Salivary gland carcinoma treated with concomitant chemoradiation with intraarterial cisplatin and docetaxel.

Malignant neoplasms of the salivary gland are uncommon entities in which surgical resection of the primary lesion has been accepted as a standard therapeutic option. The efficacy of radiation and systemic chemotherapy has been limited for patients with recurrent, metastatic, or unresectable disease because of unfavorable response rates and the short duration of the response. We treated one patient with recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma arising from the sublingual gland and one patient with primary adenocarcinoma arising from the parotid gland with transfemoral intraarterial chemotherapy, base

Mesenchymal Neoplasms of Salivary Glands: A Clinicopathologic Study of 68 Cases.

Salivary gland neoplasms are uncommon, and most exhibit epithelial differentiation. Mesenchymal neoplasms of the salivary gland are rare, and the incidence ranges from 1.9% to 5%. The aim of this study is to identify the types and clinical-pathological features of mesenchymal salivary neoplasm and review their differential diagnosis. A retrospective search for mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary glands from our institution's pathology archives from the 2004-2021 period and consultation files of one of the authors (AER) was performed. The clinical data were obtained from available medical records

[Epidemiology of non-malignant salivary gland tumours based on 675 cases].

Neoplasm of salivary glands constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. About 80% of all tumours of salivary glands is located in parotid gland, from 10 to 20% - in submandibular gland and several percent in sublingual and small salivary gland. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of non-malignant neoplasm in parotid and submandibular gland based

[Salivary gland tumors in the County of Funen, 1984-2003].

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study is to estimate the incidence of major salivary gland tumors in a geographically well-defined area (the County of Funen, Denmark) and to analyse the demographic data and distribution of histological types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with salivary gland tumors were identified through a search on pathology and diagnosis codes in the period 1984-2003, which initially resulted in a group of 951 patients. Of these a total of 682 patients (72%) fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. RESULTS: The incidence of major salivary gland tumors for the County of

Sublingual Gland Carcinoma Revealed by Choroidal Metastasis.

A 65-year-old man presented with a 1-week history of left eye distortion. An elevated choroidal lesion covering 6 disc diameters was found in the posterior retina of the left eye. Systemic examination revealed sublingual gland carcinoma and multiple lung metastases, and the diagnosis was choroidal metastasis from sublingual gland carcinoma. Following chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the choroidal lesion shrunk and the patient's visual acuity improved. The patient died 23 months after his first visit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of choroidal metastasis from

Imaging of salivary gland cancers derived from a sublingual gland herniated into the submandibular space: a report of three cases.

Sublingual gland herniation into the submandibular space through a mylohyoid muscle defect is a common anatomical variation; however, salivary gland cancers that arise from a herniated sublingual gland have not been described yet. Here, we report three patients with salivary gland cancers originating from a herniated sublingual gland. All tumors were detected as palpable submandibular masses, located anterior to the submandibular gland, medial to the mandible, and lateral to the mylohyoid muscle, with contact with the sublingual gland through a mylohyoid muscle defect. Intraoperative findings

Concurrent Perioperative Diagnosis of HIV in a Patient With Plunging Ranula: A Case Report.

Oral manifestations may be the earliest indicators of HIV infection as it has strong association with oral candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia, linear gingival erythema, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, Kaposi sarcoma, and lymphoma. Other conditions such as diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome, benign lymphoepithelial cyst, and salivary gland neoplasm have also been reported in HIV patients. Ranulas are caused by salivary leakage from the sublingual gland as a result of ductal obstruction or trauma. At the present time, there is no clear evidence of a

The diagnosis and surgical management of major salivary gland pathology.

BACKGROUND: Major salivary gland pathology is an uncommon but important finding which may initially present to general dental and medical practitioners. The consequences of misdiagnosis are important, as acute obstruction and neoplasia are the main pathological lesions diagnosed. The purpose of this study was to analyze a consecutive series of major gland pathologies treated surgically to determine diagnostic and treatment problems. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all cases of the major salivary glands treated on an inpatient surgical basis over a five-year period by the Oral and Maxillo

Treating tumors of the sublingual glands, including a useful technique for repair of the floor of the mouth after resection.

BACKGROUND: From a 55-year experience with about 4,000 patients treated for salivary gland tumors, we have identified 18 patients (0.5%) who received definitive treatment for neoplasms arising in the sublingual glands. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patient ages ranged from 35 to 76 years (median 59), and men and women were equally represented. All had malignant tumors, which included adenoid cystic carcinoma (9 patients), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (5 patients), and adenocarcinoma (4 patients). An asymptomatic swelling was the most common complaint (7 patients); the tumor was incidentally discovered by

Ultrasonography in the study of salivary gland lesions in children.

Salivary gland lesions are uncommon in children and may be related to the parotid, submandibular or sublingual glands. Inflammatory lesions are the most common cause of salivary gland abnormalities in children and can be due to acute viral, acute suppurative, or recurrent acute or chronic inflammation. Intraparotid lymphadenitis may also occur, as in cat-scratch disease or in other causes of cervical lymphadenitis. Salivary gland neoplasms are rare in children, and most of them are benign including mainly hemangioma, pleomorphic adenoma, or lymphangioma. Other lesions, such as sialolithiasis,

Schwannoma arising from the sublingual glandular branch of the lingual nerve radiologically masquerading as sublingual gland tumor.

We report a rare case of schwannoma arising from the sublingual glandular branch of the lingual nerve radiologically masquerading as sublingual gland tumor. A 42-year-old female was referred to our department with a painless swelling in the left submandibular region. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a well-circumscribed, heterogeneous low-density tumor with cystic change in the left sublingual region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-circumscribed, heterogeneous sublingual tumor with low-signal intensity on T1-weighted image and high-signal intensity in T2-weighted image. T

Adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland.

We described an extremely rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland of a 40-year-old Japanese woman. The tumor was growing from the cyst wall and almost occluded the cyst lumen. The epithelium lining the cyst lumen contained both keratin 19-positive cells and alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive cells, indicating the cyst being derived from the acinus/intercalated duct of the sublingual gland. Therefore, our case has presented for the first time a direct evidence that adenoid cystic carcinoma arises from acinus/intercalated duct.
