Psychological stress and semen quality impairment: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to evaluate the extent to which psychological stress may adversely affect seminal quality parameters in men. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted across databases including Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies were subjected to data extraction, risk of bias, and narrative synthesis. RESULTS: A total of 34 studies were included in this review. Three (8.82%) studies were judged to be at a high risk of bias. Included studies were published between 1988 and 2023 and concerned a total of 11,141 participants, ranging from 20 to 1,362 parti

Physiological and psychological stress reactivity in narcolepsy type 1.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a chronic sleep-wake disorder, characterized by a loss of hypocretin production. Unexpectedly, in postmortem tissue of people with NT1, there is a loss of corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the paraventricular nucleus. CRH is known as an activator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in response to stress. This activation results in the release of the stress hormones adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol. We hypothesize an altered physiological and psychological stress response in NT1. METHODS: Participants were people with N

Discrimination Exposure, Neural Reactivity to Stress, and Psychological Distress.

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination exposure has a detrimental impact on mental health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. The impact discrimination exposure has on mental health is likely mediated by neural processes associated with emotion expression and regulation. However, the specific neural processes that mediate the relationship between discrimination exposure and mental health remain to be determined. The present study investigated the relationship adolescent discrimination exposure has with stress-elicited brain activity and mental health symptoms in young adu

Understanding the Connection between Gut Homeostasis and Psychological Stress.

Long-term exposure to adverse life events that provoke acute or chronic psychological stress (hereinafter "stress") can negatively affect physical health and even increase susceptibility to psychological illnesses, such as anxiety and depression. As a part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) released from the hypothalamus is primarily responsible for the stress response. Typically, CRF disrupts the gastrointestinal system and leads to gut microbiota dysbiosis, thereby increasing risk of functional gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel s

Does Early Psychological Intervention Promote Recovery From Posttraumatic Stress?

In the wake of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, more than 9,000 counselors went to New York City to offer aid to rescue workers, families, and direct victims of the violence of September 11, 2001. These mental health professionals assumed that many New Yorkers were at high risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and they hoped that their interventions would mitigate psychological distress and prevent the emergence of this syndrome. Typically developing in response to horrific, life-threatening events, such as combat, rape, and earthquakes, PTSD is characterize

Perceived psychological stress and upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders.

This report presents data exploring the relationship between perceived psychological stress and several variables implicated in the etiology of upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTDs). The sample was 354 workers from three different manufacturing companies. The primary job exposure for the subjects was that they were engaged in jobs that involved repetitious movements of the upper extremities, primarily of the hands and arms. Data collection included a detailed health history, a comprehensive physical examination of the upper extremities, limited electrodiagnostic testing, Cohen's

Religiosity, spirituality, and cardiovascular responses to acute psychological stress.

OBJECTIVE: Religiosity and spirituality have both been associated with cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress; however, findings across studies have been inconsistent, and it remains unclear whether these associations are distinct from one another. This study examined the independent relationships of religiosity and spirituality with cardiovascular responses to stress. METHODS AND MEASURES: A sample of 221 healthy young adults who completed psychometric measures of religious identification and daily spiritual experiences, before undergoing a standardised stress-testing protoc

Fibromyalgia Animal Models Using Intermittent Cold and Psychological Stress.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and other frequent symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment, and mood disorder. Based on the view that intermittent stress would be the most probable etiology for FM, intermittent cold- and intermittent psychological stress-induced generalized pain (ICGP and IPGP) models in mice have been developed and validated as FM-like pain models in terms of the patho-physiological and pharmacotherapeutic features that are shared with clinical versions. Both models show long-lasting and

Central sympathetic network for thermoregulatory responses to psychological stress.

In mammals, many types of psychological stressors elicit a variety of sympathoexcitatory responses paralleling the classic fight-or-flight response to a threat to survival, including increased body temperature via brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and cutaneous vasoconstriction, and increased skeletal muscle blood flow via tachycardia and visceral vasoconstriction. Although these responses are usually supportive for stress coping, aberrant sympathetic responses to stress can lead to clinical issues in psychosomatic medicine. Sympathetic stress responses are mediated mostly by sympathetic prem

Linking Psychosocial Stress Events, Psychological Disorders and Childhood Obesity.

There is scientific evidence that supports a strong association between early exposure to stressful life events and the presence of health complications throughout adulthood and, to a lesser extent, in adolescence and childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the accumulation of Psychosocial Stress Events (PSE) and the prevalence of mental disorders in children from 8 to 12 years. The association between these factors and child weight measurements was analysed. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 children classified by weight status (obesity, overweight and normal-weight). Th

Acute psychological stress induces short-term variable immune response.

In spite of advances in understanding the cross-talk between the peripheral immune system and the brain, the molecular mechanisms underlying the rapid adaptation of the immune system to an acute psychological stressor remain largely unknown. Conventional approaches to classify molecular factors mediating these responses have targeted relatively few biological measurements or explored cross-sectional study designs, and therefore have restricted characterization of stress-immune interactions. This exploratory study analyzed transcriptional profiles and flow cytometric data of peripheral blood le

Psychological acute stress measurement using a wireless adhesive biosensor.

Stress management is essential in this modern civilization to maintain one's stress level low and reduce health risks, since stress is one of the primary causes leading to major chronic health disorders. The present study investigates the validity of stress index (SI) metric that objectively quantifies the psychological acute stress using a disposable adhesive biosensor worn on the chest called as HealthPatch(®). Eleven healthy volunteers (n=11) were attached with one HealthPatch sensor at left pectoralis major muscle along the cardiac axis to record modified Lead-II ECG. The subjects carried

Psychological abuse and posttraumatic stress symptoms in college students.

Research suggests that among college students, physical and sexual abuse in intimate relationships are associated with posttraumatic stress. Psychological abuse occurs in intimate relationships among college students, and though there is evidence that such abuse has a negative emotional impact, posttraumatic stress has not been extensively researched as an outcome in this population. The purpose of this study is to determine the associations of past-year psychological abuse with posttraumatic stress symptoms while controlling for other types of past-year relationship abuse and lifetime trauma

Aberrations in lymphocyte subpopulations and function during psychological stress.

Eight trainees in psychiatry taking their final oral fellowship examinations were compared with 16 controls to determine the effect of stress on their immune system. Two measures of stress were utilized to distinguish the highly stressed subjects from those minimally stressed. T cell subpopulations, B cell numbers, mitogen reactivity, natural killer cell activity, plaque forming cell responsiveness, antigen specific T suppressor cell activity, and hormone levels were studied 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the exam. The results demonstrated transiently elevated numbers of T and B lymphocytes

The Relationship Between Subjective Sleep, Biological Sex, and Cardiovascular and Psychological Reactivity to Acute Psychological Stress.

Poor sleep has been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Research indicates a bidirectional relationship between stress and disrupted sleep. It is possible individual differences in cardiovascular and psychological responses to acute stress may be a pathway connecting sleep and CVD. Research has also separately found biological sex may impact sleep and CVD outcomes. While studies examining subjective sleep and cardiovascular reactivity to acute stress show mixed results, few have concurrently assessed psychological stress responses or considered the moderating role of biological sex.
