Mortality of Western Burrowing Owls ( Athene cunicularia hypugaea) Associated with Brodifacoum Exposure.

Western Burrowing Owls ( Athene cunicularia hypugaea) frequently occupy periurban areas, where they may be exposed to pest control agents. This short communication describes necropsy findings and detected brodifacoum rodenticide levels for four Western Burrowing Owls in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, US, 2013-15. Levels detected ranged from 0.077 mg/kg to 0.497 mg/kg. Brodifacoum, one of several second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides recently removed from the general consumer market, is still available for use by licensed pesticide applicators. Despite recent regulatory actions, second-gener

Sensory evolution: A dazzling hack to cope with bright light in owls and whales.

When exposed to sudden changes in light intensity, rod-dominated retinas of animals with highly sensitive dim-vision risk critical damage. A new study finds that owls and deep-diving whales have evolved an identical photoprotection mechanism to delay toxic all-trans retinal release, a discovery with potential medical implications.

Blood Transfusion from a Magellanic Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus magellanicus) to a Barn Owl (Tyto alba): A Successful Case of Xenotransfusion.

This report describes successful transspecies blood transfusion from a Magellanic horned owl (Bubo virginianus magellanicus) to a barn owl (Tyto alba). The barn owl was admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center with severe anemia (packed cell volume [PCV] = 6.7%) from suspected anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning. Procedures performed included patient stabilization, pharmacological treatment, and persistent monitoring following the blood transfusion. The patient's PCV was measured daily, increasing progressively, and attaining a normal value for the species (PCV > 40%) on the eighth day pos

Anticoagulant Rodenticide Contamination of Terrestrial Birds of Prey from Western Canada: Patterns and Trends, 1988-2018.

As the dominant means for control of pest rodent populations globally, anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), particularly the second-generation compounds (SGARs), have widely contaminated nontarget organisms. We present data on hepatic residues of ARs in 741 raptorial birds found dead or brought into rehabilitation centers in British Columbia, Canada, over a 30-year period from 1988 to 2018. Exposure varied by species, by proximity to residential areas, and over time, with at least one SGAR residue detected in 74% of individuals and multiple residues in 50% of individuals. By comparison, we detect

Plague in Disguise: The Discovery of Occult Buboes on Surgical Procedure or Autopsy.

Introduction: Bubonic plague classically manifests as a painful, swollen superficial lymph node (bubo) that is readily apparent on physical examination. However, patients occasionally present with buboes formed in deep lymph nodes, which are difficult to detect and can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment. To better characterize this phenomenon, we conducted a review of the published literature to identify reports of occult buboes among patients with plague. Methods: Articles were identified from two sources: a systematic review on plague treatment, and a search of the PubMed Central data

Identification of two novel adenoviruses in smooth-billed ani and tropical screech owl.

Avian adenoviruses (AdVs) are a very diverse group of pathogens causing diseases in poultry and wild birds. Wild birds, endangered by habitat loss and habitat fragmentation in the tropical forests, are recognised to play a role in the transmission of various AdVs. In this study, two novel, hitherto unknown AdVs were described from faecal samples of smooth-billed ani and tropical screech owl. The former was classified into genus Aviadenovirus, the latter into genus Atadenovirus, and both viruses most probably represent new AdV species as well. These results show that there is very limited infor

Dental Microwear and Mesowear of the Microtus Voles Molars before and after Experimental Feeding of Owls.

In small mammals, the degree of micro- and mesowear of molars depends on the feed hardness, abrasiveness, and some other characteristics. Analysis of micro- and mesorelief of the paleontological material is used for reconstruction of some animal diet parameters. Small mammals pass through a series of complex transformations on the way from the objects of biocenosis to paleontological objects. Bone remains underwent transformations during accumulation and fossilization. In particular, bone remains from ornithogenous deposits were exposed to the bird digestive system elements. We have experiment

Productive thyroid follicular carcinoma in a wild barred owl (Strix varia).

An adult male barred owl (Strix varia) was found unable to fly on a pasture during the day. On presentation, several lacerations were noted on the left wing. The animal was anesthetized for radiographic examination, which revealed mild swelling and irregularity of the soft tissues of the left wing. Over the plane of the syrinx and great vessels, ill-defined soft tissue opacity was present. The anesthetic recovery was unsuccessful, and the patient died. On gross necropsy, a 1 cm in diameter, round, soft, red-tan nodule, with scattered light tan to white foci was noticed between the right subcla

Disseminated lymphoma of presumptive T-cell origin in a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus).

A geriatric male great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) that was a resident at a raptor center was presented for examination because of stridor and weight loss. Results of physical examination, diagnostic imaging, and biopsy were consistent with disseminated lymphoma involving the oropharynx, neck region (including thyroid and parathyroid glands), keel, spleen, and liver. Attempts to treat the owl with chlorambucil failed, and the owl was euthanatized 5 months later. Neoplastic cells from this owl were immunoreactive to CD-3 antibody, suggesting the lymphoma was of T-cell origin.

Congenital skeletal abnormalities in a tawny owl chick (Strix aluco).

In this case report, we describe a tawny owl chick (Strix aluco) coming from a Wild Fauna Recovery Center with multiple congenital malformations in the limbs. The animal was unable to fly and showed marked malnutrition and poor general appearance. Physical, radiologic, and anatomic examinations showed osseous malformations including dislocation of radius and carpometacarpus with abnormal nonfunctional fixation of ligamentum propatagialis, absence of most parts of the bones of the manus in both wings, and twisted nonfused left tarsometatarsus with marked griphosis of digits. Seasonal Variations in the Digestive Tract of the Little Owl, Athene noctua: Anatomical, Histological, and Scanning Electron Microscopical Studies.

The digestive tract of the little owl, Athene noctua (Strigiformes: Strigidae), is described in two different seasons. The digestive tract of this bird follows the basic model for that of a predatory bird. The cervical esophagus is not expanded to form a crop. The internal surface of the esophagus forms numerous longitudinal folds provided with numerous mucous glands. These longitudinal folds increase in number and vary in depth posteriorly. The folds of the proventriculus are composed of simple branched tubular glands. The ventriculus is lined by a thin layer of koilin. The number of goblet c

Pineal gland of a nocturnal bird, Indian spotted owlet, Athene brama: morphological and endocrine observations.

It has been reported that owls (Strigiformes) do not have a pineal gland. However, our light microscopy study revealed an intermediate form of tubulofollicular and solid-type large pineal gland in a tropical owlet, Athene brama. The epithelial cells forming follicles (6-8) in the distal region and the solid cluster of parenchymal cells of different diameters in the proximal region anteriorly tapered with a long cylindrical stalk and continued into commissural organs and choroid plexus. The intrapineal localization of perivascular nerve fibers and blood vessels clearly explained the sympathetic

A deep learning framework for bone fragment classification in owl pellets using YOLOv12.

Non-invasive monitoring of small mammal populations is critical for both biodiversity conservation and integrated pest management, particularly in agroecosystems. Barn owl (Tyto alba) pellet analysis has long served as a valuable tool for inferring prey abundance, yet conventional bone classification is labour-intensive and requires specialized expertise. Here, we introduce a deep learning framework that automates the detection and classification of rodent bone fragments from owl pellets using the YOLOv12 object detection architecture. A dataset comprising 978 annotated images, encompassing sk

Molecular Survey of Hemosporidian Parasites in Owls in Mainland Portugal.

Owls play an important role as avian hosts for hemosporidians, overlapping habitat use and activity with the arthropod vectors, which results in susceptibility to morbidity and, in some cases, mortality upon infection. This study aimed to analyze the hemosporidians in tissues collected from individual dead owls (n=240), in various regions of mainland Portugal, primarily obtained from wildlife rehabilitation centers (WRCs). Hemosporidian species were detected using nested PCRs, targeting the cytochrome b gene of the mitochondria. For species and lineage identification, 19 positive PCR samples w

Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae) infection in barn owls (Tyto alba) in Northeastern Brazil.

Platynosomum spp. are parasites that inhabit the gallbladder and bile ducts of various mammals and birds worldwide. Most studies of Platynosomum spp. in birds focus on the observation and morphological characterization of the parasite through parasitological or molecular examinations, with scarce literature describing anatomopathological alterations, mainly histopathological. We report the case of a male barn owl infected with Platynosomum spp.. At necropsy, the barn owl showed dilation with parasites and fibrosis of the intrahepatic bile ducts and gallbladder. Microscopically, it was possible

Structure and dynamics that specialize neurons for high-frequency coincidence detection in the barn owl nucleus laminaris.

A principal cue for sound source localization is the difference in arrival times of sounds at an animal's two ears (interaural time difference, ITD). Neurons that process ITDs are specialized to compare the timing of inputs with submillisecond precision. In the barn owl, ITD processing begins in the nucleus laminaris (NL) region of the auditory brain stem. Remarkably, NL neurons are sensitive to ITDs in high-frequency sounds (kilohertz-range). This contrasts with ITD-based sound localization in analogous regions in mammals where ITD sensitivity is typically restricted to lower-frequency sounds

Comparing the toepads of Australian diurnal and nocturnal raptors with nonpredatory taxa: Insights into functional morphology.

The ventral structures of the avian digits are the critical interface between a bird and the item within its grasp (e.g., prey, landing substrate, or object), and as such are vital for ensuring the hunting success and survival of predatory birds. Here, we present the first descriptive analysis of the ventral structures of the toes, toepad morphology, and toepad surface area of several diurnal (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) and nocturnal species (Strigiformes) of Australian raptors. We compare these with nonpredatory taxa (passeriform and psittaciform) to elucidate possible functional expl

Interspecific and geographical differences in anticoagulant rodenticide residues of predatory wildlife from the Mediterranean region of Spain.

We studied the prevalence of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in the liver of 344 individuals representing 11 species of predatory wildlife that were found dead in the Mediterranean region of Spain (Catalonia and Majorca Island). Six different ARs (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, flocoumafen, difethialone, warfarin) were found in the liver of 216 (62.8%) animals and >1 AR co-occurred in 119 individuals (34.6%). The occurrence of ARs was positively correlated with the human population density. Catalonia and Majorca showed similar prevalence of AR detection (64.4 and 60.4%, respectively),
