Proteomics-based vaccine targets annotation and design of multi-epitope vaccine against antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus gallolyticus.

Streptococcus gallolyticus is a non-motile, gram-positive bacterium that causes infective endocarditis. S. gallolyticus has developed resistance to existing antibiotics, and no vaccine is currently available. Therefore, it is essential to develop an effective S. gallolyticus vaccine. Core proteomics was used in this study together with subtractive proteomics and reverse vaccinology approach to find antigenic proteins that could be utilized for the design of the S. gallolyticus multi-epitope vaccine. The pipeline identified two antigenic proteins as potential vaccine targets: penicillin-binding

Infected Superior Mesenteric Artery Aneurysm following Streptococcus gallolyticus Bacteremia Associated with Cecal Cancer: A Case Report.

Streptococcus gallolyticus bacteremia is associated with colorectal malignancy and infective endocarditis, whereas infected superior mesenteric artery aneurysm (SMAA) is rare. A 94-year-old woman with cecal cancer developed S. gallolyticus sepsis that improved with intravenous antibiotics. Two months later, contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a newly developed 17-mm distal SMAA, suggesting an infected aneurysm secondary to the prior bacteremia. Because of the high risk of rupture, urgent aneurysmectomy and ileocecal resection were performed. This rare case highlights an infected SMA

Fulminant Early-Onset Neonatal Sepsis Due to Streptococcus gallolyticus (Group D): A Report of a Fatal Case.

Streptococcus enterococci group D is a rare cause of neonatal sepsis, and it is associated with significant morbidity and a very high fatality rate. The infection is usually acquired intra-partum, from the colonization of the maternal genital tract. Most affected neonates have an early-onset presentation of symptoms, usually within the first 48 hours after birth, which is similar to other causes of neonatal sepsis such as Streptococcus agalactiae or Escherichia coli. We describe an early preterm infant with a fatal, early-onset sepsis caused by Streptococcus D.

Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among pigeon isolates of Streptococcus gallolyticus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium.

Thirty-three Streptococcus gallolyticus, 60 Escherichia coli and 18 Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium var. Copenhagen strains isolated from homing pigeons (Columba livia) were tested for susceptibility to the antimicrobials most commonly used to treat pigeons. Minimal inhibitory concentrations were determined using the agar dilution technique. Aminoglycosides (gentamicin and kanamycin), trimethoprim and flumequine were relatively inactive against the streptococci tested. Acquired tetracycline resistance amounted to 85%, and lincomycin and macrolide (erythromycin) resistance to 48 and 45

Bacteraemia due to Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus is associated with digestive tract malignancies and resistance to macrolides and clindamycin.

OBJECTIVES: This study was intended to delineate the association between digestive tract malignancies and bacteraemia due to Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and microbiological results of patients with bacteraemia due to Streptococcus bovis during the period 2000-2012. Species and subspecies identification of isolates originally classified as S. bovis was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing and PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of antimicrobial agents were determined by th

Severe Septic Shock Caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus in an Immunocompetent Infant: Clinical and Diagnostic Implications.

Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus is a rare pathogen causing bacteremia and meningitis in neonates and infants. We present a case of septic shock with cardiac arrest due to S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus infection in a previously healthy infant and review of the literature. Although S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus infections are typically considered to follow a mild clinical course in infants, this case highlights the potential for aggressive progression even in the absence of comorbidities. Evidence points that infants without apparent perinatal insults or immune dysfunc

Streptococcus gallolyticus Infection Associated With Colorectal Adenoma in a Patient With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report.

We present a case of Streptococcus gallolyticus sepsis in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) who had poor glycemic control. Once the sepsis and infection had improved, we examined the patient for colorectal adenoma or carcinoma and detected a stalked polyp with colonoscopy. Therefore, this case underscores the importance of actively screening for malignant colonic diseases in patients with S. gallolyticus infection. We believe that clinicians should be aware of this association as it demonstrates how to perform gastroenterological follow-up for patients infected with S. gallolyticu

Early-Onset Fulminant Sepsis in a Preterm Neonate due to Streptococcus gallolyticus : A Case Report and Literature Review.

Streptococcus gallolyticus is an uncommon cause of neonatal infections. We describe the first case of fulminant lethal neonatal sepsis due to S. gallolyticus reported in literature. Our patient was an extremely low birth weight premature infant born to a mother with prolonged rupture of amniotic membranes and chorioamnionitis. We also review the cases of neonatal S. gallolyticus infections reported in literature. Fifty-eight percent neonatal S. gallolyticus infections presented in the first week of life. Importantly, S. gallolyticus meningitis is more commonly reported with early-onset infecti

Isolation, characterization, and experimental infection of Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus from commercial turkeys with acute septicemia: a pilot study.

Streptococcus gallolyticus (SG) is a Gram-positive cocci found as commensal gut flora in animals and humans. SG has emerged as a cause of disease in young poults between 1 and 3 wk of age. SG is associated with septicemia resulting in acute mortality with no premonitory signs in turkeys. Three SG isolates were obtained from clinical field cases of acute septicemia of commercial turkeys and used in three independent experiments. In Experiment 1, embryos were inoculated 25 d of embryogenesis with varying concentrations of SG1, SG2, or SG3. In Experiment 2, day of hatch, poults were inoculated wi

Inducible Expression of both ermB and ermT Conferred High Macrolide Resistance in Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus Isolates in China.

Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus is an under-recognized pathogen and zoonotic agent causing opportunistic infections in humans. Despite increasing recognition of this subspecies as a cause for human infectious diseases, limited information is known about its antibiotic resistance mechanism. In this study, we aim to identify the molecular mechanism underlying the high macrolide resistance of six S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus isolates from dead ducklings collected in several natural outbreaks in China during 2010-2013. All isolates exhibited multi-drug resistance including hi

Neonatal early-onset sepsis caused by Streptococcus Gallolyticus subsp. Pasteurianus with severe pulmonary hypertension and leukemoid reaction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (SGSP) is an uncommon cause of neonatal early-onset sepsis (EOS). We present a case of neonatal EOS attributed to SGSP in an infant complicated by meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) and congenital pneumonia. The infant developed severe pulmonary hypertension and exhibited a leukemoid reaction during recovery. The clinical features of this case are rare, and a comprehensive review of her peripartum and follow-up data could enhance our understanding of this organism. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a full-term female neonate born to a health

A Case of Rectal Cancer Discovered Following the Occurrence of a Stent-Graft Infection with Streptococcus gallolyticus after Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair.

A 79-year-old man was admitted for transurethral resection of a bladder cancer. He had a history of thoracic endovascular aortic repair for Stanford type B acute aortic dissection and thoracic aortic aneurysm performed 2 years prior. During hospitalization, computed tomography scan findings raised suspicion of a stent-graft infection. Blood cultures confirmed the presence of Streptococcus gallolyticus ssp. pasteurianus. Gallium scintigraphy supported the diagnosis of a stent-graft infection. A subsequent lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a colorectal cancer in the lower rectum. We then

Development of a Triplex TaqMan Real-Time PCR Assay for Simultaneous Detection of Duck Hepatitis B Virus, Duck Adenovirus Type 3, and Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus.

Duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV), Duck adenovirus 3 (DAdV-3) and Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (SGSP) are three distinct pathogens associated with infectious diseases in waterfowl. Clinical differentiation among these agents is often difficult due to overlapping signs, underscoring the need for accurate, rapid, and simultaneous diagnostic tools to support early detection and effective disease surveillance. In this study, we developed and validated a triplex TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for the simultaneous detection and quantification of DHBV, DAdV-3, and SGSP.

Streptococcus bovis group and biliary tract infections: an analysis of 51 cases.

Streptococcus bovis is a well-known cause of endocarditis, but its role in other infections has not been well described. We analysed prospectively all patients with biliary tract infections caused by S. bovis group during the period 1988-2011. We selected those cases associated with cholangitis and cholecystitis, defined according to Tokyo guidelines. Identification of the strains was performed using the API 20 Strep and the GP card of the Vitek 2 system, and was confirmed by molecular methods. Our series included 51 cases (30 cholangitis and 21 cholecystitis). The associated microorganisms we
