Error-related brain activity as a transdiagnostic endophenotype for obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Increased neural error-signals have been observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and inconsistently in depression. Reduced neural error-signals have been observed in substance use disorders (SUD). Thus, alterations in error-monitoring are proposed as a transdiagnostic endophenotype. To strengthen this notion, data from unaffected individuals with a family history for the respective disorders are needed. METHODS: The error-related negativity (ERN) as a neural indicator of error-monitoring was measured during a flanker task from 117 OCD patients, 50 unaff

Self-reported psychotic disorders among Individuals with substance use disorders: findings from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Comorbidity of substance use disorders (SUDs) and psychotic disorders (PDs) presents many challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Most reports to-date focus on the prevalence of SUDs among clinical populations of patients with PDs, and there is a lack of data pertaining to rates of PDs among individuals with substance use and SUDs. METHODS: We analyzed data on 43,093 respondents age 18 and above from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally representative US survey (Wave 1, 2001-2002). Cross-tabulations were used to derive pre

Analyses related to the development of DSM-5 criteria for substance use related disorders: 3. An assessment of Pathological Gambling criteria.

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 Substance-Related Disorders Work Group proposed to include Pathological Gambling within the current Substance-Related Disorders section. The objective of the current report was to assess four possible sets of diagnostic criteria for Pathological Gambling. METHODS: Gamblers (N=161) were defined as either Pathological or Non-Pathological according to four classification methods. (a) Option 1: the current DSM-IV criteria for Pathological Gambling; (b) Option 2: dropping the "Illegal Acts" criterion, while keeping the threshold at 5 required criteria endorsed; (c) Option 3:

Clinical study of the relation of borderline personality disorder to Briquet's syndrome (hysteria), somatization disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The criteria for borderline personality disorder seem to select patients with very high rates of Briquet's syndrome (hysteria), somatization disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse disorders. This study was undertaken to determine whether systematic assessment of patients with borderline personality disorder would reveal characteristic features of that condition which would distinguish it from these other disorders. METHOD: Eighty-seven white female patients (75 in St. Louis and 12 in Milan, Italy) who had borderline personality disorder according to both the

Care Trajectories Among Patients With Substance-Related Disorders in the 3 Years Before Their Last Suicide Attempt.

OBJECTIVES: Among patients with substance-related disorders (SRDs) and suicide attempts in 2014-2021, we identified care trajectories within a 3-year period preceding their last suicide attempt (index date). We also determined associations between care trajectories and patients sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, quality of care received, and risk of death in the following year. METHODS: Using Quebec (Canada) medical databases, we produced Group-based Multi-Trajectory Modeling, Multinomial Logistic Regression, and Cox Proportional Hazards models. RESULTS: We identified five care t

Tobacco Use Disorder Among Patients With Smoking-related Chronic Medical Disease: Association With Comorbid Substance Use Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Very little is known of the behavioral vulnerabilities of patients diagnosed with smoking-related chronic medical illness who continue to smoke, potentially worsening morbidity and mortality risks. This study explores the association of tobacco use disorder (TUD) among those with smoking-related chronic medical illnesses with other substance use disorders (SUDs) and risk factors. METHODS: Among veterans with smoking-related chronic medical illnesses identified from the National Veterans Health Administration administrative records from fiscal year 2012, we compared the character

Dopaminergic dysfunction in substance-related and behavioral addictions: Evidence from SPECT imaging in alcohol and gambling disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Dopamine plays a central role in mediating addictive disorders (ADs), encompassing both substance-related and behavioral conditions. Some neurobiological alterations reflect trait-like vulnerability, while others are state-dependent, arising from intoxication and withdrawal. In this study, we examined striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) availability in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and gambling disorders (GD) to disentangle core mechanisms underlying addiction. METHODS: The study involved individuals with AUD (n = 14), GD (n = 14), and healthy controls (HC; n = 25).

Virtual Reality in Prevention and Treatment of Substance-Related Disorders: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse (SA) imposes a significant global health burden, demanding innovative and accessible interventions. Virtual reality (VR) offers a promising approach, providing engaging and personalized treatment experiences. However, rigorous evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on VR's efficacy in the treatment and prevention of SA remains limited. This systematic review aimed to characterize VR interventions for substance-related disorders and evaluate their effectiveness. METHODS: To conduct this review, two researchers independently performed a comprehensive liter

Reported Non-Substance-Related Mental Health Disorders Among Persons Who Died of Drug Overdose - United States, 2022.

Drug overdose deaths remain a public health crisis in the United States; nearly 107,000 and nearly 108,000 deaths occurred in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Persons with mental health conditions are at increased risk for overdose. In addition, substance use disorders and non-substance-related mental health disorders (MHDs) frequently co-occur. Using data from CDC's State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, this report describes characteristics of persons in 43 states and the District of Columbia who died of unintentional or undetermined intent drug overdose and had any MHD. In 2022, 21

Lipid-Lowering Therapy in HIV-Infected Patients: Relationship with Antiretroviral Agents and Impact of Substance-Related Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has significantly decreased the morbidity and mortality associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Lipid disorders, including lipodystrophy, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypercholesterolemia, remain the most commonly reported metabolic disorders among those treated with long-term cART. Mounting evidence suggests an association between drug abuse and poor glycemic control and diabetes complications. Substance related disorders (SRD) may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. Event-related potentials in substance use disorders: a narrative review based on articles from 1984 to 2012.

Mechanisms that mediate the transition from occasional, controlled, drug use to the impaired control that characterizes severe dependence are still a matter of investigation. The etiology of substance use disorders (SUDs) is complex, and in this context of complexity, the concept of "endophenotype," has gained extensive popularity in recent years. The main aim of endophenotypes is to provide a simpler, more proximal target to discover the biological underpinnings of a psychiatric syndrome. In this view, neurocognitive and neurophysiological impairments that suggest functional impairments assoc

Recent important substance-related losses predict readiness to change scores among people with co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

The transtheoretical model posits that contemplating change in substance abuse involves weighing the costs of substance use against the benefits. One of the common aversive consequences of substance misuse is personal loss. Indeed, higher total number of losses of unspecified recency and importance have predicted greater motivation to change substance use patterns. A sample of 110 participants with co-occurring Axis I psychiatric and substance use disorders completed a questionnaire measuring recent important substance-related losses (LOSS-QR) and the Brief Readiness to Change questionnaire (R

Substance Use Disorder in Adult-Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Patients: Patterns of Use and Related Clinical Features.

BACKGROUND: While a large amount of medical literature has explored the association between Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), less attention has been dedicated to the typologies of SUD and their relationships with ADHD-specific symptomatology and general psychopathology in dual disorder patients. METHODS: We selected 72 patients (aged 18-65) with a concomitant SUD out of 120 adults with ADHD (A-ADHD). Assessment instruments included the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in adults (DIVA 2.0), Conner's Adult ADHD Rating Scales-Observer (CAARS-O:S):

A scoping review of spirituality in relation to substance use disorders: Psychological, biological, and cultural issues.

BACKGROUND: Spirituality is a construct encompassing a diversity of strongly held beliefs and pursuits related to life's meaning and purpose. Empirical studies in key domains of spirituality related to substance use disorder (SUD) can be valuable in guiding research, and potentially clinical care. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a scoping review of research on the psychological, biological, and cultural dimensions of spirituality and their role in relation to SUD. To identify limitations in empirical findings within these domains and identify promising areas for related research. DATA SOURCES, STUDY

Provision of health care services related to substance use disorder in southern U.S. jails.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. jail population has more than tripled since the 1980s, and today, one out of every three incarcerated individuals is being held in a county or city jail. Substance use disorders (SUD) are overrepresented in incarcerated populations; however, little recent research has examined the availability and quality of SUD-related health care services in jail settings. Incarcerated individuals may engage with a variety of SUD-related health care services, including: screening and withdrawal management at entry, SUD treatment or other brief health care interventions while they are b

Developmental timing of child maltreatment in relation to obesity and substance use disorder in late adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and substance use are leading preventable causes of mortality, yet their origins in violence remain poorly understood. This study examined child maltreatment in relation to obesity and symptoms consistent with substance use disorder (SUD) in late adolescence, determining the roles of the child maltreatment type and timing, and gender. METHODS: The sample (N = 1,161) was drawn from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect. Obesity and SUD were measured at 18-years. Lifetime child protective services records and youth self-reports indicated physical abuse, sexual a

Trends in Substance Use Disorder-related Admissions at a Safety-net Hospital, 2008 - 2020.

OBJECTIVES: Safety-net hospitals disproportionately care for people with substance use disorders (SUDs), yet little is known about trends in hospital admissions related to specific substances. This study uses electronic health record data to describe trends in substance-specific admissions at a Midwest urban safety-net hospital. METHODS: We included all admissions from 2008 through 2020 and defined them as non-SUD (N = 154,477) or SUD-related (N = 63,667). We described patient characteristics and trends in substance-specific admissions. We estimated the association of SUD diagnoses with disch

Substance-related intrusive memories in cocaine use disorder are different from but associated with craving.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a significant global health concern, characterized by persistent craving despite severe consequences. Recent theories highlight maladaptive memory processes - such as intrusive, vivid recollections of past substance use that arise spontaneously in daily life - as key contributors to craving and relapse; however, empirical studies examining such substance-related intrusions in naturalistic contexts remain scarce. This study therefore used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the frequency, phenomenology and emotional and behavio
