[A case of bilateral oncocytomas of the submandibular gland and synchronous renal oncocytomas].

A case of 42 years-old man with bilateral big sized (12 x 5 cm and 10 x 4,5 cm) oncocytoma in submandibular glands was presented. Oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm observed in numerous of organs. In the case described besides submandibular glands tumours, accessory oncocytic tumours in both kidneys were diagnosed. It was the reason of earlier unilateral nephrectomy. Surgical treatment was applied. The comparison of the both tumours histology allowed to establish proper diagnosis. The case is presented because of the explicitly of the oncocytoma location especially in the both submandibular

[Incidence of salivary gland malignancies in 12 year time period in ENT Department Medical University in Poznan].

Neoplasm of salivary gland constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of malignant neoplasm in parotid gland and submandibular gland based on the material collected at the ENT Department of the Medical University in Poznan in the years 1995-2006. In the 12-year period, 103 patients suffered from malignant neo

Salivary duct carcinoma in the submandibular gland: A rare case report with differential diagnosis.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignant salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for only 0.2% of salivary gland tumours. It predominantly affects the parotid gland and represents a significant concern with limited prevalence (1-1.2 individuals per million). We present a case of a 65-year-old female patient with a clinical history of swelling and pain in the right lower jaw region for six months. Diagnostic investigations revealed a well-defined submandibular gland lesion. Subsequent histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the lesion to be SDC. T

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the submandibular and parotid glands: a report of a case and review of the literature.

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (also known as Küttner tumor) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the salivary glands, first described by Küttner in 1896. Clinically, the disease cannot be distinguished from a true neoplasm. The submandibular gland is affected more commonly than any other salivary gland. This report is of a case of widespread swelling of the salivary glands in which histologic features of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis were seen in the submandibular and parotid glands. The etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis of this disease and the clinical outcome of this c

Oncocytic Sialolipoma of the Submandibular Gland: Case Report and Literature Review.

Sialolipoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor, most commonly arising in the parotid gland. Its oncocytic variant is exceedingly uncommon, particularly in the submandibular gland. We report a 58-year-old woman presenting with a painless, enlarging left submandibular mass. Imaging revealed a heterogeneous fat-containing lesion with calcifications and suspicious lymphadenopathy, and fine-needle aspiration suggested a salivary gland neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential. The patient underwent submandibular gland excision with selective neck dissection. Histopathological examination confirm

Pitfalls in the staging of cancer of the major salivary gland neoplasms.

The major salivary glands consist of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Most neoplasms in other subsites in the head and neck are squamous cell carcinoma, but tumors of the salivary glands may be benign or malignant. Surgical treatment differs if the lesion is benign, and therefore preoperative fine needle aspiration is important in salivary neoplasms. The role of imaging is to attempt to determine histology, predict likelihood of a lesion being malignant, and report an imaging stage. This article reviews the various histologies, imaging features, and staging of major salivary

Surgical complications of submandibular gland excision.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Submandibular gland excision is the treatment of choice in chronic pathology resistant to medical treatments or in oncological cases. The aim of this study was to analyse its current postoperative complications. MATERIAL & METHODS: Retrospective study on submandibular gland excisions performed at our University Hospital between 2004 and 2010. RESULTS: A total of 29 submandibular gland excisions were performed: 44.8% (13) for chronic sialadenitis, 37.9% (11) for salivary gland neoplasm and 17.2% (5) for adjacent tumours. Median length of hospital stay was 2 days.

Breast carcinoma metastasis to the submandibular gland: Clinical, sonographic and pathological findings of a rare entity.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic disease to the submandibular gland is a rare phenomenon with limited information available on related imaging findings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 59-year-old female who presented with a palpable nodule in the right submandibular gland 6 years after treatment for breast carcinoma. Ultrasound findings were concerning for distant metastatic disease from breast cancer recurrence. The histopathological analysis of the biopsied tissue confirmed infiltration of the right submandibular gland with an adenocarcinoma from a breast primary. DISCUSSION: Metastatic spread to

Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma With Late Metastasis to the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the head and neck region is rare, accounting for approximately 8%-14% of all RCC metastases. The thyroid gland is the most common site of metastasis in this region. However, RCC is known for its ability to metastasize to unusual anatomical sites, including the salivary glands. Approximately 0.1% of metastatic salivary gland neoplasms originate from renal malignancies, and the parotid gland is the most frequently involved site. Metastases to the submandibular and sublingual glands are considerably less common. In this report, we present a 62-year-old

Plasmacytoma of the parotid gland. Report of a case and review of the world literature.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EP) is a relatively rare neoplasm; about 90% of cases are localized in the head and neck area. EP has been considered a precursor of multiple myeloma but cases showing long disease free intervals or cure by surgery alone have been reported. A research of the world literature pointed out the extremely rare localization of solitary plasmacytoma in the salivary glands. Only 9 cases have been reported until now, 6 in the parotid gland, 2 in the submandibular glands and 1 in both the parotid and submandibular gland.

Solitary Fibrous Tumors of the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon neoplasms that arise from the pleura. Although they can appear in various extrathoracic areas, they are uncommon in the submandibular gland. This paper reports a 37-year-old woman with a spherical, hypoechogenic mass measuring 13 × 37 mm and having a regular boundary on the left side of the submandibular gland. The lesion was surgically excised with a less than 1 mm margin. Following histopathological and immunohistochemical examination, the diagnosis of SFT was confirmed. Staining showed that the lesion was negative for vimentin, AE3/CKAE1, calponin

Submandibular gland cystadenocarcinoma with mucinous adenocarcinoma-like areas: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Cystadenocarcinoma is primarily characterized by cystic structures of varying sizes, that are lined by epithelial cells. As a rare neoplasm, only four cases of cystadenocarcinoma of submandibular glands have been previously reported. Herein, we reported a unique case of submandibular gland cystadenocarcinoma in a 44-year-old man. By in large, this case had typical morphologic cystadenocarcinoma features. However, mucinous adenocarcinoma-like areas were additionally observed in the tumor tissues. This case was initially misdiagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma due to the low incidenc

Margins for Benign Salivary Gland Neoplasms of the Head and Neck.

The proper ablation of any neoplasm of the head and neck requires the inclusion of linear and anatomic barrier margins surrounding the neoplasm. Extirpative surgery of the major and minor salivary glands is certainly no exception to this surgical principle. To this end, the selection and execution of the most appropriate ablative surgical procedure for a major or minor benign salivary gland neoplasm is an essential exercise in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Of equal importance is the intraoperative identification and preservation of the pseudocapsule surrounding the benign neoplasm. This arti

Postauricular incision versus conventional transcervical incision in submandibular gland excision: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Surgical removal of the submandibular gland is indicated for different conditions affecting the gland, such as neoplasm, sialadenitis, and sialolithiasis, and different types of surgical approaches have been reported. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the differences between the postauricular approach and conventional transcervical approach in submandibular gland excision. A systematic review was performed using PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library to identify studies comparing outcomes of submandibular gland surgery via the postauricular approach and conventional transcervi

Sebaceous adenoma of the submandibular gland: a case report.

Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is a rare tumor comprising 0.1% of all salivary gland neoplasms and less than 0.5% of salivary adenomas. Histologically, sebaceous adenomas are benign neoplasms consisting of sebaceous cells arranged in nests forming acinar and duct-like structures. Oncocytic metaplasia may also occur in some areas. We describe a case of sebaceous adenoma in the submandibular gland. Under a presumptive diagnosis of sialadenitis/sialolithiasis, the patient was administered multiple courses of antibiotics; however, these were not effective. Excisional biopsy resulted in a

Cutaneous Metastases from Salivary Duct Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland.

Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive malignant neoplasm that frequently metastasises to other organs, but cutaneous metastasis is uncommon. There are only 6 cases reported in the literature with metastases to the skin and in all cases the tumour originates from the parotid gland. We present a case of skin metastases from the submandibular gland that was mistaken for basal cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of salivary duct carcinoma arising from the submandibular gland with cutaneous metastases.

Cavernous Haemangioma of the Submandibular Triangle Eluding the Gland - A Case Report.

RATIONALE: Haemangiomas are benign vascular malformations. They are common neoplasms of infancy but seldom manifest at birth. Although common in the head & neck region, they are rare in the submandibular region. Despite being benign, surgical treatment is necessary if it causes significant functional or aesthetic compromise. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient's primary complaint was swelling in the submandibular region. DIAGNOSIS: Initial examination and imaging studies were suggestive of sialolithiasis due to the presence of multiple calcifications. Ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imagin

Oncocytic variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of submandibular gland: an unusual clinical and morphological entity.

In this case report we describe a rare tumor--Oncocytic variant of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland with a review of the literature. Oncocytic metaplasia in salivary glands is a benign change that is associated with increasing age and also seen in a few salivary gland neoplasms', which include oncocytoma, Warthin's tumor, and the rare, oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytic differentiation in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is uncommon. Only twelve well-documented cases of oncocytic MEC have been reported previously all of which occurred in the parotid gland. Oncocytic lipoadenoma of the submandibular gland.

We report a case of oncocytic lipoadenoma of the submandibular gland, previously unrecognized benign tumor of the salivary gland. The patient was a 66-year-old Japanese woman with a left submandibular mass, measuring 11 x 7.5 x 5 cm. Microscopically, the mass was completely surrounded by a thin fibrous connective tissue capsule, and was composed of an intimate admixture of mature fat cells and oncocytes. There have been no English reports of such a neoplasm in the salivary gland with the exception of one recent case report of lipoadenoma of the parotid gland without oncocytic features. We prop
