16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis distinguishes biotypes of Streptococcus bovis: Streptococcus bovis Biotype II/2 is a separate genospecies and the predominant clinical isolate in adult males.

We characterized 22 human clinical strains of Streptococcus bovis by genotypic (16S rRNA gene sequence analysis [MicroSeq]; Applied Biosystems, Foster City, Calif.) and phenotypic (API 20 Strep and Rapid ID32 Strep systems (bioMerieux Vitek, Hazelton, Mo.) methods. The strains, isolated from blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine, formed two distinct 16S ribosomal DNA sequence clusters. Three strains which were associated with endocarditis urinary tract infection (UTI), and sepsis clustered with the S. bovis type strain ATCC 33317 (cluster 1); other closely related type strains were S. eq

Diversity and Antimicrobial Resistance in the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus Complex (SBSEC) Isolated from Korean Domestic Ruminants.

S. bovis/S. equinus complex (SBSEC) includes lactic acid-producing bacteria considered as the causative agent associated with acute rumen lactic acidosis in intensive ruminants. Considering the limited information on the detailed characteristics and diversity of SBSEC in Korea and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), we investigated the diversity of SBSEC from domestic ruminants and verified the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) against several antimicrobials with their phenotypic resistance. Among 51 SBSEC isolates collected, two SBSEC members (S. equinus and S. lu

The Road to Infection: Host-Microbe Interactions Defining the Pathogenicity of Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus Complex Members.

The Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) comprises several species inhabiting the animal and human gastrointestinal tract (GIT). They match the pathobiont description, are potential zoonotic agents and technological organisms in fermented foods. SBSEC members are associated with multiple diseases in humans and animals including ruminal acidosis, infective endocarditis (IE) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, this review aims to re-evaluate adhesion and colonization abilities of SBSEC members of animal, human and food origin paired with genomic and functional host-micro

Clinical characteristics and significance of Streptococcus salivarius bacteremia and Streptococcus bovis bacteremia: a prospective 16-year study.

The aim of this study was to determine the clinical significance of Streptococcus salivarius isolates recovered from blood cultures and compare them with isolates of Streptococcus bovis biotypes I and II. Seventeen of the 52 (32%) S. salivarius isolates recovered were considered clinically significant, compared with 62 of the 64 (97%) S. bovis isolates (p<0.0001). Bacteremia caused by S. salivarius occurred mostly in patients who showed relevant disruption of the mucous membranes and/or serious underlying diseases. Patients with S. salivarius bacteremia were younger than those with S. bovis ba

An Overview on Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus Complex Isolates: Identification to the Species/Subspecies Level and Antibiotic Resistance.

Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC), a non-enterococcal group D Streptococcus spp. complex, has been described as commensal bacteria in humans and animals, with a fecal carriage rate in humans varying from 5% to over 60%. Among streptococci, SBSEC isolates represent the most antibiotic-resistant species-with variable resistance rates reported for clindamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and levofloxacin-and might act as a reservoir of multiple acquired genes. Moreover, reduced susceptibility to penicillin and vancomycin associated with mobile genetic elements have also be

The interaction between liver cirrhosis, infection by Streptococcus bovis, and colon cancer.

Whether cirrhotic patients with Streptococcus bovis bacteremia have an increased risk of colorectal neoplasm is uncertain. A multicentric retrospective cohort study was conducted investigating associations between S. bovis biotype and species, cirrhosis, and colorectal neoplasm. Out of 779 patients with S. bovis bacteremia, 69 (8.7%) had cirrhosis. No differences were found in the prevalence of colorectal neoplasm between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients undergoing colonoscopy. Among cirrhotic patients, prevalence of colorectal neoplasms was higher in S. bovis biotype I (S. gallolyticus) b

Streptococcus bovis group and biliary tract infections: an analysis of 51 cases.

Streptococcus bovis is a well-known cause of endocarditis, but its role in other infections has not been well described. We analysed prospectively all patients with biliary tract infections caused by S. bovis group during the period 1988-2011. We selected those cases associated with cholangitis and cholecystitis, defined according to Tokyo guidelines. Identification of the strains was performed using the API 20 Strep and the GP card of the Vitek 2 system, and was confirmed by molecular methods. Our series included 51 cases (30 cholangitis and 21 cholecystitis). The associated microorganisms we

Carcinoma of the colon 2 years after endocarditis due to Streptococcus bovis.

A patient with Streptococcus bovis endocarditis, on complete gastrointestinal evaluation had only an adenomatous polyp of the sigmoid colon. Twenty-eight months later she was found to have invasive cecal carcinoma. Periodic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract is therefore recommended for all patients with a history of S. bovis septicemia.

Secreted antigens as virulence associated markers in Streptococcus bovis strains from pigeons.

SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis were performed on the culture supernatant of 7 pigeon S. bovis reference strains belonging to the serotypes 1, 2, 3 and 5. The culture supernatant of highly virulent serotype 1, 2 and 5 strains contained four antigens that were absent in low virulent serotype 3 strains, notably a 185 kDa minor protein band (A) and a triplet (T1) of 70 kDa. The less virulent serotype 3 strains on the other hand contained protein triplets, that had a molecular mass of either 68 kDa (T2) or 74 kDa (T3). The prevalence of A, T1, T2 and T3 was examined in 68 S. bovis strains isola

Rapid identification of Streptococcus bovis by using combination constitutive enzyme substrate hydrolyses.

Several studies have documented the association of blood and rectal-culture positivity for Streptococcus bovis with gastrointestinal neoplasia, especially colonic carcinoma. Conventional methods using bile-esculin hydrolysis, salt tolerance, and sugar fermentations to differentiate S. bovis from other streptococci are laborious, slow, and relatively expensive. Commercially available systems are costly and require at least 24 to 48 h of incubation. A rapid identification procedure for S. bovis and related bacteria was developed. The method uses a reagent containing two hydrolyzable substrates,

High prevalence of inducible erythromycin resistance among Streptococcus bovis isolates in Taiwan.

Susceptibilities to 13 antimicrobial agents were determined by measurement of MICs for 60 isolates of Streptococcus bovis from blood cultures. Thirty-eight isolates (63.3%) had high-level resistance to erythromycin (MICs, >or=128 microg/ml). Among the 38 erythromycin-resistant strains, 21 isolates (55%) had inducible resistance to macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (iMLS isolates) and 17 (45%) had constitutive resistance to macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (cMLS isolates). Tetracycline resistance was also found among all of the erythromycin-resistant strains. None of the strains di

Association between bacteremia due to Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (Streptococcus bovis I) and colorectal neoplasia: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The association between bacteremia by Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (SGG) and colorectal neoplasia (CRN) is well established but the frequency of the association varies widely in different studies. We conducted a case-control study to assess the association between SGG bacteremia and CRN. METHODS: An analysis of all SGG bacteremias was performed during the period 1988-2011. The frequency of CRN in patients with SGG bacteremia was compared with the frequency of CRN in a symptomatic control group of patients matched at a 1:2 ratio for gender and age (±3 years) witho

CcpA-mediated regulation of cellular energy metabolism in the ruminal bacterium Streptococcus bovis.

This study investigated the cellular energy metabolite profiles of Streptococcus bovis S1. Glucose concentrations of 5 or 50 mM and the presence or absence of ccpA were applied during the cultivation of S. bovis S1. Results revealed the identification of 51 metabolites categorized into seven types: amino acid derivatives, amino acids, coenzymes and vitamins, nucleotides and their metabolites, organic acids and their derivatives, phosphate sugars, and phosphoric acids. Each group exhibited distinct cellular energy metabolite profiles, as evidenced by principal component analysis showing unique

Periprosthetic Joint Infection by Streptococcus bovis Reveals Hidden Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) is rare but clinically significant due to its established association with colorectal neoplasia. Early recognition and interdisciplinary management are essential to ensure favorable outcomes. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented with a chronic fistula and signs of active infection 20 years after uncemented total hip arthroplasty. Cultures from the wound identified S. bovis, prompting further evaluation. Imaging and laboratory tests supported a diagnosis of chronic PJI. A two-stage revision was perf

Streptococcus bovis meningitis associated with colonic diverticulosis and hearing impairment: a case report.

A 75-year-old woman presented to the Tropical Diseases Hospital, Goiania, Brazil, with a two-day history of fever and chills followed by headache and vomiting over the last 24 hours. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed 270 leukocytes/mmc (30 percent neutrophils); 20 red cells/mmc; undetectable levels of glucose and 232 mg/dL of protein. The Gram stain revealed several Gram-positive cocci, and CSF culture yielded Streptococcus bovis. A colonoscopy showed diverticula in descendent and transverse colon. After a 14-day course of penicillin G, the patient was discharged in a good state of health,

Transcriptional control of carbohydrate catabolism by the CcpA protein in the ruminal bacterium Streptococcus bovis.

As a potent, pleiotropic regulatory protein in Gram-positive bacteria, catabolite control protein A (CcpA) mediates the transcriptional control of carbohydrate metabolism in Streptococcus bovis, a lactate-producing bacterium that plays an essential role in rumen acidosis in dairy cows. Although the rumen uptake of carbohydrates is multi-substrate, the focus of S. bovis research thus far has been on the glucose. With the aid of gene deletion, whole-genome sequencing, and transcriptomics, we have unraveled the role of CcpA in carbohydrate metabolism, on the one hand, and acidosis, on the other,
