Oral health-related quality of life among an Australian sample of people who inject drugs.

OBJECTIVES: People who inject drugs (PWID) have poor oral health. However, their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is unknown. Our study was designed to measure the OHRQoL of PWID. METHODS: The Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) was administered to 794 PWID recruited in Australian capital cities as part of the 2013 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS). Three OHIP-14 summary indicators were examined: "Prevalence" (proportion reporting ≥1 item at least "fairly often"), "severity" (mean total OHIP-14 score), and "extent" (number of impacts reported at least "fairly often"). Assoc

Dental care and oral disease in alcohol-dependent persons.

Dental/Oral health of alcohol-dependent persons and substance abusers is often neglected. It is not clear that alcohol dependence has effects on oral health beyond those expected in nonalcoholic persons of similar socioeconomic status (SES). Study objectives were to examine the personal dental care habits, ability to access professional dental care, and the types of services received and to examine their effect on the oral health of alcohol-dependent persons and substance abusers. Forty Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition Revised-diagnosed alcohol-dependent per

Risks of human immunodeficiency virus infection among adolescents attending three diverse clinics.

This study was performed to identify specific high-risk behaviors, such as unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse and substance abuse, associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection among adolescents attending three diverse clinics located in a localized geographic area: a university-based clinic, a Planned Parenthood clinic, and an inner-city public health clinic (PHC). Six hundred seventy-one female and 207 male adolescents attending one of the three clinics completed a structured questionnaire. Similarities among patients at the clinic sites included high rates of anal inte

The effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids administration on oral health in humans: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review aimed to evaluate the effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) administration on oral health in humans, distinguishing between medical indications (e.g., replacement therapy) and abuse, while mapping their impact on oral conditions and identifying gaps in knowledge. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Virtual Health Library databases. Search terms included keywords related to AAS, testosterone and specific oral health conditions such as dental caries, tooth loss/edentulism, periodontal disease, oral trauma, and or

The areca (betel) nut: clinical implications for dental practice in the United States.

Areca nut (AN), commonly known as betel nut, has been used for centuries in ceremonies and rituals, consumed for unproven therapeutic effects, and abused as a recreational psychostimulant. AN is the fourth-most commonly abused psychoactive substance globally-only behind caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol-and its consumption is strongly associated with the development of adverse oral effects, most notably potentially malignant oral disorders (eg, oral leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis) and oral malignancies. Examples of other areca-related oral adverse reactions include profound dark brownis

The California registration system for habitues to schedule II drugs.

In order to help control abuse and prevent over-prescribing, California has developed triplicate prescriptions for Schedule II narcotics as well as a system for physicians to publicly register patients who are habitues to Schedule II Controlled Substances. A preliminary evaluation indicates that there is under-reporting and confusion among physicians about the system, but it has probably helped control Schedule II narcotic abuse in California while not depriving patients of needed treatment. Physicians appear to prescribe Schedule II narcotics for serious medical conditions but may underprescr

Prevalence of adult sexual abuse in men with mental illness: Bayesian meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sexual abuse is a broad category of traumatic experiences that includes rape and any unwanted sexual contact with a body part or foreign object, whether penetrative, oral or otherwise. Although patients with mental illness have a higher risk of becoming victims of sexual abuse in adulthood, few studies investigate the proportion of male victims in this population. Their underrepresentation in research is a barrier to understanding the negative outcomes associated with sexual abuse in men. AIMS: We estimated the prevalence of recent (past year) and adulthood sexual abuse perpetrate

Subtypes of nonmedical prescription drug misuse.

This study used three characteristics (i.e., motive, route of administration, and co-ingestion with alcohol) of nonmedical prescription drug misuse across four separate classes (i.e., pain, sedative/anxiety, sleeping, and stimulant medications) to examine subtypes and drug related problems. A Web survey was self-administered by a randomly selected sample of 3639 undergraduate students attending a large midwestern 4-year U.S. university. Self-treatment subtypes were characterized by motives consistent with the prescription drug's pharmaceutical main indication, oral only routes of administratio

Relationship between ethanol and sucrose self-administration and schedule-induced polydipsia.

Studies have suggested a relationship between drug abuse and compulsive behaviors. The present experiments investigated the relationship between schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) and self-administration (SA) of ethanol and sucrose. SIP served as a model of compulsive behavior, and oral self-administration on a progressive-ratio (PR) schedule of reinforcement assessed the reinforcing value of either a 10% ethanol solution or an isocaloric sucrose solution. Rats first were exposed to PR sessions in which break points were the dependent variable and then switched to SIP sessions, with number of l

Pharmacokinetic Characterization of 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol in Urine Following Acute Oral Cannabis Ingestion in Healthy Adults.

Understanding the urine excretion profile for Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) metabolites is important for accurate detection and interpretation of toxicological testing for cannabis use. Prior literature has primarily evaluated the urinary pharmacokinetics of the non-psychoactive THC metabolite 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THCCOOH) following smoked cannabis administration. The present study examined the urine THCCOOH excretion profile following oral cannabis administration in 18 healthy adults. Following ingestion of a cannabis-containing brownie with 10, 25 or 50 mg of THC (N = 6

Aspiration in lethal drug abuse-a consequence of opioid intoxication.

AIMS: The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether the fatalities of opioid abuse are not only related to respiratory depression but also as a result of other side effects such as emesis, delayed gastric emptying, a reduction of the cough reflex, and impaired consciousness leading to the aspiration of gastric contents, a finding regularly observed in drug-related deaths. DESIGN: A retrospective exploratory study analyzing heroin/morphine/methadone-related deaths submitted to court-ordered autopsy. SETTING: Center for Forensic Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, Austria

Plasma and oral fluid pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics after oral codeine administration.

BACKGROUND: The ease, noninvasiveness, and safety of oral fluid collection have increased the use of this alternative matrix for drugs-of-abuse testing; however, few controlled drug administration data are available to aid in the interpretation of oral fluid results. METHODS: Single oral codeine doses (60 and 120 mg/70 kg) were administered to 19 volunteers. Oral fluid and plasma were analyzed for free codeine, norcodeine, morphine, and normorphine by solid-phase extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE/GC-MS). Physiologic and subjective effects were examined. RESUL

Methylphenidate abuse and misuse in patients affected with a psychiatric disorder and a substance use disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Methylphenidate (MPH), a central nervous system stimulant primarily prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), has seen increasing rates of misuse and abuse, particularly in patients with dual diagnosis (co-occurring psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders/SUDs). The heightened risk of dependence and adverse effects in these vulnerable populations warrants a systematic review to assess the prevalence and pattern of abuse/misuse of MPH among patients within this population and to understand potential risk factors, patterns of misuse, and outcomes, incl
