Activation of persistent Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus in mares with subclinical endometritis.

Endometritis in horses caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) may be underdiagnosed due to traditional diagnostic methods lacking sensitivity and specificity. We serendipitously identified a bacterial growth medium (bActivate) that appeared capable of inducing growth of dormant S. zooepidemicus, which subsequently allowed detection by standard diagnostics. To assess the effect of bActivate we compared its ability to activate dormant S. zooepidemicus in a group of potentially infected subfertile mares with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). All mares had to test

Zoonotic transmission of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus from a dog to a handler.

This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case report to describe the apparent transmission of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus from an infected dog to a handler who subsequently developed severe systemic infection. Characterization of the haemolytic streptococci isolated from both the patient and the dog, by phenotypic and molecular analysis, confirmed the canine and human isolates were identical.

Pneumonia in horses induced by intrapulmonary inoculation of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus.

To evaluate the possibility that Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (S.z) the causative bacterial agent of equine shipping fever pneumonia (ESFP), as well as to investigate its pathogenesis, 10 horses (seven Thoroughbreds and three Anglo-Arab species, ranging from 2-4 years in age) were experimentally inoculated, via an endoscope, into bronchus of the lung lobe with a dose of 30 ml of 1-7 x 10(8) CFU/ml of S.z. After inoculation, autopsy and pathological examinations were sequentially conducted 30 min, 1, 2, 3, 4, 17, 20 hr and 2 weeks later. Pneumonia induced by the intrapulmonary inocul

Impending rupture of mycotic aortic aneurysm infected with Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus.

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus is a beta-haemolytic, group C streptococcal bacterium. Although it is an opportunistic pathogen commonly found in horses, transmission to human can lead to severe infections. Here, we present a patient with S. equi subspecies zooepidemicus bacteraemia and consequent development of mycotic aneurysms.

Antimicrobial resistance among Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus and Rhodococcus equi isolated from equine specimens submitted to a diagnostic laboratory in Kentucky, USA.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among veterinary pathogens is necessary to identify clinically relevant patterns of AMR and to inform antimicrobial use practices. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus and Rhodococcus equi are bacterial pathogens of major clinical importance in horses and are frequently implicated in respiratory tract infections. The objectives of this study were to describe antimicrobial resistance patterns and identify predictors of AMR and multidrug resistance (MDR) (resistance to three or more antimicrobial classes) among equine S. zooepidemicus

Tricuspid valve endocarditis in a horse owner, caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (SESZ) are zoonotic group C streptococci primarily acquired from contact with horses and other animals, such as llamas. They are unusual causes of infection in humans and rarely cause infective endocarditis. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old woman presented with fever, malaise, and polyarthritis. Clinical evaluation diagnosed native tricuspid valve SESZ endocarditis. The SESZ isolate was genetically closely related to a clone causing an outbreak of post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis linked to the consumption of unpasteurized cheese in Brazil. T

Possible canine source of Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus causing meningitis in an infant.

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (S. zooepidemicus) is a pathogen that colonizes and causes disease in horses, and less commonly, in other mammals. This zoonotic disease in humans is rare. In the reported human cases, it has caused bacteremia, endocarditis, arthritis and meningitis, and it has been linked to contact with horses or ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products. We report a case of a six-month-old female patient who presented with a one-day history of fevers and neurological symptoms. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures revealed S. zooepidemicus, and brain imaging show

Antibody Titres to Strangvac® Antigens Correlate with Protection and Duration of Immunity Against Experimental Infection with Streptococcus equi Subspecies equi.

Background/Objectives: Strangles, caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi), remains a common and severe equine infectious disease. Strangvac®, a recombinant fusion protein vaccine licenced in Europe, contains the antigens (Ag) CCE, Eq85, IdeE and a saponin adjuvant. Although its efficacy is high (94% in clinical trials and 100% in some natural outbreaks), immune correlates of protection have not been defined. This study determined the antibody (Ab) thresholds predictive of protection against clinical disease following high-dose experimental S. equi infection and the expected leve

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus septicemia in alpacas: three cases and review of the literature.

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus septicemia of alpacas and llamas, also called alpaca fever, is characterized clinically by fever, depression, recumbency, and death, and pathologically by polyserositis. Although a few natural and experimental cases of the disease have been reported, very little information about the pathology of spontaneous cases has been published. We present a detailed gross and microscopic description of 3 spontaneous cases of alpaca fever and review the literature on this condition. Typical of spontaneous and experimental infections with S. equi ssp. zooepidemic

Neutralisation of the Immunoglobulin-Cleaving Activity of Streptococcus equi Subspecies equi IdeE by Blood Sera from Ponies Vaccinated with a Multicomponent Protein Vaccine.

Background:Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi) is the cause of strangles, one of the most prevalent diseases of horses worldwide. The disease is characterised by fever and the formation of abscesses in the lymph nodes of the head and neck, which can restrict the airway. A multicomponent subunit vaccine, Strangvac, has been shown to effectively reduce clinical signs of strangles and to reduce its incidence. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the immune response against the immunoglobulin-cleaving endopeptidase IdeE, a key protective component within the vaccine and the a

Globetrotting strangles: the unbridled national and international transmission of Streptococcus equi between horses.

The equine disease strangles, which is characterized by the formation of abscesses in the lymph nodes of the head and neck, is one of the most frequently diagnosed infectious diseases of horses around the world. The causal agent, Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, establishes a persistent infection in approximately 10 % of animals that recover from the acute disease. Such 'carrier' animals appear healthy and are rarely identified during routine veterinary examinations pre-purchase or transit, but can transmit S. equi to naïve animals initiating new episodes of disease. Here, we report the ana

Distinct Host and Bacterial Profiles in Murine Single Versus Co-Infection with Foal-Isolated Streptococcus equi and Streptococcus dysgalactiae.

This study investigated the interactive pathogenic characteristics of co-infection with Streptococcus equi (S. equi) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae (S. dysgalactiae) isolated from diseased foals. Integrating genomic analysis, in vitro phenotypic assays, and a murine intranasal infection model, we comparatively analyzed the biological traits and pathogenic differences between single and dual infections. Comparative genomic analysis revealed divergent virulence profiles between the two isolates, and both species harbored open pan-genomes. In vitro, the biofilm biomass of strain F1 was higher tha

Meningitis due to Streptococcus equi in a 73 year old woman with an osteodural defect.

Meningitis caused by Streptococcus equi (SE) is a rare disease associated with high rates of complications. Commonly identified risk factors are regular horse contact and consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. When diagnosed promptly, this infection can be cured. We report the case of a 73 year old woman who presented to the hospital with a sudden holocranial headaches, fever, photophobia, sonophobia, vomiting and behavioural disorders. She lived in a rural area and regularly consumed unpasteurized milk products. She had a medical history of osteodural defect, chronic otitis, high blood

An assessment of mucosal immunisation in protection against Streptococcus equi ('Strangles') infections in horses.

The ability of mucosally administered antigen to provide protection against Streptococcus equi ('Strangles') infections in horses was examined. First, an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect the immune status of horses to S. equi. This assay was used to select Strangles-naive horses for the study and also to monitor their response to immunisation. Potential vaccine candidates were: (a) orally administered paraformaldehyde killed S. equi; (b) intraperitoneally (IP) administered paraformaldehyde killed S. equi in a non-inflammatory adjuvant; (c) orally administered l

Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus Meningitis, Septicemia, and Brain Infarcts in a Costa Rican Infant.

Streptococcus equi, an equine commensal bacterium, is a rare etiology of septicemia and meningoencephalitis in humans and is extremely infrequent in children. Scarce literature has been published about its clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes in infants. Here, we describe a case of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus septicemia and meningoencephalitis in a five-month-old Costa Rican infant that was confirmed by peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cultures in a regional hospital of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica who developed multiple ischemic cerebral infarcts secondary to infect

Diagnosis, Surveillance and Management of Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus Infections in Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera).

During a 6-mo period, two 5-6 mo old female chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) were examined at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after the discovery of firm, nonmobile masses in the left ventral cervical and left axillary region. Other than these findings and mild weight loss, both chinchillas' physical exams were normal. Bloodwork revealed an inflammatory leukogram characterized by leukocytosis, toxic neutrophils, lymphopenia, and monocytosis with mild, nonregenerative anemia. At necropsy, both masses were identified as abscesses. Streptococcus equi, subspecies zooepidemicus

[First case report of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus post-infectious acute glomerulonephritis in France].

Post-infectious glomerulonephritis has become exceptional in France because streptococcus infections are well-treated. When they appear, clinical and biological symptoms are mostly typical and associate acute nephritic syndrome, acute renal failure, proteinuria, hematuria and low complement. We are reporting the first French case of acute post-infectious glomerulonephritis related to Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus, which is commonly found in horses and rarely in human pathology, and of which contamination is by direct contact with sick horses or by ingestion of non-pasteurized milk.

Comparison of nasopharyngeal and guttural pouch specimens to determine the optimal sampling site to detect Streptococcus equi subsp equi carriers by DNA amplification.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus equi subsp equi (S. equi) is the cause of "equine strangles" which is a highly infectious upper respiratory disease. Detection of S. equi is influenced by site of specimen collection, method of sampling, and type of diagnostic test that is performed. We hypothesized i) that a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay that targets the S. equi-specific eqbE gene would be more sensitive than a realtime PCR assay that targets the S. equi-specific seeI gene and ii) that LAMP of specimens obtained by guttural pouch lavage (GPL) would be more sensitive than LAMP of

Use of leukocytes as treatment for endometritis in mares experimentally infected with Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus.

This study compared four treatments for bacterial endometritis in mares experimentally infected with Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Twenty-five mares were used, 20 resistant and five susceptible to endometritis. Mares would be in estrus when infected. Twenty-four hours after inoculation, clinical, bacteriological and cytological examinations were performed and repeated until the first occurrence: negative cytology and no Streptococcus growth or the seventh day post-infection. All mares showed clinical signs of endometritis and were assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) intrauterine in
