INTRODUCTION: Pathologic fracture of the femur due to Streptococcus anginosus osteomyelitis has rarely been described. With limited evidence for treating S. anginosus osteomyelitis, the orthopaedic surgeon is presented with a difficult treatment decision at index presentation. Presented here is a case of failed conservative management, diagnostic dilemma, failed hardware stabilization, and definitive surgical treatment resulting in good clinical outcome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old male experienced acute right thigh pain, edema, and erythema after dental treatment 17 days prior. He was d

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) presents a formidable clinical challenge due to its rapid progression and potentially fatal outcomes. This case report describes the presentation, management, and outcomes of a 33-year-old female with advanced perineal NF. The report underscores the importance of prompt recognition, surgical debridement, and targeted antimicrobial therapy in optimizing patient outcomes. An extensive literature review was conducted to provide additional context, focusing on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic modalities, and treatment strategies for NF. Notably, this case hi

A wealth of research indicates that superficial gastritis (SG) and atrophic gastritis (AG) are precursors to gastric cancer (GC). While Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has long been recognized as a key player in GC development, recent findings by Fu et al. have identified Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) as an emerging pathogen that can trigger SG, AG and GC. S. anginosus, a gram-positive coccus, leverages its surface protein T. pallidum membrane protein C (TMPC) to engage with the annexin A2 (ANXA2) receptor of gastric epithelial cells, facilitating its colonization and invasion in the

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) was reported increased in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of oral cancer cells in the biological characteristics evoked by the S. anginosus and investigate its potential mechanisms.
METHODS: The growth curve and concentration standard curve of S. anginosus were determined, and a series of concentrations of S. anginosus supernatant were applied to OSCC cell lines SCC15, then selected an optimal time and concentration by CCK-8 assay. Then autophagic response, proliferative activi

RATIONALE: Streptococcus anginosus mostly colonizes the digestive and genitourinary system, including the oropharyngeal region. It commonly causes invasive pyogenic infection, but less likely causes infective endocarditis (IE).
PATIENT CONCERNS: An 18-year-old woman who had an underlying mitral valve prolapse without mitral regurgitation presented to our hospital with low-grade fever, left leg weakness, and left abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with brain infarction and microabscess as well as IE. The patient totally recovered after the 6-week course of intravenous antibiotics.
DIAGNOSIS: B

UNLABELLED: Pericarditis is a rare, rapidly progressing, life-threatening condition. A 49-year-old Japanese woman presented with heart failure resulting from cardiac effusion secondary to purulent pericarditis (bacterial pyogenic pericarditis) caused by Streptococcus anginosus. The patient required emergency pericardial drainage and irrigation. We report this case and discuss the available treatment options for this disease.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Purulent pericarditis accounts for less than 1 % of all acute pericarditis cases because treatment methods against causative bacteria have already be

Streptococcus anginosus is a common isolate of the oral cavity and an opportunistic pathogen for systemic infections. Although the pyogenic infections caused by S. anginosus are similar to those caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, S. anginosus lacks most of the well-characterized virulence factors of S. pyogenes. To investigate the pathogenicity of S. anginosus, we analysed the genome of a newly identified S. anginosus strain, KH1, which was associated with toxic shock-like syndrome in an immunocompetent adolescent. The genome of KH1 contains nine genomic islands, two Clustered Regularly Intersp

A man in his 60s with stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma of the left lung status postchemotherapy and radiation therapy presented with mixed septic and obstructive shock with multiorgan dysfunction. Initial electrocardiogram showed sinus tachycardia and diffuse concaved ST elevation. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology. CT thorax was notable for dense left lung consolidation with pleural effusion. Emergent pericardiocentesis and percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy were performed which successfully drained 500 mL of purulent pericardial fluid. A lef

Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) is a subgroup of viridans streptococci and can be found ubiquitously in normal human flora. SAG is known to form invasive pyogenic infection when it becomes pathogenic. Yet, SAG is a very rare cause of endocarditis, and there is a dearth of case reports on this topic. We present a rare case of native bicuspid aortic valve endocarditis secondary to S. anginosus that caused aortic insufficiency and ascending aortic aneurysm. To our knowledge, this is the first well-documented case report of community-acquired S. anginosus endocarditis on a bicuspid aortic valv

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG, S. anginosus, S. intermedius and S. constellatus) are often associated with severe disease and abscess formation. In our institution, we observed an apparent increase in frequency of intraorbital and intracranial infections resulting from SAG at Texas Children's Hospital. We undertook a retrospective review to describe the frequency and clinical features of these infections.
METHODS: We reviewed the database of the microbiology laboratory at Texas Children's Hospital from 2011 to 2018 for SAG-positive cultures. Cases included were those asso

Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus, SA), a facultatively anaerobic coccus, functions as both a commensal bacterium and an opportunistic pathogen. It is frequently associated with localized suppurative infections and abscess formation. Increasing evidence implicates it as an emerging pathogen that can trigger gastritis and gastric cancer. This review synthesizes current knowledge with emphasis on pathogenic mechanisms of infections and gastric cancer, as well as clinical management. Pathogenic mechanisms include bacterial adhesion, microbe-host interactions, immune microenvironment remodelin

We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 160 hospitalized children admitted for acute complicated sinusitis and compared children with S anginosus-associated infection to children with other or no pathogens identified. The incidence of S anginosus-associated infections increased 12% per year, and infections with S anginosus are associated with increased morbidity.

Lemierre's syndrome is an infrequent disease characterized by septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein followed by pulmonary embolism generally occurring after upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract infections. We present the case of a 15-year-old female patient with postseptal cellulitis and cervical abscess who developed pulmonary embolism and pleural effusion secondary to internal jugular vein thrombosis. Cultures were positive for Streptococcus anginosus, antibiotic treatment was established with satisfactory clinical outcome. High clinical suspicion is required for a diagnosis

Corpus cavernosum abscesses are uncommon with only 23 prior reports in the literature. Several precipitating factors for cavernosal infections have been described including injection therapy for erectile dysfunction, trauma, and priapism. Common causal organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, and Bacteroides. We report a unique case of a corpus cavernosum abscess due to proctitis with hematological seeding and review the literature on cavernosal abscesses.

Streptococcus species, particularly Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus anginosus, are recognized globally for their role in causing dental caries and other dental issues. Current treatments using fluoride products and conventional antibiotics are often ineffective due to the resilience of biofilms on tooth surfaces. To overcome these challenges, novel approaches that eliminate these pathogens are much needed. In this regard, we have prepared CFS (cell-free supernatant), a postbiotic preparation of our probiotic strain Pediococcus pentosaceus GS4, and investigated the anticariogenic propert

Pyogenic spondylodiscitis is uncommon and usually presents in the setting of immunosuppression. Streptococcus anginosus group are opportunistic pathogens that rarely cause this infection. We present a case of an immunocompetent 45-year-old male with extreme lower back pain, not even relieved by opioids. A magnetic resonance imaging done the day before arrival showed multiple lumbar disk degeneration and lumbar spondylosis. Initial examinations did not show significant alteration. During inpatient admission, his values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein increased, and a ne

INTRODUCTION: Deep neck space infections most commonly arise from a septic focus of the mandibular teeth, tonsils, parotid gland, middle ear or sinuses, usually with a rapid onset and frequently with progression to life-threatening complications. Lemierre's syndrome is classically defined by an oropharyngeal infection with internal jugular vein thrombosis followed by metastatic infections in other organs.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old female patient, with no significant past medical history, was diagnosed with a dental abscess on her left inferior 3rd molar. Six days later, the condition c

Streptococcus anginosus can be frequently isolated from brain abscesses, but is a rare cause of the liver, lung, and deep tissue abscesses. In this report, we present a patient with subdural empyema, brain abscess, and superior sagittal cerebral venous thrombosis as complications of rhinosinusitis whose purulent empyema sample yielded S. anginosus. A 13-year-old female patient was referred to our pediatric intensive care unit with altered mental status, aphasia, and behavioral change. On a brain computed tomography scan, subdural empyema extending from the left frontal sinus to the frontal int
