Simultaneous optimization of film morphology and structure dimensionality in Cs3Sb2I9 through butylamine gas treatment.

Food safety is a critical public health issue worldwide as the consumption of unhygienic food causes millions of illnesses annually. The contaminated food is primarily unsafe due to the presence of microorganisms (i.e. bacteria and viruses), chemicals (i.e. pesticides and heavy metals), and physical hazards (i.e. glass, metal and plastic). Foodborne illnesses such as salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, listeriosis, E. coli infection, botulism, cholera, norovirus infection, and others are commonly caused by the problems associated with food hygiene. From the modest beginnings rooted in basic hyg

Prevalence and risk factors for intestinal parasites in food handlers, southern Brazil.

In this study, the prevalence and risk factors for enteroparasites were determined in food handlers from Maringá, Paraná State, southern Brazil. Fecal and subungual materials of 150 street food vendors were analyzed by the methods of Lutz, Faust, and Mello, respectively. A questionnaire on hygiene and sanitary conditions of the workplace and of domicile was applied. The prevalence of enteroparasites was 28%, and the protozoa infection was more expressive (21.3%) than by helminths (6.7%), but without significant difference (p > 0.05). Entamoeba coli was the most frequent species occurring in 15

Levamisole: a dangerous new cocaine adulterant.

Levamisole has increasingly been discovered in street cocaine as an adulterant. Recent reports have linked levamisole in street cocaine to agranulocytosis in cocaine users. It is well known that agranulocytosis is associated with therapeutic use of levamisole, and this may have led to the withdrawal of the drug from the US market. Levamisole was a US Food and Drug Administration-approved drug that has been used as an immunomodulator, a chemotherapy adjuvant, and anthelmintic medication. The purpose of adulterating street cocaine with levamisole is not known, but it has been speculated that it

Pathways of exposure to Vibrio Cholerae in an urban informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya.

Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) bacterium, with strains belonging to serogroups 01 and 0139 causing a huge proportion of the disease. V. cholerae can contaminate drinking water sources and food through poor sanitation and hygiene. This study aimed to identify environmental routes of exposure to V. cholerae within Mukuru informal settlement in Nairobi. We collected nine types of environmental samples (drinking water, flood water, open drains, surface water, shaved ice, raw produce, street food, soil, and public latrine swabs) over 12 months. All samples w

A linear tessellation model for the identification of "food desert": A case study of Shanghai, China.

The "food desert" problem has been treated under a national strategy in the United States and other countries. At present, there is little research on the phenomenon of "food desert" in China. This study takes Shanghai as the research area and proposes a multiscale analysis method using a linear tessellation model that splits the street network into homogeneous linear units. Firstly, the network kernel density estimation using a linear tessellation model is used to measure the travel-mode-based food accessibility. Considering the actual travel constraints, the GPS trajectory data of four trave

Patterns of Suya (roasted beef) consumption, awareness of trace metal contamination, and food safety practices among residents of Yenagoa Metropolis, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Suya, a widely consumed street-vended meat in Nigeria, may expose consumers to trace metal contamination due to informal preparation and vending conditions. Given its frequent patronage, contamination risk is shaped not only by exposure but also by how often people consume Suya, the factors influencing vendor choice, and their understanding of contamination and protective behaviors. In this study, "knowledge" refers to consumers' understanding of trace metal sources and health effects, while "awareness/safety practices" reflect risk perception and behavioral responses to minimize e

Location of food consumption and travelers' diarrhea.

Daily food histories for one month were obtained in summer, 1975, from students attending a Mexican university to determine the influence of food consumption on the development and etiology of diarrhea. In newly-arrived students from the U.S. who ate half or more of their meals in the school cafeteria and public restaurants there were significant increases in diarrhea (p less than 0.005); shigella infection (p less than 0.05) and toxigenic E. coli infection (p less than 0.025) compared to the students eating a comparable number of meals in private homes. In the summer U.S. students there was a

Drug use among street children in southern Brazil.

We studied the self-reported activities engaged in by children found wandering on the streets of Porto Alegre, Brazil, aiming to describe their drug abuse habits and practice of thefts or mendicancy. One hundred-and-five youngsters, 6-18 years old, were interviewed in the streets. Although the external appearance of the interviewed children lacked cues as to their life-style differences, three diverse life-style characteristics were depicted among them. Almost 25% of the children lived with their families and went to school (FAMSCH) and 46% lived with their families but didn't go to school (FA

First report of extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase-producing MDR Klebsiella pneumoniae from Fuchka.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and Carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-KP and CP-KP), in the food supply chain, poses a significant public health threat. Ready to eat (RTE) street foods, especially fuchka, a highly popular snack in Bangladesh, India and Southeast Asia, represents a critical breach in food safety. This study investigated the multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns of K. pneumoniae isolated from fuchka with an emphasis on phenotypic and genotypic detection of ESBL-KP and CP-KP. A total of 60 samples were collected from 15

Technology for Improving Street Dog Welfare and Capturing Data in Digital Format during Street Dog Sterilisation Programmes.

Street dogs survive on food handouts provided by individuals, or the wider community yet typically receive limited to no veterinary care. They can also carry a variety of zoonotic diseases such as rabies, posing a significant risk to human and dog population health. Dog sterilisation is one of the most humane and effective methods available to control street dog populations. Dog sterilisation programmes, particularly those operating at a large-scale, often face a variety of challenges including limited resources, staffing, and less-than-ideal facilities. Recordkeeping is often a challenge as w

Food and Water Safety Risks From Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli Contamination in Bukavu City, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Introduction Bukavu city is facing sanitation challenges, with many reported cases of epidemics such as cholera, salmonellosis, and other infectious diseases. Food and water sold under poor sanitation conditions are exposed to potential contamination by pathogenic bacteria. Consumers are therefore at risk of contracting bacterial infections, which could increase the burden of infectious diseases. Solid waste and wastewater management is unsatisfactory in Bukavu city. Few scientific investigations have been conducted to assess the influence of environmental conditions on food and water contamin

The Health Profile of Street Children in Africa: A Literature Review.

The United Nations Children's Fund has labeled street children as children in difficult circumstances, which represent a minority population that has been under-represented for too long in health research. This is a concern because street children are at risk of carrying a greater disease burden. Their homeless lifestyle makes them more vulnerable to health risks and problems than children who live at home; as they roam the streets begging for food and money to obtain basic needs and are found sleeping in half-destroyed houses, abandoned basements, under bridges and in the open air. This paper
