Communicatory routes connecting the middle ear, the inner ear and the subarachnoid space via perineural space.

Twenty-one rabbits received injection of Indian ink into the stylomastoid foramen. Observation of the serial sections of their temporal bones revealed Indian ink infiltration into the subarachnoid space, along the facial nerve, the auricular branch of the vagus nerve and the tympanic nerve. Along the acoustic nerve, the infiltration was found as far as the fundus of the internal auditory meatus. In some cases, however, Indian ink reached the subarachnoid space and infiltrated into the scala tympani, scala vestibuli and around the saccule by way of the cochlear aqueduct. These routes are suspec

Impact of age on the cerebrospinal fluid spaces: high-convexity and medial subarachnoid spaces decrease with age.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics may contribute to the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, and play a crucial role in brain health in older people; nonetheless, such age-related changes have not been well elucidated. Disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus (DESH) is a neuroimaging phenotype of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus, originating from impaired CSF dynamics, and closely associated with aging. This study aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of DESH and determine age-related changes in CSF dynamics. METHODS: Using magnet

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension with Disproportionately Enlarged Subarachnoid Space Hydrocephalus on Imaging.

The pathophysiology of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) differs in terms of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and imaging-related characteristics. A 51-year-old man presented with optic nerve papillary edema, visual disturbance, bilateral abducens nerve palsy, and a wide-based gait. Imaging showed characteristic findings of IIH and disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus (DESH) - characteristic of iNPH. A CSF examination revealed marked CSF hypertension. IIH with iNPH-like imaging features (DESH) was diagnosed,

Short-term subarachnoid space drainage: a potential treatment for extraventricular hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: Extraventricular hydrocephalus (EVOH), defined as the enlargement of all CSF compartments in the absence of an obstructing lesion, is usually associated with an increased head circumference and a relatively benign clinical course. Occasionally, because of concern about increased intracranial pressure (ICP), treatment with diuretics is initiated. In most cases, surgical drainage or diversion is not indicated. EVOH may follow a more alarming clinical course and be associated with developmental delay and/or other symptoms of increased ICP. CASE REPORT: We describe a 6-month-old gir

The subarachnoid space: normal fetal development as demonstrated by transvaginal ultrasound.

Enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces can be seen in the following conditions: communicating hydrocephalus, brain atrophy and benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces. These disorders may begin in utero. There are no established normograms for the fetal subarachnoid spaces. This study was conducted in order to determine its normal development. Transvaginal sonography was used to examine the subarachnoid space in 80 fetuses between 16 and 40 weeks' gestation. The sinocortical width (SCW) and craniocortical width (CCW) were measured in a coronal plane at the level of the foramen of Monro.

Macrocephaly in infancy: benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces and subdural collections.

OBJECTIVE Benign enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces (BESS) is a common finding on imaging studies indicated by macrocephaly in infancy. This finding has been associated with the presence of subdural fluid collections that are sometimes construed as suggestive of abusive head injury. The prevalence of BESS among infants with macrocephaly and the prevalence of subdural collections among infants with BESS are both poorly defined. The goal of this study was to determine the relative frequencies of BESS, hydrocephalus, and subdural collections in a large consecutive series of imaging studies pe

Measurement of shift of the cauda equina in the subarachnoid space by changing position.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To perform spinal anesthesia, patients are usually placed in the lateral decubitus position with the knees drawn up to the stomach, the legs fully flexed, and the neck flexed to curve the back outward. Because the nerve roots of the cauda equina have considerable mobility in the subarachnoid space, the position of the cauda equina in the lateral decubitus position may be different from that in the supine position. However, the anatomic position of the cauda equina in the lateral decubitus position with fully flexed legs has not been carefully studied. In the present

An improved procedure for catheterization of the thoracic spinal subarachnoid space in the rat.

Catheterization of the subarachnoid space provides a convenient means to deliver drugs to, or collect cerebrospinal fluid from, the spinal cord in animal experiments, and has been instrumental to our understanding of spinal mechanisms that underlie anesthesia, analgesia, or cardiovascular regulation. Experience gained over the years has revealed several shortcomings of this technique. We report a procedure that encompasses the benefits of direct subarachnoid catheterization of the rat thoracic spinal cord but circumvents the known shortcomings. An intrathecal catheter was fabricated with a sma

Subarachnoid space in infancy and early childhood: a systematic review of measurements.

BACKGROUND: Benign enlargement of the subarachnoid space (BESS) is a condition characterized by widened subarachnoid spaces, typically associated with macrocephaly or increasing head circumference during infancy or early childhood. Often described as idiopathic and self-limiting, BESS has also been associated with developmental delays and spontaneous subdural collections. Yet, complete interrogation of these associations is limited by lack of normative subarachnoid space characterization and standardized diagnostic criteria. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to review and synthesize literature on

Subarachnoid, subdural and interdural spaces at the clival region: an anatomical study.

AIM: We aimed to show the significance of the anterior pontine membrane as a determining structure between the subdural and subarachnoid space in the clival region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five adult cadaver heads and five cerebral hemispheres were used. The skull vault and hemipheres were removed by sectioning through the pontomesencephalic junction. Five other heads hemispheres were removed but the arachnoid membrane was protected and the cerebral side of the clival dura mater was dissected. In another specimen, the dural porus of the abducens nerve was sectioned for histological evaluation.

Follow-up study of macrocephalic children with enlargement of the subarachnoid space.

Eighteen macrocephalic children with enlargement of the subarachnoid space (ESAS), with or without mild ventricular dilatation, were followed prospectively to a mean age of 56 months. All were born at term, with uneventful neonatal period and negative tests for congenital infections. There were 17 boys and 1 girl and the mean follow-up period was 46 months (8-58 months). The initial neurologic evaluation, between ages of 2 to 33 months, disclosed abnormalities in 2 cases. At the follow-up one was still abnormal and the other had a normal neurological examination. Another child, who had a norma

Evaluation of disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is typically defined by the triad of gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence, and is characterized on MRI by disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space. Gait disturbance is also a commonly reported symptom in Parkinsonian disorders, especially progressive supranuclear palsy, although the frequency, clinical significance and mechanisms of hydrocephalus in these disorders are unclear. We aimed to assess the prevalence of hydrocephalic MRI parameters in a large cohort of Parkinsonian disorders and evaluate associations with clinical featu

Enlarged subarachnoid space on cranial ultrasound in preterm infants: Neurodevelopmental implication.

The role of enlarged subarachnoid space (ESS) in preterm infants has not been described in concrete. We aimed to evaluate whether ESS should be considered a risk factor potentially associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in prematurity. Electronic medical records of 197 preterm infants (median 32.1 weeks' gestation) including cranial ultrasound (cUS) images, head circumferences, and Korean Developmental Screening Tests for Infants and Children (K-DST) results at 18-24 months corrected age were reviewed. The clinical characteristics and K-DST results were compared in infants with an
