Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a potential complication following deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in children. Guidelines for management of PTS in children are non-existent. The absence of guidelines may limit the use of elastic compression stockings (ECS), offered for prevention and treatment of PTS in adults. We report the case of a 6-year-old, who developed PTS following a presumed line-related lower limb DVT, with dramatic improvement in functional status with ECS use. The presented case highlights the subtle nature of symptoms, potential benefits and limitations of ECS use for PTS, and curr

AIM: This paper reports a systematic review whose objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings as prophylaxis for flight-related venous thrombosis, including deep vein thrombosis and superficial venous thrombosis, after air travel in the general population.
BACKGROUND: Despite the extended history of the use of graduated compression stockings, their application to prevent flight-related thrombosis was not explored until flight-related thrombosis was perceived as a preventable illness. Even now, their effectiveness in preventing flight-related thrombosis remai

The physiological effects of elastic compression stockings on venous disorders of the leg have been studied in three groups of 10 patients. These patients were divided by examination and ascending venography into those with: (a) a normal venous system in the leg, (b) superficial varicose veins and (c) a post-phlebitic limb. In a randomized cross-over trial each groups wore Eesiness NHS two-way stretch or Sigvaris medium compression below-knee stockings for three weeks. In the post-phlebitic limb group a further comparison was made with Sigvaris strong compression below-knee stockings after a 6

(1) Background: Stroke patients with hemiplegia have an increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT increases the risk of life-threatening pulmonary embolism and is associated with poor prognosis. The early wearing of compression stockings can help prevent DVT. This study aimed to assess the impact of compression stockings on body balance in stroke patients with unilateral lower extremity muscle weakness; (2) Methods: Hemiplegic stroke patients in the subacute phase who were able to walk with assistance were recruited. The patients were divided into two groups: one group recei

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to address benefits and harms of using elastic compression stockings after lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis.
METHODS: We searched 7 electronic databases through January 15, 2015, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs)/quasi-randomized trials reporting on elastic compression stocking efficacy on postthrombotic syndrome incidence, recurrent venous thromboembolism, mortality, and acute pain after deep vein thrombosis. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, assessed risk of bias, and assessed confidenc

BACKGROUND: Overnight fluid shift from the legs to the neck may narrow the upper airway and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) pathogenesis. We hypothesized that below-the-knee compression stockings will decrease OSA severity in a general OSA population by decreasing daytime leg fluid accumulation and overnight fluid shift and increasing upper-airway size.
METHODS: Patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 10) were randomized to wear compression stockings during the daytime or to a control group for 2 weeks. Overnight polysomnography with measurement of leg and neck fluid volumes and

Graduated elastic compression stockings (GECS) are commonly used in the primary prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT); however, their role in preventing recurrent DVT and also post-thrombotic syndrome is less well established. The aim of this review was to investigate the effect of GECS after DVT. A literature search was performed by two independent searchers in order to identify randomised controlled trials on the effect of GECS in preventing recurrent DVT and post-thrombotic syndrome. Four randomised trials, including 537 patients, were identified. Two of the studies demonstrated that bel

BACKGROUND: Chronic venous stasis ulcers produce substantial morbidity rates and result in a significant expense to society. Fortunately, compression stockings (CS) have been found to reduce the rate of recurrence in patients with previous ulceration. Surprisingly, Medicare and other insurers do not reimburse the expense associated with CS or with patient education (Ed), which is essential to ensure compliance.
METHODS: A Markov decision analysis model was used for analysis of the cost-effectiveness of a strategy of reimbursement for CS and Ed (prophylaxis) versus one that does not supply the

Compression stockings are a safe, noninvasive treatment for patients with symptomatic orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. In this report, we describe a 75-year-old man who had development of pulmonary edema approximately 45 minutes after placement of compression stockings on the first postoperative day following a carotid endarterectomy. No sudden changes were noted on an electrocardiogram or echocardiogram or in the cardiac isoenzymes associated with the pulmonary edema. The patient had a history of coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus-induced autonomic

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of graduated compression stockings in prophylaxis of postoperative venous thromboembolism is unclear to many physicians. Surveys show there is considerable variability in their use and their perceived effectiveness. We undertook to establish, by a systematic overview of the literature, the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings in the prophylactic setting of postoperative venous thromboembolism.
METHODS: Studies published between 1966 and June 1992 were identified through the MEDLINE database, with a search in all languages, through reviews of Current C

In this randomised controlled trial, we evaluated the role of elastic compression using ankle injury stockings (AIS) in the management of fractures of the ankle. A total of 90 patients with a mean age of 47 years (16 to 79) were treated within 72 hours of presentation with a fracture of the ankle, 31 of whom were treated operatively and 59 conservatively, were randomised to be treated either with compression by AIS plus an Aircast boot or Tubigrip plus an Aircast boot. Male to female ratio was 36:54. The primary outcome measure was the functional Olerud-Molander ankle score (OMAS). The seconda

BACKGROUND: Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is a common yet challenging condition with limited effective treatments. Elastic compression stockings (ECS) have been proposed as a potential therapy, but their real-world effectiveness remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the effectiveness of lower extremity compression with thigh-high ECS vs sham stockings for the prevention of VVS recurrence.
METHODS: This multicenter, parallel, blinded, randomized sham-controlled trial enrolled adults 18 to 65 years of age with ≥2 VVS episodes in the past year. Participants were randomized 1:1 to

This systematic review investigated the effects of wearing below-knee compression stockings (CS) on exercise performance (or sports activity) and associated physiological and perceived indicators. We searched articles on PubMed using the following terms: "graduated compression stockings"; "compression stockings"; "graduated compression socks"; "compression socks" combined with "performance", "athletes", "exercise", "exercise performance", "fatigue", "sports" and "recovery", resulting in 1067 papers. After checking for inclusion criteria (e.g., original studies, healthy subjects, performance an

BACKGROUND: People with chronic venous insufficiency who develop leg ulcers face a difficult condition to treat. Venous leg ulcers may persist for long periods of time and have a negative impact on quality of life. Treatment requires frequent health care provider visits, creating a substantial burden across health care settings. The objective of this health technology assessment was to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, budget impact, and patient experiences of compression stockings for prevention of venous leg ulcer recurrence.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of

OBJECTIVE: How usable two standardised measuring methods are for the selection of three different brands of ready-made below-knee compression stockings. Furthermore, this study aims to determine how many of the included patients fit into a ready-made compression stocking in a limited selection of brands.
METHOD: Consecutive patients suffering from venous insufficiency and treated at a specialised wound healing centre were included in this prospective comparative study. Two standardised measuring methods were used to evaluate the suitability of three different brands of ready-made below knee c

We performed a prospective, randomised controlled trial in 177 patients who were having either total hip or knee replacement, to evaluate the use of both above- and below-knee graded compression stockings in the prevention of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). With above-knee stockings, we found no significant reduction of the overall, proximal or major calf (> 5 cm) DVT rates. With below-knee stockings, the overall thrombosis rate was similar to that of the control group but the stockings appeared to have altered the pattern of thrombosis. Patients who had total hip replacement and wore below-knee s

OBJECTIVES: The occurrence of leg edema in patients with chronic venous disease (CVD) is currently evaluated by visual inspection, palpation, and measurement of limb circumference. The changes of soft tissues morphology in swollen legs have been poorly investigated by ultrasonography (US) in the past. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of medical compression stockings (MCS) on the US morphology of the cutaneous and subcutaneous layers (CL and SCL, respectively) in legs with venous edema.
METHODS: The morphology of the cutaneous and subcutaneous layers (CL and SCL) was evalu
