Assessing the Impact of Demographic Factors on Presenting Conditions or Complaints Among Internal Medicine Patients in an Underserved Population in Central Florida.

Background and objective Patients' demographics (race, age, gender, and ethnicity) have been determined to affect patients' health status. It has been established that chronic disease prevalence varies by race, age, gender, and ethnicity; however, not much is known about how these demographic factors influence presenting conditions or complaints within a student-run clinic (SRC). This study aimed to investigate how demographic factors in the Apopka community in Florida determine what internal medicine (IM) conditions or complaints patients present with at a student-run free clinic. Methods Ele

The benefits of undergraduate medical students delivering free preparticipation physical evaluations in collaboration with a K-12 school district.

BACKGROUND: Student-run free clinics are present at many medical schools throughout the United States. While many work with adult homeless or uninsured populations, few work with pediatric populations. We investigated the impact of volunteering at a free preparticipation sports physical clinic on medical students' educational motivation, school engagement, confidence in their clinical skills, connectedness to community, and self-efficacy. METHODS: First and second year undergraduate medical students who volunteered at a preparticipation sports physical clinic were eligible for the study. 30 s

Health Outcomes of Kansas City's Vulnerable Patients Following Shutdown: An Assessment of Blood Pressure Among Sojourner Health Clinic Patients.

Background In downtown Kansas City, patients who face homelessness or unstable housing situations may have been negatively affected by the shutdown of Sojourner Health Clinic (SOJO), a free student-run clinic that provides primary care predominantly to these patients. Research shows that blood pressure (BP) increases within weeks or months of interruption of antihypertensive therapy, especially in patients with advanced age and polypharmacy. Therefore, this study will examine how patients' blood pressure changed after the closure of Sojourner Health Clinic. Methods The study population consist

Evaluation of a Student-Led Community-Based Veterinary Clinic for Disabled Low-Income Clients: A Case Study of the University of Florida PAWS Program.

People with disabilities experiencing low socioeconomic position are priority populations when considering access to veterinary care. In this population, intersectional inequities lead to adverse health outcomes for both those individuals and the companion animals they care for. Community-based veterinary clinics provide an opportunity to target these inequities from a culturally sensitive lens, intending to improve human and animal outcomes. We conducted a process evaluation of a student-led community-based clinic for this population to better understand client satisfaction, assess learning o

Incorporation of Women's Health Maintenance Screening in the USD Coyote Clinic.

INTRODUCTION: The Coyote Clinic is a student-run clinic that provides free services to Sioux Falls residents without insurance. It has not historically provided routine women's health screenings. The project addressed this lack of preventative care. We aimed to increase the percentage of female patients that are up to date on Papanicolaou (Pap) smears, mammograms, and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines through the implementation of screening questions. METHODS: A screening questionnaire was created and asked to female patients between the ages of 18-65 about the dates and results of their la

Outcomes of a Student-Led Telemedicine Clinic in Response to COVID-19.

In response to the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we developed and launched a student-led telemedicine program in Chelsea. From April to November 2020, over 200 student volunteers contacted over 1000 patients to assess COVID-19 symptoms, provide counseling, and triage patients. Through a retrospective cohort study, we determined that student triage decision was associated with patient outcomes, including hospitalization status, COVID-19 test administration, and COVID-19 test result. These results quantify the outcomes of a student-led telemedicine clinic to combat the ongoing pa

A student operated, faculty mentored dental clinic service experience at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for the underserved refugee community: an interprofessional approach.

BACKGROUND: As the number of refugees settling in San Antonio increases, so will their health care needs. Due to limited resources and stress, they suffer from acute and chronic diseases, reducing their potential for success in their new host country. The need for proper health education coupled with a stable holistic health care facility is essential for their future success. OBJECTIVES: In 2009, nursing students began serving the San Antonio refugee population. By 2011, dental and medical students joined to create the student-run San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC). SARHC serves the r

Attitudes of Physical Therapy Students Toward the Population Currently Experiencing Homelessness: A Pilot Study.

UNLABELLED: Homelessness is a national epidemic and individuals experiencing homelessness have decreased access to healthcare services. At the same time, physical therapy (PT) educational programs are required to teach students about cultural competence, pro-bono service, and advocacy for underserved populations. Having PT students provide pro-bono services to this population in a supervised environment is a mutually beneficial scenario for the patients, students, and the PT program. AIMS: The study objective was to evaluate whether participating in a student-run free clinic (SRFC) at a homel

Exploring Barriers To Visual Screening for Canadian Immigrants in a General Primary Care Clinic: A Retrospective Chart Review.

Pre-school visual health screening (visual acuity, pupillary response, visual fields, and eye movements) is vital to detect visual disorders in children. Previous studies show the prevalence of significant eye diagnoses in children to be approximately 6.7%, highlighting the importance of early intervention to prevent permanent vision loss and support educational development. This retrospective chart review aimed to compare the completion rates of visual health screenings and iron level screenings in Canadian immigrant children (ages 2–6) in a general primary care clinic. By analyzing 113 Post

Ability of a Complexity Scoring System to Predict Veterinary Student Surgical Procedure and Clinic Duration.

The Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts student-run free clinics that offer surgical sterilization of male and female dogs and cats, with the goal of 20 surgical cases per clinic. Surgical complexity varies significantly between the surgical procedures for males (castration) and females (ovariohysterectomy) and is also influenced by weight and age for dogs. A surgical complexity scoring system was implemented to ensure the minimum number of patients while providing a diverse mix of cases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the surgical complexity scoring syst

Physical Activity, Mentorship, and Mental Health in Adolescents Living in Washington, DC: Teens Run DC.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is a serious concern among US adolescents. We examined the role of a combined running/mentorship program, Teens Run DC (TRDC), on self-reported indicators of mental health in high-school students (N = 291) living in Washington, DC. METHODS: The TRDC program was offered in 10 high schools across 7 DC wards between 2010 and 2018. We used a quasi-experimental design within each school to determine the relation between dose of the TRDC program, and indicators of depression, and social connectedness in students who did and did not participate in the program. Data were col

Clinical faculty development: using simulation to demonstrate and practice clinical teaching.

Students spend more time in clinical settings with smaller student-to-faculty learning ratios than in the didactic setting, yet many clinical faculty have had little exposure to evidence-based teaching strategies and learning theories. Orientation for newly employed clinical faculty, whether novices or experienced teachers, typically focuses on the details of running the clinical experience and not on teaching and learning. Multiple barriers for clinical faculty limit the ability to provide consistent and comprehensive education. The purpose of this article is to share the use of simulation as

Promotion of physical activity-related health competence in physical education: study protocol for the GEKOS cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: One central goal of physical education in many countries is to empower students to be physically active throughout their lifespan. Physical activity-related health competence (PAHCO) encompasses physical, cognitive, and motivational elements associated with the individuals' ability to be physically active in a health-enhancing way. To date, there is a lack of empirical evidence concerning effective programs and methods to promote PAHCO in physical education. The purpose of this study is to examine to what extent a health and physical fitness-related program that includes learning t

Building a strong foundation from the ground up: the impact of a medical student substance use disorder organization on curriculum and community.

Due to the increasing rates of substance use disorders (SUDs), accidental overdoses, and associated high mortality rates, there is an urgent need for well-trained physicians who can grasp these complex issues and help struggling patients. Preparing these physicians occurs through targeted education and clinical exposure in conjunction with medical school curricula in the field of addiction medicine. Medical students can often feel overwhelmed by the medical school curriculum and changes to the curriculum take time, money, and administrative commitment to ratify. Implementing a student organiza
