[Subjective parental stress as indicator for child abuse risk: the role of emotional regulation and attachment].

The Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI) is an evidence-based procedure for the assessment of the risk for child abuse in parents. In this study, a German translation of the CAPI was applied to a normal sample of German parents (N = 944). Descriptive analysis of the CAPI scores in the German provides findings comparable to the original standardization sample. The subjects' child abuse risk score was associated with demographic characteristics like education, marital status, occupation and gender. Long-term stability of the child abuse risk score and associations with individual differences i

Dynamic urethral pressure/profilometry pressure transmission ratio determinations in stress-incontinent and stress-continent subjects.

Bladder-to-urethra pressure transmission ratios were calculated in each quarter (designated Q1 through Q4) of the dynamic urethral pressure profile in 110 subjects. Thirty-seven subjects had genuine stress urinary incontinence, whereas 73 were stress continent. Subjects with genuine stress incontinence had significantly lower mean (+/- SD) pressure transmission ratios in all four urethral quarters compared with stress-continent subjects: 71% +/- 14% versus 94% +/- 38% for Q1 (p = 0.004), 69% +/- 16% versus 101% +/- 42% for Q2 (p = 0.00001), 79% +/- 19% versus 113% +/- 46% for Q3 (p = 0.0001),

The "1-3-5 cough test": comparing the severity of urodynamic stress incontinence with severity measures of subjective perception of stress urinary incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of the study was to examine whether a test performed during urodynamics, the "1-3-5 cough test", could determine the severity of urodynamic stress incontinence (USI). METHODS: We included women referred for urodynamics who were diagnosed with USI. The "1-3-5 cough test" was performed to grade the severity of USI at the completion of filling cystometry. A diagnosis of "severe", "moderate" or "mild" USI was given if urine leakage was observed after one, three or five consecutive coughs respectively. We examined the associations between grades of USI seve

Lévy statistics define anxiety and depression in mice subjected to chronic stress.

INTRODUCTION: Current rodent models for anxiety and depression assessment face methodological challenges compromising both scientific rigor and animal welfare. METHODS: This study introduced a novel approach using the Lévy flight (LF) statistical method to analyze spontaneous movement in open spaces. We employed three models: Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), Electric shock stress (ES), and Chronic Restraint Stress (CRS)-utilizing a total of 540 mice for LF fitting. A support vector machine algorithm was applied to distinguish each model group based on the two-dimensional distribution

Stress and oesophageal motility in normal subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Patterns of oesophageal motility were recorded in 17 healthy volunteers and 12 patients with the irritable bowel syndrome. Recordings were taken at rest and under stress by hyperventilation, a dichotic hearing challenge and a cold pressor test. In healthy volunteers the dichotic hearing challenge was associated with a significant increase in the mean amplitude of oesophageal peristalsis from 69.9 mmHg to 82.4 mmHg (p less than 0.01) and in the percentage of simultaneous waves from 9.7% to 24.5% (p less than 0.01). The cold pressor test increased the peristaltic amplitude from 69.9 mmHg to 87.1

Physiological reactions to stress in subjects with and without myofascial pain dysfunction symptoms.

Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction syndrome have been suggested as resulting from masticatory muscle hyperactivity. Furthermore, this hyperactivity has been viewed as a response-specific reaction to stress. The present study was designed to assess the effects of laboratory-induced stress (i.e., startle stimulus, buzzer series, serial sevens tasks, and pain threshold/tolerance tests) on physiological responses (i.e. bilateral masseter EMG, skin conductance level, and heart rate) of ten patients (TMJ pain) with a history of facial pain and TMJ soun

[Risk stratification of asymptomatic subjects using resting ECG and stress ECG].

The resting electrocardiogram (ECG) and stress ECG are established tests in the array of cardiovascular diagnostic modalities. In addition to their diagnostic value for structural heart disease and rhythm disorders, ECGs at rest or during stress also contain prognostically relevant information. Several ECG abnormalities, e.g., left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), Q waves, ST segment changes, left bundle branch block, atrial fibrillation or QT interval prolongation, were shown to be associated with cardiovascular events. Differences in study design, the cohorts of investigation and morphological

Psychological stress does not affect plasma catecholamines in subjects with cardiovascular disorder.

Whereas the effects of cardiac transplantation on the catecholamine response to physical exercise have been studied previously, the impact on psychological stress is unknown. Here, the arterial catecholamine response to the Stroop test of patients with an orthotopic heart transplant (OHT) was compared with that in subjects who had received a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or who were in heart failure and destined for a heart transplant (HF). Subjects were tested whilst sitting and their usual drug therapy was maintained. The Stroop test increased subjects' subjective tension but did not a

Replication of Langat virus in immunocompetent cells of mice subjected to immobilization stress.

Immobilization stress (hypokinesis) in Balb/c mice may aggravate asymptomatic infection with Langat virus (strain TP-21) as evidenced by 4-fold increased lethality in comparison with control animals. The virus levels in the spleen and brain of stressed and infected mice and the in vitro yield of the virus in immunocompetent cells derived from stressed mice were significantly higher than in controls. Enhanced virus replication in latter cells may contribute to increased accumulation of the infectious agent in lymphatic tissues, which would facilitate virus invasion into CNS followed with acute

Subjective sensory hypersensitivity in chronic acquired brain injury patients: the relationships with insomnia, hyperarousal and perceived stress.

Sensory hypersensitivity following acquired brain injury (ABI) is frequently reported and affects well-being, yet remains poorly understood. Research in neurotypical individuals suggests a link between hypersensitivity, insomnia, hyperarousal and perceived stress. This study examined the relationship between sensory sensitivity and insomnia in ABI patients and whether hyperarousal and/or perceived stress mediates this relationship. In an online cross-sectional cohort study among 188 chronic ABI patients of University Medical Centre Utrecht and 61 neurotypical controls, sensory hypersensitivity

Flight-associated cortisol dynamics and subjective assessments of pain and stress in fighter pilots: an exploratory study.

PURPOSE: Operating a high-performance fifth-generation fighter jet is a potential stressor in which hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dynamics may reflect the intensity of and adaptation to the stressor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate HPA axis activity in fighter pilots and explore whether indices of activity correlated with subjective indices of stress. METHODS: We studied HPA axis dynamics in 20 experienced fifth-generation fighter pilots (18 men/2 women) by measuring salivary cortisol at various times from bedtime the night before a flight training to awakening the morni

Concordance in salivary cortisol and subjective anxiety to the trier social stress test in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterised by an excessive fear of negative social evaluation. There is a limited understanding of how individuals with SAD react physiologically and subjectively to social stress. METHOD: The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), an acute social stress task, was completed by 40 SAD individuals (50% female) and 41 healthy controls (matched on age, sex, and education) to examine salivary cortisol and self-reported stress reactivity. Salivary cortisol concentrations and self-reported affect (anxiety, sadness, tiredness, withdrawal, and happiness) were

Cognitive Processing Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Is Associated with Negligible Change in Subjective and Objective Sleep.

Background: Patients receiving Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence based therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), report improved sleep quality. However, the majority of studies have examined residual sleep disturbance via self-report surveys or separate items on PTSD measures. This study examined whether CPT delivered to veterans in a VA setting improved sleep indices using state-of-the-art objective and subjective insomnia measures. Participants: Participants were war veterans with a current PTSD diagnosis scheduled to begin outpatient individual or group CPT at two Vete
