Systematic scoping review on HIV services for males in Sub-Saharan Africa: Access, barriers, and research gaps.

BACKGROUND: Access to HIV services among men and boys in Sub-Saharan Africa is a significant public health challenge, exacerbated by cultural norms surrounding masculinity. This scoping review systematically investigates disparities in the provision and utilisation of these services in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, employing a five-step process with any disputes resolved through discussion. A comprehensive search across various databases was conducted for studies published from January 2010 to October 2023. Methodological quality was asses

Human papillomavirus: Role of HPV2 and HPV9 in reducing the burden of cervical cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of death among women in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for nearly a quarter of global deaths from this disease. Its high incidence is due to the high prevalence of HIV, the persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and inadequate screening and treatment systems. Prophylactic HPV vaccines, notably Cervarix® (bivalent) and Gardasil 9® (nonavalent), have profoundly transformed primary prevention of cervical cancer. Cervarix® targets genotypes 16 and 18, which are responsible for 70% of cervical cancers, while Gardasil 9® offers broad coverage ag

Prevalence and determinants of HIV testing among adolescent girls and young women in 28 sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: HIV and AIDS remain a major global public health issue with the largest burden in sub-Saharan African (SSA) (SSA) countries. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in the sub-Saharan African region experience intersecting vulnerabilities that may increase their exposure to HIV, while also constraining their engagement with treatment and care. HIV testing is crucial in the AIDS response for both prevention and treatment, therefore, necessitating understanding of HIV testing practices, especially among priority populations. We examined HIV testing and associated factors among AGYW (

Why I Can't, Won't or Don't Test for HIV: Insights from Australian Migrants Born in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.

People born in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are overrepresented in HIV notifications in Australia. Just under half of all notifications among people from sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia are diagnosed late. Increased HIV testing among these communities is necessary to ensure early diagnosis, better care and reduce likelihood of HIV onward transmission. Recently, Australia has made new HIV testing methods available: rapid HIV testing and self-testing kits. We conducted 11 focus groups with 77 participants with people from sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia in fo

Disentangling the associations between women's decision-making power dynamics and maternal and child health outcomes in 35 sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has typically treated women's sole and joint decision-making as equivalent components of women's empowerment. This paper explores how different forms of women's decision-making power relate to maternal and child health (MCH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: We used the most recent data from Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 35 SSA countries (2012-2023), with outcome-specific samples ranging from 60,866 to 307,862 mother-child pairs. Women's decision-making power in healthcare, household purchases, and family visits was categorized as any decision by h

Rural-Urban Migration and Low-Transmission Endemicity of Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Statistical Inference Approach to Uncover Possible Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains one of the most pressing public health challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which continues to shoulder over 90% of the global burden of malaria cases and deaths. Despite major investments in control and treatment, the region faces persistent transmission heterogeneity, with pockets of low but sustained incidence that often fuel larger seasonal outbreaks. Each year, during the hot and dry season, multiple low-transmission hotspots-ranging from 3 to 150 cases per 10,000 person-weeks-emerge in many peri-urban and rural-urban fringe zones in western SSA. These hotsp

Integrated Framework for Assessing Multi-level Determinants of HIV Acquisition Affecting Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Sub-Saharan Africa: Assessing Risk and Protective Factors (INFORM-HERS).

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15 to 24 face disproportionate human immunodeficiency virus acquisition risk in sub-Saharan Africa, yet existing frameworks inadequately address their multilevel, gender-specific determinants. We developed INFORM-HERS (INtegrated Framework fOR assessing Multilevel determinants of human immunodeficiency virus acquisition among AGYW) using "Up and Down" theory integration of 3 established frameworks: Theory of Gender and Power, Modified Social Ecological Model, and Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health Framework of Social Determinants of Heal

"Sugar Daddy-Marandza" Dynamics and HIV Vulnerability: A Literature Review of Transactional and Intergenerational Sexual Relationships Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Sub-Saharan Africa, With a Focus on Mozambique.

Transactional and intergenerational sexual relationships, often termed "sugar daddy-marandza" dynamics, are a key driver of HIV among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This narrative review synthesizes evidence from 29 studies across the region, using the term "marandza"-originating in Mozambique-as an illustrative lens to examine a region-wide phenomenon. The review confirms these relationships consistently increase HIV vulnerability due to power imbalances, economic dependency, and patriarchal norms. Poverty, consumerism, and peer pressure propel AGYW into

Pharmacogenomic implications of the differential distribution of CYP3A5 metabolic phenotypes among Latin American populations.

This study shows that the distribution of CYP3A5 alleles (*1, *3, *6 and *7) and genotype-predicted CYP3A5 phenotypes vary significantly across Latin American cohorts (Brazilians and the One Thousand Genomes Admixed American superpopulation), as well as among subcohorts comprising individuals with the highest proportions of Native, European or sub-Saharan African ancestry. Differences in biogeographical ancestry across the study groups are the likely explanation for these results. The differential distribution of CYP3A5 phenotypes has major pharmacogenomic implications, affecting the proportio

Curriculum Development Around Parenting Strategies to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Program Collaboration Between Families Matter! and Global Dialogues.

Despite widespread recognition of child sexual abuse as a serious problem in sub-Saharan Africa, few far-reaching programmatic interventions addressing child sexual abuse in this setting are currently available, and those interventions that do exist tend to focus on response rather than prevention. The Families Matter! Program is an evidence-based intervention for parents and caregivers of 9- to 12-year-olds in sub-Saharan African countries which promotes positive parenting practices and effective parent-child communication about sex-related issues. This article describes the enhancement of a

Genetic Insights Into Hypertension and Breast Cancer Risk in African Women: A Mendelian Randomization and Colocalization Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is a major global health concern. Although observational studies have reported an association between hypertension and BC risk, the causal nature of this relationship remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a univariate two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal effect of genetically predicted hypertension on overall BC risk and its molecular subtypes. Summary-level genetic data for hypertension were obtained from the Africa Wits-INDEPTH Partnership for Genomic Research (AWI-Gen) study conducted in sub-Saharan Africa (n = 10,775).

Somatic and Stem Cell Bank to study the contribution of African ancestry to dementia: African iPSC Initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Africa, home to 1.4 billion people and the highest genetic diversity globally, harbors unique genetic variants crucial for understanding complex diseases like neurodegenerative disorders. However, African populations remain underrepresented in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) collections, limiting the exploration of population-specific disease mechanisms and therapeutic discoveries. METHODS: To address this gap, we established an open-access African Somatic and Stem Cell Bank. RESULTS: In this initial phase, we generated 10 rigorously characterized iPSC lines from fibroblas

Infection prevention and control in low- and middle-income countries: policy, practice, and implementation challenges in sub-Saharan Africa.

SUMMARYInfection prevention and control (IPC) programs are essential for safe healthcare; yet, implementation across sub-Saharan Africa remains constrained by chronic underfunding, weak water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems, limited laboratory capacity, and shortages of trained staff. Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are presumed common, underreported, and often severe, with a disproportionate burden among hospitalized neonates and postpartum women, and they pose substantial risks to healthcare workers during outbreaks. Gram-negative pathogens such as Klebsiella, Escherichia co

Human African trypanosomiasis control: Achievements and challenges.

Sleeping sickness, also known as human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), is a neglected disease that impacts 70 million people living in 1.55 million km2 in sub-Saharan Africa. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there have been multiple HAT epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa, with the most recent epidemic in the 1990s resulting in about half a million HAT cases reported between 1990 and 2015. Here we review the status of HAT disease at the current time and the toolbox available for its control. We also highlight future opportunities under development towards novel or improved interventions.

Self-harm with suicidal and non-suicidal intent in young people in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm, whether attributed to suicidal or non-suicidal motives, is associated with several poor outcomes in young people, including eventual suicide. Much of our understanding of self-harm in young people is based on literature from Europe (particularly, the UK), North America, and Australia. We aimed to synthesise the available evidence on prevalence, the commonly reported self-harm methods, correlates, risk and protective factors, and reasons for self-harm, in adolescents (aged 10-25 years) in sub-Saharan Africa. METHOD: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PubMed, African Journals

High Burden and Trend in Nonadherence to Blood Pressure-Lowering Medications: Meta-Analysis of Data From Over 34 000 Adults With Hypertension in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to blood pressure (BP)-lowering medication is a strong predictor of poor BP control. Sub-Saharan Africa has extremely low BP control rates (~10%), but it is unclear what the burden of medication nonadherence among Africans with hypertension is. This systematic review estimated the prevalence and determinants of nonadherence to BP-lowering medications in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS AND RESULTS: Multiple databases were searched from inception to December 6, 2023. Two reviewers performed independent screening, extraction, and quality assessment of studies. We pooled the

Anthropometric and cardio-metabolic trait variation and genetic associations in sub-Saharan Africa.

The genetics of complex traits in Africa has been historically understudied, which can contribute to healthcare inequalities. Here, we present observations of 27 anthropometric, cardiovascular, and blood biomarker measurements across 2,124 individuals from sub-Saharan Africa for whom we also have dense genotype data. First, we identified trait values that differ significantly across populations and subsistence lifestyles (e.g., hemoglobin levels and height). We then identified traits with high degrees of sexual dimorphism (e.g., weight and grip strength). ADMIXTURE analyses revealed substantia
