and straight, stops and lights are equidistant and regular, and loading times are negligible. More generally, our findings provide a novel example of chaotic dynamics emerging from a single object following Newton's laws of motion in

Development of an individual-based model for polioviruses: implications of the selection of network type and outcome metrics.

We developed an individual-based (IB) model to explore the stochastic attributes of state transitions, the heterogeneity of the individual interactions, and the impact of different network structure choices on the poliovirus transmission process in the context of understanding the dynamics of outbreaks. We used a previously published differential equation-based model to develop the IB model and inputs. To explore the impact of different types of networks, we implemented a total of 26 variations of six different network structures in the IB model. We found that the choice of network structure p

Distance function for stochastic matrices.

The ability to quantify the similarity of stochastic processes is important in a wide range of areas including communications, simulation, and operational research. Such processes are commonly modeled as Markov Chains and so a natural way to compare their similarity is to compute distances between pairs of Markov Chains. We propose a distance function on the space of stochastic matrices that draws on ideas from information geometry. We first show that the Bhattacharyya angle is an appropriate measure of distance between Markov chain sequences, drawing on examples taken from healthcare processe

Noise effect on soliton phenomena in fractional stochastic Kraenkel-Manna-Merle system arising in ferromagnetic materials.

This work dives into the Conformable Stochastic Kraenkel-Manna-Merle System (CSKMMS), an important mathematical model for exploring phenomena in ferromagnetic materials. A wide spectrum of stochastic soliton solutions that include hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational functions, is generated using a modified version of Extended Direct Algebraic Method (EDAM) namely r+mEDAM. These stochastic soliton solutions have practical relevance for describing magnetic field behaviour in zero-conductivity ferromagnets. By using Maple to generate 2D and 3D graphical representations, the study analyses how

Frequency-Domain Reconstruction of the Speed of Sound in Ring-Array Ultrasound Computed Tomography With Stochastic Phase Encoding.

The framework of ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) has recently reemerged as a powerful, safe, and operator-independent way to image the breast. State-of-the-art image reconstruction methods are performed with iterative techniques based on deterministic optimization algorithms in the frequency domain in the 300 kHz - 1 MHz bandwidth. Alternative algorithms with deterministic and stochastic optimization have been considered in the time domain. In this article, we present the equivalent stochastic inversion in the frequency domain [phase encoding (PE)], with a focus on reconstructing the spe

A stochastic alternative technique for Compton Maximum Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) reconstruction.

Even though iterative methods and particularly Maximum Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithms have been established in reconstruction with Compton data, their detailed design with respect to physical rules and processes dominate their plain implementation in the form of a system matrix. A new elementary but efficient alternative for the well-known system matrix with respect to Compton Camera image reconstruction is presented in this work. For each detected event there is a weighting factor inserted as an accumulated probability which carries all the necessary information. This p

Decision making and learning while taking sequential risks.

A sequential risk-taking paradigm used to identify real-world risk takers invokes both learning and decision processes. This article expands the paradigm to a larger class of tasks with different stochastic environments and different learning requirements. Generalizing a Bayesian sequential risk-taking model to the larger set of tasks clarifies the roles of learning and decision making during sequential risky choice. Results show that respondents adapt their learning processes and associated mental representations of the task to the stochastic environment. Furthermore, their Bayesian learning

Nested Stochastic Resetting: Nonequilibrium Steady States and Exact Correlations.

Stochastic resetting breaks detailed balance and drives the formation of nonequilibrium steady states. Here, we consider a chain of diffusive processes x_{i}(t) that interact unilaterally: at random time intervals, the process x_{n} stochastically resets to the instantaneous value of x_{n-1}. We derive analytically the steady-state statistics of these nested stochastic resetting processes including the stationary distribution for each process as well as its moments. We are also able to calculate exactly the steady-state two-point correlations ⟨x_{n}x_{n+j}⟩ between processes by mapping the pro

Stochastic approximation to contrastive learning.

Contrastive learning pulls positive samples (similar examples) closer and pushes negative samples (dissimilar examples) away to learn a meaningful mapping from inputs to outputs. It is found in a broad range of applications in computer vision that range from image classification to object detection to video processing and has a similarly broad impact and relevance in natural language processing, audio and speech, graphs, recommendation systems, and multimodal learning. Although contrastive learning done right typically achieves state-of-the-art results, there are major limitations with traditi

Noise-induced excitability: Bloom, bust, and extirpation in autotoxic population dynamics.

Species populations often modify their environment as they grow. When environmental feedback operates more slowly than population growth, the system can undergo boom-bust dynamics, where the population overshoots its carrying capacity and subsequently collapses. In extreme cases, this collapse leads to total extinction. While deterministic models typically fail to capture these finite-time extinction events, we propose a stochastic framework, derived from an individual-based model, to describe boom-bust-extirpation dynamics. We identify a noise-driven, threshold-like behavior where, depending

Contrasting phylogenetic and functional trait responses in post-fire karst forests: Stochasticity and environmental filtering.

High-severity fires fundamentally alter community assembly trajectories, a process particularly critical in fragile karst ecosystems. Elucidating the mechanisms driving early post-fire assembly is vital for identifying constraints on ecological recovery. Here, we investigated plant community assembly in burned karst sites in central Guizhou Province, China, surveying vegetation 0.5-5 years following a high-severity forest fire. By integrating null models, Mantel tests, and random forest analyses, we quantified shifts in community characteristics and the drivers governing assembly processes. Th

Temporally extended dissipative blankets: Boundary history as a non-Markovian screening mechanism.

Biological boundaries are often modeled as instantaneous Markov blankets that separate internal and external states through sensory and active variables. However, real biological interfaces are dissipative systems with finite response times, relaxation, noise, and delayed transduction. Here, we examine whether such physical boundary dynamics can produce a non-Markovian screening relation, in which conditional separation is recovered only when boundary history is included. We constructed a minimal stochastic dissipative loop linking external, sensory, internal, and active states, with delayed s

Methods for reproducible comparison of strategies in stochastic modelling.

Stochastic simulations are often used to model real-world phenomena such as infectious disease dynamics. In this modelling, differing strategies are often compared to one another by comparing the model outputs of each strategy. Hash-based matching, pseudo-random number generation is an approach for stochastic simulations that was implemented by Pearson and Abbott in the hashprng package to overcome challenges with comparing model simulations in a way that considers the dependency between model outputs. We demonstrate how methods based on this approach grant considerable benefit when comparing

Impact of fixture purging on water age and excess water usage, considering stochastic water demands.

Higher water ages are linked with water quality decline as chlorine dissipates, temperatures become more favorable for microbial growth, and metals and organic matter leach from the pipes. Water fixtures with automated purging devices can limit water age in premise plumbing systems, but also increase water use. To develop purging strategies that lower age while also minimizing water use, the stochastic nature of water demands must be considered. In this research, a hydraulic plumbing network model, with stochastic demands at fixtures, was used to compare water age and water use for five purgin

Geostatistical modeling of positive-definite matrices: An application to diffusion tensor imaging.

Geostatistical modeling for continuous point-referenced data has extensively been applied to neuroimaging because it produces efficient and valid statistical inference. However, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a neuroimaging technique characterizing the brain's anatomical structure, produces a positive-definite (p.d.) matrix for each voxel. Currently, only a few geostatistical models for p.d. matrices have been proposed because introducing spatial dependence among p.d. matrices properly is challenging. In this paper, we use the spatial Wishart process, a spatial stochastic process (random fiel
