A Report of Primary Pyogenic Ventriculitis Caused by Streptococcus Constellatus Diagnosed by Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Primary ventriculitis is a rare but serious brain infection characterized by inflammation of the ependyma and purulence within the ventricular system. Due to the challenges in early diagnosis and the potential for suboptimal treatment, this condition carries a significant risk of complications such as recurrence, hydrocephalus, and death. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enables the rapid and broad-spectrum identification of pathogens, facilitating timely and precise diagnosis. CASE REPORT: This study presents the first reported case of primary ventriculitis caused by

Liver and Bilateral Tubo-Ovarian Abscesses Caused by Streptococcus constellatus in an Immunocompetent Adolescent: A Case Report.

Opportunistic infections most often occur in immunocompromised patients, however, they can also occur in immunocompetent patients. While rare, bacterial infections such as those from Streptococcus constellatus (S. constellatus) can cause severe pyogenic infections and abscess formations. It is important to understand the risk factors, diagnostic workup, and management of patients with this rare but enduring bacterial infection. Although most of the literature reports the prevalence of S. constellatus in adults, occurrences should not be overlooked in the pediatric population. We present a case

Investigating the Role of Invasive Streptococcus Constellatus Infection in Severe Systemic Disease Manifestations: A Case Report.

We hope to add to the literature evidence regarding the increasing morbidity associated with an invasive infection by a normal body commensal, Streptococcus constellatus (S. constellatus). An increasing amount of literature documentation of intra- and extracranial disease manifestations following a systemic infection by this micro-organism is noted. We describe the findings of severe, necrotizing right lung disease and possible septic brain emboli in a 54-year-old gentleman in whom microbiological investigations suggest Streptococcal pneumonia, S. constellatus, and mixed anaerobes as possible

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus constellatus in a patient with uncontrolled diabetes and bilateral diabetic foot ulceration.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus constellatus is commensal flora of the oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts with a proclivity for abscess formation. Bacteremia due to S constellatus is rare; however, rising incidences have been reported, particularly in patients with diabetes. Prompt surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy with a cephalosporin are the mainstays of treatment. CASE REPORT: The case presented here involves a patient with poorly controlled diabetes who had necrotizing soft tissue infection secondary to S constellatus. The infection originated from bilateral d

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis caused by Streptococcus constellatus in an immunocompetent patient: case report and review of the literature.

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis is a severe infection of the mediastinum. This syndrome manifests as fever and chest pain following cough and sputum production. A 49-year-old woman presented with fever and a 14-day history of pneumonia. CT showed mediastinal abscesses with a giant calcified mediastinal lymph node (21 × 18 mm) and pneumonia. Bronchoscopy by EBUS-TBNA under general anesthesia was performed. The pathogen found in the puncture culture was Streptococcus constellatus, and antibiotics (mezlocillin/sulbactam 3.375 IVGTT q8h) was administered. A proximal right main bronchial neopl

Streptococcus constellatus-associated Lemierre syndrome complicated by pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm in an 11-year-old girl.

We report a case of Lemierre syndrome complicated by multiple pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysms. A previously healthy 11-year-old girl presented with pansinusitis complicated by internal jugular vein thrombosis consistent with a diagnosis of Lemierre syndrome. She presented an episode of massive hemoptysis secondary to pseudoaneurysm rupture requiring radiologically guided embolization. Blood cultures isolated Streptococcus constellatus. Prolonged antibiotic therapy was administered. The patient was discharged from hospital 1 month later and recovered uneventfully.

Pterygomaxillary space infection complicated by meningitis due to Streptococcus constellatus: Two case reports and literature review.

RATIONALE: Streptococcus constellatus is a common oral bacterium implicated in pterygomaxillary space infections. Due to the deep anatomical location of these infections, they are often misdiagnosed as temporomandibular joint disorders. Although rare, concurrent meningitis in immunocompetent individuals can occur and may be life-threatening. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report 2 older male patients who presented with facial pain and headache, initially misdiagnosed as temporomandibular joint disorders. Their conditions rapidly progressed to fever, altered mental status, and neurological deficits. DI

Liver abscess and bacteremia caused by Streptococcus constellatus with suspected ileocecal valve lesion as the entry point.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. Streptococcus constellatus, part of the Streptococcus anginosus group, is an uncommon causative agent of PLA, though its incidence has been increasingly reported. We present the case of a 68-year-old man with a history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia, who was admitted after a traffic accident. Medical evaluation revealed bacteremia and liver abscesses caused by S. constellatus, and the patient was treated successfully with drainage and antibiotics. While the patient denied gastrointestinal sym

Case Report: Infection with Streptococcus constellatus manifesting as gelatinous pleural effusion in an HIV-positive patient.

Streptococcus constellatus, recognized as a commensal bacterium, has the potential to induce severe infections in patients with immunodeficiency. Here, we reported a rare case of Streptococcus constellatus infection that manifested as gelatinous pleural effusion in a patient with HIV. Although the effusion was gelatinous and partially encapsulated, it was completely resolved with timely administration of antibiotics, thereby eliminating the necessity for thoracic drainage, urokinase injection, or surgical intervention.

Severe pneumonia with empyema caused by Parvimonas micra and Streptococcus constellatus co-infection: a case report.

Empyema is a common complication of pneumonia, caused by the accumulation of purulent exudate due to pathogenic bacteria invading the pleural cavity. Parvimonas micra and Streptococcus constellatus are pathogens that rarely cause pneumonia with empyema. Herein, a case of severe empyema caused by these two pathogens, confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of pleural effusion cultures, is reported. A male Chinese patient in his late sixties presented with wheezing, cough, sputum expectoration, and fever. Blood and sputum cultures were negative for pathogens, but the pleural e

Characterization of Streptococcus constellatus strains recovered from a brain abscess and periodontal pockets in an immunocompromised patient.

BACKGROUND: There have been a number of reports of brain abscesses suggesting an odontogenic etiology. However, no efforts have been made to compare brain abscess isolates with isolates from the oral cavity using highly discriminative methods. We report a brain abscess caused by Streptococcus constellatus in an immunocompromised patient where oral infection (periodontitis) was suspected to be implicated. METHODS: The brain abscess and oral isolates were compared by means of one phenotypic and three genetic (restriction fragment length polymorphism [RFLP], ribotyping, and random amplified poly
