Pharmacological modulation of subliminal learning in Parkinson's and Tourette's syndromes.

Theories of instrumental learning aim to elucidate the mechanisms that integrate success and failure to improve future decisions. One computational solution consists of updating the value of choices in proportion to reward prediction errors, which are potentially encoded in dopamine signals. Accordingly, drugs that modulate dopamine transmission were shown to impact instrumental learning performance. However, whether these drugs act on conscious or subconscious learning processes remains unclear. To address this issue, we examined the effects of dopamine-related medications in a subliminal ins

A long-lasting improvement of tactile extinction after galvanic vestibular stimulation: two Sham-stimulation controlled case studies.

Sensory extinction is frequent and often persistent after brain damage. Previous studies have shown the transient influence of sensory stimulation on tactile extinction. In the present two case studies we investigated whether subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) modulates tactile extinction. GVS induces polarity-specific changes in cerebral excitability in the vestibular cortices and adjacent cortical areas in the temporo-parietal cortex via polarization of the vestibular nerves. Two patients (DL, CJ) with left-sided tactile extinction due to chronic (5 vs. 6 (1/2) years lesion age

Effects of ganglion blocking agents on post-train facilitation in the rabbit superior cervical ganglion.

The effect of ganglion blocking agents, hexamethonium and tubocurarine, on post-train facilitation and ganglionic transmission was studied and compared in isolated superior cervical ganglion of the rabbit, using electrophysiological technique--the conditioning-testing methodology. The preganglionic nerve trunk was stimulated, with either a single unconditioned stimulus (UR)-or a train of conditioning stimuli at 10 or 30 Hz, followed by a post-train test stimulus (PTR). The transmitted postganglionic, compound action potential (PCAP) was recorded following single and trains of stimuli, in the p

Spatiotemporal commonalities of fronto-parietal activation in attentional orienting triggered by supraliminal and subliminal gaze cues: An event-related potential study.

Eye gaze triggers attentional shifts with and without conscious awareness. It remains unclear whether the spatiotemporal patterns of electric neural activity are the same for conscious and unconscious attentional shifts. Thus, the present study recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) and evaluated the neural activation involved in attentional orienting induced by subliminal and supraliminal gaze cues. Nonpredictive gaze cues were presented in the central field of vision, and participants were asked to detect a subsequent peripheral target. The mean reaction time was shorter for congruent gaze

TMS stimulation over the inferior parietal cortex disrupts prospective sense of agency.

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of controlling an external event through one's own action. On one influential view, sense of agency is inferred after an action, by "retrospectively" comparing actual effects of actions against their intended effects. However, it has been recently shown that earlier processes, linked to action selection, may also contribute to sense of agency, in advance of the action itself, and independently of action effects. The inferior parietal cortex (IPC) may underpin this "prospective" contribution to agency, by monitoring signals relating to fluency of action sel

Vigilance for threat interacts with amygdala responses to subliminal threat cues in specific phobia.

BACKGROUND: The amygdala has been strongly implicated in the processing of threat-relevant information in specific phobia. However, there is an ongoing debate as to whether the amygdala may also be engaged outside of conscious stimulus awareness. Furthermore, considering that sustained vigilance for threat constitutes a crucial characteristic of specific phobias, we hypothesized a possible role of this symptom in modulating amygdala sensitivity to disorder-relevant cues. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined responses of the amygdala to subliminal and supralimi

When does subliminal affective image priming influence the ability of schizophrenic patients to perceive face emotions?

BACKGROUND: Deficits in face emotion perception are among the most pervasive aspects of schizophrenia impairments which strongly affects interpersonal communication and social skills. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Schizophrenic patients (PSZ) and healthy control subjects (HCS) performed 2 psychophysical tasks. One, the SAFFIMAP test, was designed to determine the impact of subliminally presented affective or neutral images on the accuracy of face-expression (angry or neutral) perception. In the second test, FEP, subjects saw pictures of face-expression and were asked to rate them as angry, happy, or

Passive or subliminal re-exposure is sufficient for fear modulation in eye-movement intervention.

Bilateral eye movement (EM) intervention-the core component of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy-has been implemented as a dual-task procedure that requires active retrieval and maintenance of traumatic memories during concurrent eye movements. However, it remains unclear whether explicit memory retrieval is essential for its therapeutic efficacy. To address this question, participants first acquired conditioned fear to snake/spider images and then received either passive (Experiment 1: N = 56) or subliminal (Experiment 2: N = 83) re-exposure to eccentrically present

How emotion context modulates unconscious goal activation during motor force exertion.

Priming participants with emotional or action-related concepts influences goal formation and motor force output during effort exertion tasks, even without awareness of priming information. However, little is known about neural processes underpinning how emotional cues interact with action (or inaction) goals to motivate (or demotivate) motor behaviour. In a novel functional neuroimaging paradigm, visible emotional images followed by subliminal action or inaction word primes were presented before participants performed a maximal force exertion. In neutral emotional contexts, maximum force was l

The carotid chemoreceptor input to the respiratory neurones of the nucleus of tractus solitarus.

1. An investigation has been made into the connexions between the carotid body chemoreceptors and the dorsal respiratory neurones of the cat's medulla.2. In confirmation of previous work these neurones were found to be all inspiratory in firing pattern and to fall into two categories, Ralpha (forty-four units) which fire only with the central inspiratory rhythm and Rbeta (thirty-two neurones) that are also excited by lung inflation. Both categories were shown to be excited by stimuli delivered to the carotid bodies during inspiration but, with a single exception, not during expiration.3. When

The H reflex recovery curve reinvestigated: low-intensity conditioning stimulation and nerve compression disclose differential effects of presumed group Ia fibres in man.

The recovery curve of the soleus H reflex, evoked by stimulation of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa, was studied by applying an electrical conditioning stimulus to the inferior soleus nerve. Under these conditions a long-latency facilitatory phase could be superimposed on a long-lasting inhibition, the excitability cycle being therefore similar to that obtained by means of a paired shock to the tibial nerve. In order to identify the afferent fibres responsible for the effects observed, various conditioning stimulus strengths and nerve compression were used. A low-intensity stimulus ind

Role of TLR4 polymorphisms in inflammatory responses: implications for unsuccessful aging.

The total burden of infection at various sites may affect the progression of atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the risk being modulated by host genotype. The role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor TLR4 is paradigmatic. It initiates the innate immune response against gram-negative bacteria, and TLR4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), such as +896A/G, known to attenuate receptor signaling, have been described. This SNP shows a significantly lower frequency in patients affected by myocardial infarction or AD. Thus, people genetically predisposed to developing lower inflammator

Less is more: the effects of very brief versus clearly visible exposure.

This study compared the effects of exposure to masked and unmasked phobic stimuli on phobic behavior. Participants were identified as spider-phobic with a questionnaire and a Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT) with a live tarantula (N = 101). One week later, they were administered one of three types of exposure: very brief (25 ms) or clearly visible (120 ms) images of spiders, or very brief images of flowers. They reported ratings of subjective distress just before and after these exposures, and engaged in the BAT again thereafter. Two weeks later, 57 participants returned for a follow-up BAT. Th

Need for cognition can magnify or attenuate priming effects in social judgment.

This article hypothesizes that the individual-difference variable, need for cognition (NFC), can have opposite implications for priming effects, depending on prime blatancy. Subtle primes are argued to be more effective for high- versus low-NFC individuals. This is because for high-NFC individuals, (a) constructs are generally easier to activate, (b) their higher amount of thought offers more opportunity for an activated construct to bias judgment, and (c) their thoughtfully formed judgments are more likely to affect behavior. However, because high-NFC individuals are adept at identifying and

Backward masking: evidence of reduced subcortical amygdala engagement in autism.

Recent data suggest that subthreshold presentation of emotional information is relayed to the amygdala along subcortical pathways. We examined the effect of backward masked neutral and anxious faces on the social decisions of a group of high functioning children with autism ages 7-13 years and matched controls. Participants were asked to select the friendliest of two faces, one of which was associated with the subthreshold (33 ms) presentation of an anxious face (A/N) and the other a subthreshold neutral face (N/N). Neutral paired faces were selected more often than A/N paired faces by both gr

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation enhances spatial memory in cognitive impairment-induced by intracerebroventricular-streptozotocin administration.

There are several anatomical connections between vestibular system and brain areas construct spatial memory. Since subliminal noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) has been demonstrated to enhance some types of memory, we speculated that application of noisy GVS may improve spatial memory in a rat model of intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (ICV-STZ)-induced cognitive impairment. Moreover, we attempted to determine the effect of repeated exposure to GVS on spatial memory performance. The spatial memory was assessed using Morris water maze test. The groups received 1 (ICV-STZ/GVS-I) o

Persistence of amygdala hyperactivity to subliminal negative emotion processing in the long-term course of depression.

Biased emotion processing has been suggested to underlie the etiology and maintenance of depression. Neuroimaging studies have shown mood-congruent alterations in amygdala activity in patients with acute depression, even during early, automatic stages of emotion processing. However, due to a lack of prospective studies over periods longer than 8 weeks, it is unclear whether these neurofunctional abnormalities represent a persistent correlate of depression even in remission. In this prospective case-control study, we aimed to examine brain functional correlates of automatic emotion processing i

Self-Face Activates the Dopamine Reward Pathway without Awareness.

The self-face advantage has been demonstrated not only at the supraliminal level, but also at the subliminal level. However, it remains unclear whether subliminal self-face processing involves the same neural networks as those for supraliminal self-face processing. Here, we show that the ventral tegmental area, a center of the dopamine reward pathway, exhibited greater activation to subliminal presentations of the self-face than those of the others' faces, whereas subliminal presentations of the others' faces induced activation in the amygdala, which generally responds to unfamiliar informatio
